April 4, 2017 at 3:50 pm #29377@Rachelle I think everything’s been covered already 😛 I would just add that the reader might feel cheated if the character seeking revenge gets away without any consequences for his actions. Usually stories that involve revenge end in the protagonist either realizing how wrong their thoughts are and “converting,” so to say, or carrying out the revenge and suffering severe consequences. I guess the best way to handle this is to look at the end of your story through the eyes of a reader and gauge your reaction (i.e. does it feel complete? does it warn me not to go down this path myself? or does it show me the consequences of such actions?)
Like @kate-flournoy said, I think vengeance storylines are quite interesting 😀

(I think this is the weirdest conversation I’ve ever been involved with on KP yet)
April 4, 2017 at 4:00 pm #29381I agree with @ethryndal
I think there’s a fine line between deciding to let a character get away with his actions–in spite of what he does to get revenge–and crafting a path for the character that shows the consequences for revenge. If you think about it, a lot of stories in the Bible show this theme; anger has consequences, which is why the Bible speaks so strongly about not holding grudges. The first story that comes to mind regarding this is Cain and Abel–jealous of his brothers’ favor with God, Cain kills his younger brother, and his ability to work the soil, as was his occupation at the time, is severed as a result. (See Genesis 4)

April 4, 2017 at 4:17 pm #29391Okay, but to try and not totally derail the conversation (or at least salvage my reputation), I completely agree with what everyone else has said, @rachelle. They all just said it first.
