There was too much silence in his room. Onnendel pushed himself up on his elbow to see over the mound of pillows. The sunlight that splashed across the floor had begun to dry into a faint stain of brightness. Everything else was dark.
“Ada!”
Nothing. Onnendel sank back into his bed, trembling from head to foot. It was cold. So cold.
The door opened with a soft click. Onnendel stretched out a hand and waited, heart pounding. It was a strange hand. If it was not attached to his wrist, he would have called it too thin to be his. Too white.
Someone took it with a warm grasp.
“Ada.”
His father leaned into view, a smile on his lips that did not reach his eyes.
