Salvete scriptores (hello writers)!
I’m Bethany, or Bethania if you prefer to use the Latin version of my name. I read a lot and write too little, but I am trying to get better. When I do write, it’s poetry, high fantasy, or non-romantic contemporary because I am a miserable rock who hates love. I am a phlegmatic INTP, if that means anything (I don’t think those tests mean much, but darn it, they’re fun).
I like music! I don’t really play it (I fell off the ukulele wagon and need to get back on), but I like indie folk and alternative probably the best. The Arcadian Wild and Twenty One Pilots are my two favorite bands, and they’re quite different from each other.
I like ancient stuff! History, mythology, languages, whatever. If it happened before the fall of Rome, I’m definitely into it. And I’m also fascinated by Incan history. I think it was The Emperor’s New Groove and a hilarious song about Pachacuti that did it for me.
Oh, and I’m a homeschooler, which you could probably already tell. Any Blimey Cow fans out there?
Valete (goodbye, or literally, be well!)

September 1, 2021 at 1:27 pm #104064Hey! Welcome to KP! I’m honoured to be the very first to welcome you to the Kingdom. You’re going to love it here! My name’s Grace, though most round here call me Kads. 😛 Hey, fellow high fantasy writer over here! *holds out hand for a high five* What’s your current work(s) in progress about? If you want to discuss WIPs in extensive detail, btw, then head over to our WIP chat thread.
I’m gonna contrast you over here–I’m a hopeless romantic, but hey, that’s okay, everyone’s got their own opinions XD (yo those tests are really dang fun ngl)
Oh, indie folk can be really nice! (and same here about the uke thing lol) Heyyy, I love Twenty One Pilots too!! What’s your favourite song by them?? 🙂
Oooh, that’s pretty cool. History can be pretty fun! 🙂 I’m also a homeschooler, but idk what ‘blimey cow’ is XD
Some questions for ya!
1. Pineapple on pizza – yes or no? (beat ya to it, @devastate-lasting 😉)
2. What’s your favourite book?
3. What’s your favourite season?
4. When did you begin writing?
5. Do you consider avocado to be a fruit?
Lol, I know those were random, don’t mind me. Allow me to tag a few of my friends to give you a hearty welcome to the Kingdom! <3

if nothing's really real
i'll make the winter now my homeSeptember 1, 2021 at 1:52 pm #104068@sparrowhawke Greetings! I remember Blimey Cow vaguely from years past, but since a while ago I have not watched them. Twenty One Pilots I do love, as well as The Emporer’s New Groove.
Your name sounds familiar; are you on Story Embers as well?
Lately, it's been on my brain
Would you mind letting me know
If hours don't turn into daysSeptember 1, 2021 at 3:51 pm #104071Hey Kads! That’s honestly a really cool name; how’d you come up with it?
I have around three WIPs I keep tossing around in my head and they are
1) A contemporary YA about siblings, community, and issues in the church (I’m really passionate about this story but it’s VERY hard to write). This is the story though where I discovered the actual joy of “write what you know”.
2) A high fantasy that messes with the Chosen One trope (I won’t go into detail on how, because spoilers, but I hope it’s twisty and fun)
3) Another high fantasy set in an Incan-inspired land with magical minerals and mountain monsters.
What kind of high fantasy do you write? I keep stuffing all my stories in the same world, and they all involve elemental magic and lots of different races.
Ooh, favorite TOP song? So hard to pick. I’ve definitely been jamming to “Bounce Man” (and really all the SAI songs). And “Nico and the Niners” (as well as the whole Trench saga) has a special meaning to me. What about you?
Blimey Cow is a comedy YouTube channel run by two homeschooled brothers (they’re now adults and graduated with families and all but they started when they were teens). They do funny rant/advice videos I guess you could say? Lots of sarcasm and good-natured jokes about Christian homeschool culture.
To answer your excellent questions:
1) I like pineapple on pizza! It’s all over now, but when my mom, who grew up here on the West Coast, went to NY and asked about getting pineapple pizza, everyone thought she was crazy.
2) So hard to choose just one! I think I’ll go with The Eagle of the Ninth for now, since I’m reading its sequel The Silver Branch. But I have a ton others listed on my profile.
3) Autumn, even though the leaves just turn yellow and die here. I’d love to see real autumn someday.
4) Hmm, I guess four or five years ago? I unfortunately have hardly finished any big projects, but I started thinking about story ideas when I was around 11. Didn’t write them down sadly. I kinda remember them and know they’d be dumb now, but still. I wish I could’ve read them.
5) Avocado is definitely a fruit. It has a pit. It’s a fruit. (I am one of those people who talk about all the fruits on the veggie trays. Yes I know there is a difference between scientific and culinary vegetables. I just like to be nit-picky.)
Thank you for the warm welcome!
September 1, 2021 at 4:00 pm #104073Yes I’m on Story Embers! Same name. KP seems to be more active, so I thought I’d join.
The Emperor’s New Groove is a pure delight. I’d heard it was super good, and I was not disappointed.
September 1, 2021 at 4:40 pm #104080@sparrowhawke Hello! My name is Jodi. I write fantasy, historical fiction, and the occasional dystopian piece. I also like ancient stuff–I minored in history (mostly medieval Europe, American history, and the entire history of Japan haha) when I was in college.
I like music too. I play piano, sing, and used to play electric bass! My favorite band is Joseph–they’re a trio of sisters from Oregon, which is where I live, so that’s cool XD
I was a homeschooler/online student through all of my schooling after 2nd grade! And I am also a Blimey Cow fan 🙂
A couple questions:
What’s your current WIP about?
Are you entering in the Dragon Slayer article contest KP posted a while ago?
Anyway, it’s so nice to meet you! Welcome to Kingdom Pen.

September 1, 2021 at 6:32 pm #104083Hey Bethany!!! (I’m on SE too, but KP is def more active.) Nice to meet you, I see you’re a lover of Latin! I’m taking Latin 4 this year which should be fun. A little about me: I write dystopian, spy, thriller/suspense books. I’m an ENFP and my favorite music is r&b and hip/hop. I go to a classical Christian school, which starts in less than a week.
My WIP is about a girl who is a spy and is trying not to fall in love with one of the characters I wrote when I was eleven XD (but don’t worry, he’s amazing). That’s about all I came up with so far XDD
Anyways, questions for you:
Do you prefer the sunrise or sunset?
What’s your favorite movie of all time?
Where is your ideal vacay destination?
Anyways, welcome to KP! Glad you joined!
what we do in life echoes in eternity
-gladiator, 2000September 1, 2021 at 7:59 pm #104090Did you get my reply? It seems KP ate it. Maybe it got messed up when I tried to edit it?
Wow, it seems you know a lot of history! How did you get interested in Japanese history?
Electric bass is really cool! What kinds of stuff could you play on it?
I’ve been homeschooled my whole life and started taking online classes in high school. This is actually my first year taking more than one online class, so hopefully I can manage it.
Current WIPs, I have a few. One is YA contemporary about siblings, community, and issues in the church, mixed with nerdy humor. Yeah. It’s a bit weird, but I really love it. I’m finally discovering the joy of “write what you know”. It really adds creativity to my writing.
The other is a high fantasy that plays with the Chosen One trope and includes a psychological/elemental/energy magic system I’m still hashing out. But I really love the main character and his mentor. They’re both so unreliable.
I do have an article in the works for the contest! It’s about the Chosen One trope (see above, lol). I’m not sure if it fits with October’s theme, but I’ll submit it anyway since that doesn’t matter. I’ve been wanting to write this piece for a while and I finally have motivation.
Hi Ella! Yay, another Latinist! I’m taking AP Latin this year, which I guess is one level above Latin 4? What Latin authors have you read? I’ve done modified Caesar (I’ll be doing unmodified Caesar this year) and Cicero. That’s great you go to a classical Christian school! I love being homeschooled, but if I had to go to school, I’d definitely want to go to a school like that.
Who are some of your favorite musical artists? I don’t know much about R&B and hip-hop.
I like the sunset! Because I’m a night owl and I hardly ever see the sunrise XD
Hmm, I honestly have a LONG lists of movies to see and I really don’t have a favorite at the moment. But I do like Rogue One (not a SW fan besides that and the Mandalorian), Soul, The Princess Bride, Onward, and Up. I’m more of a TV show person, but even there, I have a lot to watch.
I would love to go to Yosemite and see the sequoias. I have an idea for a fantasy land where people live in these giant trees (a little like Lothlorien, honestly) and ever since that, I’ve wanted to see the giant trees in person. But I’d also like to go Athens, Machu Picchu, and Hobbiton in NZ 😉 I’m not much a traveler though, so those are more just wild dreams that I’ll probably never fulfill.
September 1, 2021 at 10:40 pm #104102@sparrowhawke Ah yes, it seems it was eaten by the Forum Balrog. 🙁 But I was able to see it on your profile, so fear not! 😉
Heyy, thanks! Haha. Oh, actually, it’s short for Kadotake, which was one of my former aliases! But my close friends on here nicknamed me Kads. XD It fits me better, imo!
Ooooh, all of those sound super interesting!! The second one esp intrigues me 🙂 Can I know a little more? XD
Oh… uh… if I were to start talking about my series I’d never stop XD so lemme ask you this: do you want the abbreviated form, or the full-on lecture? Because my main series is eight books long and that’s not even counting the other unrelated books under my different pen name. *coughs*
Hmm. Um. (don’t hate me for this) I really only listen to a few of their songs from Blurryface… I know, I know, I have to expand my horizons. I’m gonna try to listen to more of them when I get time.
Oh, cool! Haha. Never heard of them before. XD Sounds funny!!
Ooh, yes, I love it too. HAHA! That’s so funny!! XDDD
Wow, I’ve never heard of either of those! What are they about? 🙂 They sound like interesting titles!
Yesss, I love autumn too. My favourite season as well. 😉 Oh, “real autumn” is very beautiful. So poetic, what with all the colours! 😀
Ah, everyone struggles with writing things down at first. And trust me, it’s fine to take a long time on WIPs! @kathleenramm spent about… six years, I think, writing a novel with her siblings! (Correct me if I’m wrong, Kathleen! LOL.) Yeah, I have the WIPs I started when I was little and… ahem… they really suck. I never read them. XD
Well, yes, but also no. XD Avocados are, in fact, categorized within a subclass of fruits called “drupes”. They’re all the things with pits–cherries, nectarines, peaches, and, yes, avocados. So yeah. You’re right. But I’m being technical. XD
Fun fact, did you know that, in French, the words for “avocado” and “lawyer” are the same? They’re both “avocat”. XD SOMEONE HIRE AN AVOCADO!!!
Of course! <3

if nothing's really real
i'll make the winter now my homeSeptember 2, 2021 at 9:30 am #104106Hi! It’s awesome to have you here!
I love TOP as well! My favorite album from them would probably be Trench. Fun fact, my family used to live in Ohio and my sister went to school with Tyler and Joseph from TOP for a few years.
She remembers passing them in the hall but they were never friends. When I was little I remember her saying that some guys from school were starting a band and then her listening to their very first album as soon as it came out. It’s crazy how big they’ve become.
You like history? I do too! But I mainly consume it through podcasts like Hardcore History. I’m currently listening to Super Nova in the East, which is about WWII. I like how he doesn’t just state dates and events, but gives a background and talks about the people and soldiers on both sides. About how their culture and the way they grew up effected the war.
Quick question, what is something most people would never expect you do when they meet you for the first time?
September 2, 2021 at 10:15 am #104107@kathleenramm Yoooo wait that’s actually really epic tho–
Lately, it's been on my brain
Would you mind letting me know
If hours don't turn into daysSeptember 2, 2021 at 12:08 pm #104108@sparrowhawke Haha yeah I just really like history, I don’t actually know how I got interested in Japanese history–it’s just kinda been something I’ve always been enthusiastic about learning XD
Electric bass was super fun, I could mostly play rhythms and I was in a very small band for awhile, but I’ve never played electric bass for a crowd haha
You’ll do great at online classes! Both your WIPs sound super interesting, and I’m so excited you’re joining the Dragon Slayer contest! As you can tell I’m really excited to see what kind of articles everyone comes up with, and the Chosen One trope sounds like a great topic for October 🙂
September 2, 2021 at 1:11 pm #104110Hullo and welcome!
Lol, I’ve probably watched the Emperors New Groove like, 40 times so far in my life. It’s very good.
Yea, I’m and INTJ actually. Do you know what those letters stand for? I found a cool graph online that shows what it means. Basically you pick the letters based off of words that describe you. It looks kinda like this:
Introvert (I) or Extrovert (E)
(I = person who fuels up by themselves) and (E=person who fuels up around others)
Sensors (S) or Intuitives (N)
(S = realistic people who focus on details) and (N = people who focus on creativity and possible outcomes)
Thinkers (T) or Feelers (F)
(T = people who are logically based and think through things more) and (F = people who are more based in emotion and act on feelings)
Judgers (J) or Perceivers (P)
(J = Organized and prepared, sticking to plans) and (P = people who don’t thrive on planning, and do things more spontaneously)
So you take the letters that describe you from the list. I’m an INTJ which means I’m and introvert, I consider things more creatively, I’m thinky, and I like plans.
Blimey Cow is so great! They’ve gotten funnier and better over the years.
I love music I play Piano and mostly listen to pop and classical.
History has got to be my second favorite subject in school. The stories of other people are always so intriguing. I like Rome’s early history and Latin as well. I studied Latin last year i think(2020 hazy).
Have you read Percy Jackson? It’s an incredible modernized blend of Roman and Greek history(the second series has more Roman) with some of the best characters I’ve ever read abt.
Whew, sorry for the long message. Have a nice day!
September 4, 2021 at 12:11 am #104173Unfortunately, I can’t tell you much about the one story since I’m still hammering out details myself (for every story idea I get, I get a thousand different plotlines for it), but the one character who’s being told he’s the Chosen One turns out not to be the Chosen One at all, the villain is masquerading as a good guy, and everyone is just so stinking unreliable. And if it adds anything, I want a dark/desert/fire/lightning vibe for the whole thing. I need to research it more, but I want to base the world off of ancient Babylonia and Assyria. Oh, and there’s also a psychological element to the magic system that is making everything even more complicated but I’m sure it will be EPIC once I get it figured out.
Sure, give me the full-on lecture 😉
Honestly, I haven’t listened to much of Blurryface or their self-titled album. I like “The Judge”, but the other popular Blurryface songs I got tired of. (I’m not trying to be a snob; I just honestly don’t like them as much as most of their other songs.)
So The Eagle of the Ninth and The Silver Branch are set in Roman Britain. TEotN follows a cohort centurion, who after he gets injured and dismissed from service, journeys north to find out what happened to the lost Ninth Legion, which was his father’s legion. It’s kind of a slow book, but I love the writing and characters (and of course, anything Roman). TSB is about two Romans who are trying to stop a tyrant from taking the British throne (because apparently this guy named Carausius declared himself emperor of Britain after the Roman empire split–I never knew that before).
Haha, that’s funny about avocados in French. If you’re into chemistry, you might like the joke about Avocado’s number being the key to guacamole (feel free to groan but I’ll never apologize for puns).
September 4, 2021 at 12:28 am #104174Hey Kathleen! I really like Trench too. The whole DEMA lore is so cool. I honestly think there should be a movie, or at least a book.
That is so cool about your sister! Small world huh?
I definitely prefer the more cultural and personal side to history. But anytime I crack open my history textbook, I get so many ideas for plots and themes to write about. What’s your favorite time period? Mine is ancient and classical.
Hmm, I feel like I’m pretty predictable. Nerdy, bookish introvert. I guess maybe that I like chemistry? I think I come across as more of the word nerd than the STEM nerd. What about you?
Yeah, I even searched KP to see if someone had written about Chosen Ones before, but I didn’t find anything. And then I searched Story Embers, and didn’t find much there either. So now I’m even more excited to do it.
Hi Anatra! Actually, the letters go a little deeper than that. If you want to learn more, search “cognitive functions”. I thought I was an INTJ just going off the letters, but once I learned about cognitive functions, I pegged myself as INTP. If you’re INTJ, your two main cognitive functions (the ones you use most) are Introverted Intuition and Extroverted Thinking. You get random, creative ideas, but you make logical, objective decisions. My top two are Introverted Thinking and Extroverted Intuition. I compartmentalize things into categories in my mind and brainstorm a lot. That’s my explanations of them; I haven’t done a lot of research, so take all of that with a grain of salt XD
I have read Percy Jackson! I like the first book the best. I haven’t read the spin-off series, but my sister read all of The Heroes of Olympus, and the first two-and-a-half Apollo books. The spin-offs don’t really interest me. Well, I guess HoO doesn’t. The writing seemed rather bland. I flipped through the Apollo books and I like his voice. I think first-person narration is Rick Riordan’s forte, not third.
Is your profile picture from Legend of Korra? I just finished ATLA and absolutely loved it (well, except for the romances–I’m not a romance fan). I’m not sure whether I’ll watch Korra though. I think I’m going to read the comics next.
