So, in this book I’m writing, there is a guy who plans to kill certain people (Or at least render them useless.) This thing needs to spread, but I really don’t want to do the cliched plague thing. Does anyone have any ideas?

Oh wow, what a topic @Jess. XD

Okay. It really depends on the genre. Tell me the genre, and I’ll see what horrible outlandish things I can think of. 😛

Within Sci Fi, I guess it would be a seemingly “successful” utopia based story, (versus dystopian) with a definite lean towards socialism. Those who don’t fit the mold of society disappear with the help of ‘blank’ It also needs to spread…
Outlandish things are most certainly appreciated @kate-flournoy! 😛

Ooh, scifi… we can go a lot of different places, then. *grins*
M’kay… first idea. They could invent this virus that spreads by contact of skin to skin— it just has to touch you and then the spores go to work, and anyone else you touch catches the same virus. It’s a powder or something, and even one grain of it transfers the disease to the first ‘candidate’.
Orrrrr… they could put something in the water supply.
Or they could… hm… just a sec. Do they spread it? Or does it get out of hand and spread all by itself? Because if they’re trying to make it spread, then you can do just about anything— little disease-carrying drones, ‘shots’ when you visit the doctor, poisoned food… anything. If you had disease-carrying drones, the drones could revolt and start spreading the disease themselves. 😀

            Anything there @Jess?

@jess Well, there could be a bug that goes around biting everyone (however, I just read a 39 clues with a plot like that…with bees…ew) Erm. Maybe he uses it through radioactive waves? Some sort of wave is very sci-fi-ish. Sounds waves, light waves, gamma rays, manta rays…wait a minute.
Maybe he puts it inside some mass manufactured food that everyone eats. Since its futurey, maybe the law requires everyone to eat it, and that how the villain does it. Maybe he injects it into some sort of plant that’s universal and the pollen spreads to everyone. Maybe he puts it into the water supply so that its a never ending cycle. You know, evaporation, condensation, rain and all that.

Thanks @dragon-snapper! I think I’ve got it now. And on another track, would you recommend 39 clues? I saw some a while ago, but haven’t read it.

@jess … Hmm. Good question. It really depends on what type of thing you like to read. I mean, it’s very actiony, but not in a medieval sort of way. Its like any Marvel movie, without the superpowers, and its a book, and the main characters are kids. People die like, every few books, which I don’t like.
But I really am not sure because I read the first part of the series, like, a year or two ago; the second part maybe a year ago; the third, half a year; and the fourth, a few months ago. I’m not reading the fifth because it got weird. (zombie weird)
So-o, that was probably not helpful at all. Heh, sorry. I’d say that it really depends on your judgment. I know it can be too much for people, but at the same time, they are good books. If I were you, I would try the first book (from the library) and see if you like it or not. That’s basically what I did.
And good luck on your story!
(and if you have any other questions about the 39 clues, I can give you more info, I just didn’t know how many spoilers you wanted.)

Ah, dragons. So vague and mysterious! 😛
I guess I’ll check out the first one. 🙂
