Sorry this is kind of late, I forgot I had to go drop my brother off at camp… but I’m here now! XD
Yeah, I know what you mean. It’s fiction, but at the same time, you don’t want to ruin a good thing, as in God’s creation. It’s part of the reason I work with my own worlds, but I may not always do that.
Obviously, our world isn’t perfect… any futuristic world is going to be a lot different than where we’re at now, but we’ll have the same problems- sin, mainly. The story, like other genres, doesn’t have to preachy- it can explore Christian themes and morals without going into a sermon or anything like that. So there are a lot of ways to do this, I’m just trying to pull them out of my brain lol.
I guess sci-fi feels more realistic when things are advanced- blasters, ships, stuff like that- than when other parts of the world are advanced, like the force in Star Wars. Also it’s a lot easier to keep a Christian worldview when you don’t try to create something like the force. That’s not saying every person in your story will find your God’s laws, but the world shouldn’t be blatently against it, if that makes sense. In my opinion every world should have a creator, but there are some different spins off of that that seem to work really well, too.
Anyway, that was a lot of rambling, but I hope you can find something out of that. 😅
Follow your heart, but take your brain with you.
July 23, 2023 at 7:36 pm #151991That’s ok!! XD I love your new profile, by the way!

Yep, that’s true, lol. I know a lot of Christian books do this too much, and yeah, like you said, basically preach to the reader. Yep!

Yeah, right! Because the force is sort of like a God figure, but different? (I’ve only seen the first star wars movie, lol)
In my opinion every world should have a creator, but there are some different spins off of that that seem to work really well, too.
Yeah, I think so too! You used like the Celestial Phoenix or something, right, as some sort of deity?
I did! Thanks for that! 😉 I’ll let you know if I come up with an idea or more thoughts on this! (And I’m excited to see what you think of some sci Fi books 😅 By the way, did you see my post on the reading topic? Can’t remember what it’s called, lol, but I tagged you for a book recommendation 😉)

July 23, 2023 at 7:41 pm #151993@kyronthearcanin yeah I can agree with that.
I actually modified the star wars mythology a bit in my dragon fanfics to make it….idk, more like what you’re saying? Like the dragons believe in an obvious creator of the universe, etc. (they have different names for him depending on the species) and while there’s probably differences in how they go about that part of their lives, there isn’t anything like really weird/creepy/dark in there, and I don’t go into quite as much detail on some things as the original story did.
@hybridlore I’d mostly agree with solfyre on that. The genre, by necessity, kind of has to follow unrealistic ideas of the future (actually, Star Wars is in a completely different “timeline” per se from the real world so it kinda doesn’t count as future, but since it’s a good example of the sci-fi genre I’m not going to argue)However, I think the problem is not with the genre in and of itself but with the worldview of the writers and the audience, so if you stick with your own worldview and don’t change it because someone else told you to, you should be good.
Also, this is kinda random, but many sci-fi I’ve seen may have unbiblical concepts (mostly like evolutionary theory and stuff) but actually uphold a key truth, such as “love is not limited by space and time,” or “humans are imperfect and shouldn’t strive for perfection by themselves,” that sort of thing.

July 23, 2023 at 7:41 pm #151994I guess the force could be considered as a sort of God figure. I think about it as putting the creation over the Creator, and obviously that’s not a good idea in writing lol.
Yep, the Celestial Phoenix is mine! I took such a long time deciding on it that the Phoenix doesn’t show up a whole lot in the beginning chapters- which, by the way, I need to go back and edit. But yep, the deity does come more into play later on, at least if I can find a way to correctly write it.
Good! I’m glad you did, because my brain’s been all frazzled lately XD. Sounds good!
Hmm I need to read up on some Sci-fi, actually. I did see it, but it’s been a while since I checked up on that topic lol.

July 23, 2023 at 7:41 pm #151995Oh and @kyronthearcanin i like your new signature.

July 23, 2023 at 7:42 pm #151996That sounds cool! I admit I’m not good at fanfictions for that reason, because I don’t want to have to completely change a story, I guess. It’s cool that you can do that, though! The only fanfiction right now I’m co-authoring, but it’s a Wingfeather Saga fanfic so there wasn’t anything to really change XD

July 23, 2023 at 7:45 pm #151997@acancello The Lorax was one of the best movie adaptations!
For me, the other best one would be Flora and Ulysses. That movie was actually almost better than the book; call me weird, but the plot was more complete in my opinion.

July 23, 2023 at 7:47 pm #151999@kyronthearcanin cool!
yeah, it actually wasn’t much to change, since I’m writing characters more along the lines of the Republic clone soldiers/rebel alliance/random mercenaries than the Jedi/Sith dynamic, so there isn’t as much to mess around with, although I did tweak some things.

July 23, 2023 at 7:48 pm #152000Ah, yeah, that makes sense. My dad loves Star Wars so I see quite a bit of it, though not as much recently I guess.

July 23, 2023 at 7:56 pm #152004@kyronthearcanin mine too, and my brother, and me (why do you think I write about it, lol)
have you seen any of the recent shows? I actually kinda prefer them to the movies; I write most of my fanfics based off those.

July 23, 2023 at 7:56 pm #152005Yeah, that’s really cool! And yeah, I get the different timeline thing, I think if I start something I’ll put it in a different world, probably. Yeah, that makes sense! Thanks! 😉
Oh gotcha, yeah. I kind of think of it as White Light from Fawkes (idk if you guys have read that, if you haven’t, you NEED to) but tbh I really don’t know much about it.
I think about it as putting the creation over the Creator, and obviously that’s not a good idea in writing lol.
Yep, lol.
Ohhh gotcha, yeah that makes sense! I can’t wait to read about it! ☺️
Good! I’m glad you did, because my brain’s been all frazzled lately XD. Sounds good!
XD
Ooh, you’re doing a wingfeather saga fanfic??

July 23, 2023 at 8:00 pm #152007XD
I haven’t seen the newest ones (we don’t do a whole lot of tv at the moment) but I watched some others based off of the clone wars, and yeah, I liked them better for sure.
That book is on my list, but I haven’t quite gotten to it yet XD
Yep! We’re limited to 7,000 words, actually, because it’s for a competition on YWW, but it’s gonna be during the events of the book from Esben’s perspective. It’s been a lot of fun!

July 24, 2023 at 10:04 am #152033XD Yeah, ikr! I have so many I want to read at some point… lol
Oooohhh! That would be so cool!! For just the last book, or for all of them?
How’s YWW, by the way?

July 24, 2023 at 10:37 am #152041XD I don’t think my list will ever end at this point lol
Well, we’re splitting it into three scenes- when he’s searching for his family, when he finds Kal, and when he saves the Jewels in the end. So yeah, mainly last book I think.
It’s been really good! There’s a whole lot to learn and a lot of people willing to help each other write all kinds of stuff, so it’s been awesome.

July 24, 2023 at 11:08 am #152044Hmm… I guess KP ate my post, lol
