Tavar
“That is a long story.” His smile slipped away altogether. There was no way to call it back. He continued scratching letters for a minute, his clear eyes turning greener as tears gathered in their corners. They never fell.
“It was outlawed for the great evils which befell those who spoke it. The tales it has told are bitter. Dark. Perhaps some think it is better forgotten.”
Bryce looked confused. Tavar shrugged, not sure how to explain it all without speakinging directly of things he had rather not touch.
History was a ticklish matter. Especially when it involved beacons, trials, and of all things, family.
If he closed his eyes he could see the fires glowing in the distance. He could feel the saddle creaking under him and smell that acrid smell he would later know was death’s favorite perfume – decay. Worse, he could see her golden hair stained the deep scarlet that had haunted his dreams for decades. And even now, he sensed an overwhelming wave of helplessness threatening to drown him again.
He cleared his throat.
“Nevertheless, my mother loved it, so my father’s people will always speak it. It is a good language, formed from the Voice that created the world.” He laid the tablet on the table beside him and turned his attention back to Bryce. “Any other questions? Anything or anyone with which you would like my help?”
Still a ChaosGremlin™ on the inside.
Lois
Lois nodded to both of them. The way the blond boy looked at him as Moth introduced them made Lois feel he needed to straighten his posture.
“Good to meet you,” Ellis said as he and Moth claimed chairs next to him. Ari sat farther away, but still within earshot. “Have you attended this academy very long?” Ellis asked Lois. He seemed very friendly. Lois opened his mouth to respond, but shut it when he saw the professor walking to the front of the classroom. Class was starting.
