ok, I want to ask this very random question…
I am odd in the fact that I can take a book that bores my friends to death because it’s too longwinded or not well executed in writing, and still enjoy it because I can fill in the problems?
This is great for enjoying a book, but it also can cause problems because now when I read anything, I fill in the problems so automatically I literally don’t notice. It’s probably from reading the WIPs of my friends and also just books in general. It’s with everything in the last year especially. It’s terrible when I’m reading work that people want me to edit and critique because I don’t actually see the problems that everyone else does. It’s now frustrating almost to the point of tears for me with my work (of any length), because unless it’s grammar my mind ‘autocorrects’ it, so-to-speak, and I am oblivious to any troubles with my writing or the writing of others.
long and short I guess I’m asking if I’m odd in doing this XD
if you think it’s worth the bother please tag other people

September 7, 2021 at 12:04 am #104235@elfwingย I don’t know if this is what you’re asking, but I would be up for being a beta reader if you need something critiqued, or just giving you advice ๐
*laughs as one fey*
September 7, 2021 at 12:06 am #104236@calidris haha no it wasn’t the question really, but I will accept it if you want to. I was just wondering if I’m the only person who fills in the holes/problems in books to such an extent I don’t see the problems XD

September 7, 2021 at 12:14 am #104237@elfwing ooh i see.ย I personally don’t have that problem, but there might be someone else who does ๐
It’s only if you want to.ย I don’t want you to feel pressured or anything. It’s something that I’ve been considering recently, just for people in general.ย I have to warn you, though, I might not be able to dedicate a lot of time because of school and everything ๐

September 7, 2021 at 12:21 am #104240@elfwing alright!ย I might be able to help with prose, but I’m not very good at plotting.ย I might be able to critique small sections at a time, and just give you general writing advice ๐

September 7, 2021 at 12:25 am #104241@calidris sounds good! what i mean by plotting is that i need help with whether scenes are too vague and if im getting what i mean to write across
but yeah when you have the time, knock yourself out lol

September 7, 2021 at 7:22 am #104245@elfwing Oh, for me, I’m the opposite. Problems always stick out to me, but usually I stay quiet about them because I feel like they aren’t something that the writer can change easily (like style, the overall plot, etc.) If it’s typos I will though.

If hours don't turn into daysSeptember 7, 2021 at 10:14 am #104246@elfwing Nope… thatโs never happened to me before! XD I have a tendency to slam down my book and yell at it whenever there are problems. XD

I wonder if it’s from reading too many of the language arts stories that totally sucked and lacked any good characters and plots and so I improvised all through my school years because I was bored out of my gourd. I mean, the stories’ purpose was to teach me the English language (it did a good job of that), not story composition XD
or maybe I’m really indifferent and don’t know a good work from a bad one XD

September 8, 2021 at 8:05 am #104259@elfwing I mean, I used to read bad books too lol. And then I started writing, and I didn’t read anything but manga and classics, so when I finally went around to reading other stuff again, I was more like, “what is this thing I’m reading.” I guess writing has trained me to look for mistakes more, and also one of my sister’s hobbies is roasting bad stories, so that might’ve rubbed off on me.

If hours don't turn into daysSeptember 8, 2021 at 9:33 am #104260@elfwing that’s a really good point lol.ย I feel like a lot of the stuff they make you read in school isn’t actually that good.
@elfwingย @devastate-lasting @scripter-of-kingdoms did any of you guys have to read tangerine in school?*laughs as one fey*
