So I have never read any manga before but after watching Avatar: The Last Airbender, I’m interested in exploring it. So what are your guys’ manga recs? Specifically ones that don’t focus on romance and might be similar to ATLA.
The only ones I’ve really heard of are Haikyuu, The Promised Neverland, and Fullmetal Alchemist, so if you have read those, I’d love your thoughts on them!
November 19, 2021 at 9:03 pm #107433@sparrowhawke Ah, ’tis my time to shine.
I’ve read so much manga in the last few years I’m not sure if I should be ashamed or not. At this point I’ve been desensitised to most things so I’m going to watch myself when recommending stuff.
When people ask for reccs usually the first one I recommend is Fullmetal Alchemist! It’s absolutely perfect, the characters, the plot, the themes, the worldbuilding… I love the author a lot, so if you would prefer something more along the realistic/coming of age kind of manga I would also recommend Silver Spoon, about a boy who goes to farming school, and it really impacted me in this past year.
Some other slice-of-life ones I enjoy are Yotsuba&! and Barakamon, both of which are excellent.
But anyways, judging by the titles you dropped, perhaps you would like something more on the fantasy side of things. To Your Eternity and Noragami are both pretty good (that I remember), though I have had to take breaks from them both because they get really, really sad at times.
Spy x Family is a really fun manga, I love it a lot, fake family to real family dynamic with secret identities and comedical situations, etc.
By far the best manga series I have read, though, come from Naoki Urasawa, with his series Monster, 20th Century Boys, and Pluto being among some of the best things I have read, be it novel or manga. They’re all masterpieces, classics… I do have to warn you, though, those series are very much on the mature side. So maybe sometime later.
But yeah, Fullmetal Alchemist is probably gonna be the most similar thing to ATLA, at least, that’s what I peg, given the vibes of ATLA. If I think of anymore I’ll tell you.
Lately, it's been on my brain

If hours don't turn into daysNovember 19, 2021 at 9:55 pm #107434Thanks Linyang! I’m interested in fantasy and slice-of-life–just stuff that doesn’t have the main plot revolve around romance (I don’t enjoy that in any medium lol).
What’s the mature content in those last manga? (I’m 18 truth be told, but I don’t enjoy gory violence or explicit stuff)
November 19, 2021 at 11:12 pm #107438@sparrowhawke Oh, if you’re 18, I’m sure it’ll be fine. I read Monster when I was fifteen. It’s not too gory, and the most sexual stuff is all implied, nothing really explicit on screen. There’s a lot of murder (crime genre for a lot of it) and a lot of very heavy themes, but it’s all very good, so I highly recommend.

If hours don't turn into daysNovember 20, 2021 at 3:38 am #107446I really enjoy the Royal Tutor series. It’s kinda an alternate history manga series in which the kingdom, Granzireich, is based on the Austro-Hungarian empire, somewhere in the 1800’s. It’s about how Heine, the new Royal Tutor, has to teach the four youngest princes to be candidates to the throne. It’s a really fun series and one of the most suitable ones I’ve ever read — we have all of the books out in English to date.
The only thing that could really be considered bad in it is the occasional bad word and the fact the youngest prince (14) is a ladies boy and thinks he’s the world’s gift to women. However, this isn’t the focus of the story, and all of his inappropriate comments are definitely treated as inappropriate — while they’re also kinda funny, just cause of how his brothers and particularly the tutor react to them.
There’s also A Place Further Than The Universe — I’ve only watched the anime of that one, but it’s about these 4 girls who travel to Antarctica. There’s a bit of stupid content in the first couple of episodes, but it’s nothing explicit or super bad.
My all-time favourite manga series is Snow White with the Red Hair — however, this is a romance, so you might not like it. It’s the cleanest romance I’ve ever read, though, especially in anime/manga — the prince (her boyfriend) in it is just so honourable. And this one is more fantasy than any of the others I’ve mentioned so far. In terms of content, it’s basically okay, again, a few swear words, a couple of chapters where there’s a little blood — not bad compared to most, believe me. It’s only M-rated as an anime. And in terms of adult content, there’s a bit of implied stuff in comments, but nothing ever actually happens. I’d just recommend skipping the Onsen (Japanese-style public baths) chapter if you ever did read it. Again, the romance is the main plot, though, however, the reason I love this series so much is the characters — you just get so attached to them. And it’s not all kissing and rubbish like that. It’s actually just pretty sweet.
I’m also an 18-year-old who doesn’t like super gory or explicit stuff. And I absolutely LOVE ATLA. It’s such an amazing program — such a good story! Especially Zuko’s arc😁.
Anyway, hope this gives you some ideas.
The end of a story, a beautiful picture; a feeling of longing yet hope~
That’s my wish to create. -
