This weekend I saw a girl who I’m certain is a writer, though I never talked to her (I’m trying to get contact information for someone who might know her, so I can ask for her contact information in a slightly less creepy way than otherwise, but that’s another story), and she reminded me how much of my writing life I spent alone.
I started writing when I was about eight or nine, as near as I can figure, which gives me a solid decade of practice. I didn’t have a writing group of any kind till I was fourteen, and that was online, and I got a lot of the “great job!” kind of feedback. Most of the writers in that group were about at my level, too, so I wasn’t really learning from them. I didn’t hear “Show, don’t tell” till I was fifteen (from the Composition teacher in the first college class I took). You learn things a lot faster when you have a group of people who are above your skill level, you know? It also helps an awful lot to have people who can tell you things, instead of you having to learn through trial and error all by yourself.
I left the online writing group about three years ago, having outgrown it, and from then on was pretty much on my own till @Hope brought Kingdom Pen to my notice (and even then I stalked for about a year before joining). I’ve learned more from the Theme videos, and even from the Jumpstart Your Novel videos, than in the writing classes I’m taking at college (though I have learned a lot about writing from my literature and philosophy classes there, so it’s not entirely wasted).

May 16, 2017 at 8:08 pm #33314@Northerner That’s so wonderful. 😀 Great.
May 16, 2017 at 8:12 pm #33317@Northerner We’re glad to have you. 🙂
Personally, I know I would never be where I am without KP.

May 16, 2017 at 8:15 pm #33319Yay for KP and whoever invented it! Is that person still alive, btw, @Daeus, if you know? That Eli someone; is he at all involved with anything still?
May 16, 2017 at 8:22 pm #33322@emma-flournoy I don’t believe so.

May 16, 2017 at 8:22 pm #33323@Daeus Hm.
May 16, 2017 at 8:47 pm #33324@Northerner Yes, Kingdom Pen is wonderful. I don’t know where I’d be without the things I’ve learned and the people I’ve met here.
INTJ - Inhumane. No-feelings. Terrible. Judgment and doom on everyone.
May 16, 2017 at 9:55 pm #33330I’ve been here on KP for a MUUUUCH shorter time, than many people here. Perhaps even most(or all) of them. I’ve participated much less as well, but I do think this site has been extremely helpful. 🙂 Honestly, I do read this site more often than you think, but I lurk in the shadows because….I’m batman.
May 17, 2017 at 10:57 am #33336@Northerner thanks for sharing your story. I started writing when I was thirteen, found KP when I was fourteen, and never looked back. That’s… WOW. O.o Is that four years ago? Yikes…
But yes. Anyway. KP is wonderful and amazing and fantastical and too good to be true and I would probably have quit writing by now if I’d never found them. Thank you, KP, for saving me from an eternity of writingless boredom.May 17, 2017 at 2:44 pm #33352@Northerner Thanks for telling your story! I love love love Kingdom Pen, most of what I have learned about writing has been because of this site. And though I am not here overly much, the forum has been amazing, thank you all for creating such a unique and supportive writing community!

May 19, 2017 at 1:18 pm #33455Hey @Kate-Flournoy, I know for a fact you found it in 2015 or late 2014, ’cause early 2015 is when the Begin Your Novel contest was, and that’s the first thing you did soon after you found it. So that’s about 2 years. Just sayin’. 😉
May 19, 2017 at 1:23 pm #33456Ah…siblings…sometimes I wish mine would just let me be wrong lol. @emma-flournoy @kate-flournoy

May 19, 2017 at 1:32 pm #33461@That_Writer_Girl_99 *cringe* Well, it bothers me to see inaccurate information floating around. I had to say it. 😛
Eh…hm…that depends. 😀 What?
May 19, 2017 at 1:33 pm #33462@Emma-Flournoy I bow to your superior knowledge of facts. XD You’re probably right.
