Ahaha, same actually. I’m rereading Lotr rn and I’m loving it compared to the last time.

Been reading Father Brown by GK Chesterton and it’s really fun. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t read it. It’s about this kind hearted catholic priest who solves mysteries and then delivers the gospel to the criminals. It’s so great I love it ā˜ŗļø

I think you were the one who was talking about them… maybe I’m wrong. I just finished reading Little Women and the two sequels! šŸ˜ I loved Little Women and Little Men. Jo’s Boys was okay.

Have any of you guys read the Christy Miller series? I’m on book eleven and I have mixed feelings XD

I have friends who’ve read them and they think Todd is the most amazing person ever but I kind of find him… a little cliche

I read the books years ago, and I enjoyed them back then, but that was in middle school, probably six or seven years ago.Ā  A couple months ago I looked into re-reading them but I’m not huge on books that are focused on romance as much as the Christy Miller series is, so I decided it wasn’t worth it to read them again. I’m sort of in the same boat… I enjoyed them years ago but I’ve also grown up a lot since then and my view on relationships in general has changed quite a bit. I guess “mixed feelings” is a good term for what I think of them.

I am an enjoyer of romance and I hope to someday write romances that are based on Christianity but the books were clearly meant to be relatable yet I didn’t relate to Christy at all

I enjoy Robin storytelling and I’m going to continue reading her books but it just feels almost… too stereotyped, like showing what the “perfect Christian” should look like

                  and they’re kind of cheesy

that being said I do find some enjoyable factors and in some book, I can relate to Christy’s struggles, but not as often as all my friends claim too XD

Yeah I know what you mean. Nothing against Robin Jones Gunn, and yes, I enjoyed the books at one time, but I agree that it felt a little stereotyped. I can enjoy a good romance if it’s written well and if it’s part of a larger plot. When it comes to the types of book Robin writes, I think it’s difficult to write something that’s going to be relatable to everyone, because everyone comes from a different background and has different experiences, good and bad. So I think many girls may relate to Christy (and I did at one point, but I was much younger) but others won’t (such as me now, years later, when I’ve had different experiences).

                      Ahhhhh!!!! šŸ˜†šŸ’–

                      *ahem*

So, I love the Christy Miller series. If you couldnā€™t tell. XD

But I can totally understand what yā€™all are saying.

Yeah, Toddā€™s a bit cliche, but I do feel like thereā€™s more to him than what they show in the high school series. His character is explored more in Christy & Todd: The College Years.

As for it being kinda stereotyped, I can see where you get that from. Like Trailblazer said, Robin canā€™t make her character relatable to everyone. I can also see where you think itā€™s a little cheesy. (Umā€¦ I kinda enjoyed that. XD To an extent, of course.) To be honest though, I felt like some parts were pretty original and realistic. But I can see where you thought it was cheesy.

And then you mentioned that she made it look like what a perfect Christian should be like. I disagreeā€¦ sort ofā€¦ XD First, these books were written like 20-30 years ago, so they didnā€™t have social media like we do now. So I think that does play a role in the relatable, cheesiness, factor. Also, Robin canā€™t really include every struggle that teen girls have faced in the books, becauseā€¦ well thatā€™s just impossible. One thing Iā€™ve also noticed is that she tries to keep her books non-denominational. So there are some things she canā€™t write about if she wants to keep it non-denom. But Iā€™m also not 100% sure if thatā€™s what she tries to do, so donā€™t quote me on that. XD

Anyway, I could rant about these books forever.

And I totally respect yā€™allā€™s opinions, (even though I am in love with anything Robin writes XD). No fiction is perfect, and Iā€™m not going to hunt you down if you donā€™t like the books. Iā€™m not that much of a fan. šŸ˜‚ So itā€™s fine if you donā€™t totally agree with me. šŸ˜‰ I just wanted to share my opinion. šŸ™‚

Sorry if I came off as negative

and I totally get that she can’t make them relatable for everyone, I’m very much an old soul and Christy never comes across as one XD So that’s the main reason I don’t relate to her

There are some very enjoyable aspects of the story and truthfully I look exactly like Christy, only my hair is a little bit more blond, more like the color of Christy on the cover of the newer books

I’m excited to read the Sierra Jenson books after I finish the last of the high school years of Christy’s series

So I know I came off as judgemental but truthfully, Robin is the kind of writer I want to be

I realized just how much I enjoy a good romance, the ones where you read them and you have to pause and just smile at cuteness yet they are still realistic and relatable

so in a way I’m kind of finding the aspects I don’t like, so I can write my books differently (not that anything she writes is bad they’re just not my style)

Oh yeah, I totally get that. Thatā€™s the way you should read books as a writer. (Without tearing up every book you read and bashing the writer tho. šŸ˜‚ Even though some books you canā€™t help itā€¦. šŸ˜šŸ˜…šŸ˜‚)

Hey, welcome back! How’s your summer going? Is school out for you yet?

I’ve read the Lunar Chronicles, but it’s been a while! I’ll probably reread them again sometime. What book was your favorite?
