Well in your hypothetical scenario, hmm… I don’t experience many hypothetical situations myself so its hard to speak very authoritatively. Of course it depends on the person. In such a situation, I do think one might cry, but you see, to my knowledge (which is very limited. Anyone to second this?) men don’t usually just start crying (when they cry. Of course they don’t just start crying any old time). As far as I know, they would only usually do that if they are pouring out their grief on their unfortunate listener. But then again, if they were completely alone, and his grief was weighing very heavily upon him, and he all of a sudden started having very fond memories of things very near and dear to him, and the two contemplations mingled intensely in his very brooding and dejected mind, I think he might have some tears drain down his face and a few sobs (maybe even gasps) mingle among them.

September 28, 2015 at 2:17 am #6042Ok firstly @Daeus PLEASE DO NOT SAY ANYWAYS ARGHHHHHHHHHHH IT IS TERRIBLE ENGLISH MY GOODNESS PLEASE DON’T THAT’S JUST LIKE SAYING BY THE WAYS WHICH DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE.
Ok now that that’s over. Umm…where are all the other male people on this forum? Hello? Daniel or someone? Not that you’re any bad, Daeus, but you made me kinda mad. But your tips are ok lah. But I would like mixed replies on this? What if my character is a kind of emotional guy and then his father figure dies or something? Then would he cry if he’s taken away unreasonably and unable to mourn for him? Would he cry after the trauma?
Guys, come onto this thread! We need you!
September 28, 2015 at 8:07 am #6046Sounds good. I’ve probably embarrassed myself enough for the week. 40 kg or so I should think. Right on schedule.
Boy, I was just about to use the forbidden word, but I won’t. Personally, I like it just for the sound and to give the impression of a kinda laid back sort of style which is rather my disposition on a form. Seeing as you dislike it so much, I’ll try not to use it when you’re around, though of course I’m going to slip a few times, but that’s ok. You can always just yell at me and then I’ll go, “OOhhh, that’s right. This person likes their english all nice and proper. How silly of me.” And then I’ll probably slip again, so we’ll have to repeat the process a few times, but such is training.

September 28, 2015 at 12:21 pm #6056Thank you, Daeus. The… hm… hypothetical guy I referenced is generally a pretty laid back, cheerful, happy personality, who likes to joke and tease and make people look at him like he’s crazy. Not that he doesn’t feel grief as keenly as the next person, but he chooses to make light of it because being grumpy about it won’t change anything. When he’s with anyone else he will always be cheerful and optimistic, because he doesn’t like to see other people down in the dumps, but when he’s by himself he’s generally pretty serious.
So thanks for the pointers.
And any other guys who have something to say about this would be welcome…
October 2, 2015 at 11:23 am #6199Thanks for the tips, Daeus. I have anβ¦ ahemβ¦ hypothetical case to present. Just a question, actually. Say a young man (sixteen, almost seventeen) was thrown into command of a tired, demoralized, losing army, while his father (who had been the commander) and his uncle (with whom he is very close) and his sweetheart (enough said) are captives of the enemy, and some of the top commanders in his tired, demoralized, losing army are out to kill him, and he is far from home in a strange land with no way to call for help, and enemies on every sideβ¦ say all that happened, and one day he just sat down and cried. Would that be realistic? He didnβt bawl or anythingβ just sat down very quietly and stared in front of him with tears trickling down his cheeks. What do you think?
I would say that it is very unlikely that he would cry. That sounds more like a female reaction. Men typically don’t express intense emotions or handle difficult situations by crying. However, he may be extra tense, less patient with others, more easily angered, paranoid, etc. But yes, it does depend on the person.

October 2, 2015 at 12:07 pm #6203Thanks Reagan. That’s kind of the way I was leaning, but I wanted to make sure. And you’re right— it would make it clearer what he’s going through if he goes around snapping at people and glaring and being impatient and all that. It fits right in with my… um… hypothetical situation, especially since this character doesn’t usually get angry with people. Or at least if he does, he doesn’t show it! π
Thanks again. That’ll work— I’ll do that.October 2, 2015 at 12:25 pm #6207It’s a pity your character is only hypothetical. He might do well in a story.

October 2, 2015 at 12:31 pm #6210Wow, no, really? I mean, seriously? You really think so? I mean… wow, that’s so coincidental! I mean, I hadn’t even really considered that… the thought never even crossed my mind… π π π

October 4, 2015 at 4:27 am #6233Okay well what about this kind of situation? A young man who has never known a biological father but meets a fatherly figure and grows to love and admire him as his own father. But then the father figure dies suddenly and traumatically, leaving the young man in absolute shock. But then he’s taken away from the scene immediately and not even allowed to stay and mourn his ‘father’s loss. Would he cry at this death and inability to mourn publicly?
October 4, 2015 at 8:04 pm #6239Probably not. He would probably just take it and swallow it.

October 6, 2015 at 4:07 pm #629799% of men don’t want to cry in front of other people. I don’t think he would be upset at not being able to mourn either.

OrpheusAudioAcademy.comOctober 6, 2015 at 8:19 pm #6302Oh, and I’ve also heard it said that while women will dress up for practically anything, men dress up for weddings and funerals and that’s it. π
What do you think?
