I’m rewriting a fairy tale about Rapunzel and am trying to figure out her hair. I don’t have to have my retelling exactly like the original story, of course, and I fully intend to change some things and add twists of my own. However, I need to figure out something with Rapunzel’s hair, or to stand in for it. It’s unnatural for hair to grow as long as hers, and even if it did, any reasonable girl would cut it. I mean, can you imagine trying to take care of that much hair? So I either need a good reason for her to have long hair and to keep it, or I need to find something else which I could add into the story instead of her long hair, if that makes any sense; perhaps some hair-like reed she weaves rope from or something. Any ideas?

(Oh, and a bit of backstory to give you the setting. This takes place in a fantasy land. The ‘prince’ is her twin brother who she was separated from at birth…the bad guy wanted the firstborn but the mother had twins and gave him the daughter, the second-born, instead. Also, either the brother or the twins together have some sort of power which has to do with singing which probably has to do with finding some sort of weapon which is why the bad guy wants them in them in the first place. Any ideas of how they get this power and what exactly in entails? Oh, and the Fruit of the Spirit theme for this is ‘Joy’.)

INTJ - Inhumane. No-feelings. Terrible. Judgment and doom on everyone.

I’m afraid my ideas for this are very vague and probably not much help, but hopefully they will spark some ideas.

First of all, what if the singing power came from some individual source which was in the course of things to be given to the mother, but the bad guy sought to keep her from obtaining it. He failed however somehow because the mother’s joy foiled his plots.

Now then, what if the singing itself where the replacement for the hair. I’m thinking something like “weaving a tune” could actually have a physical aspect with this special power.

Hm… has your Rapunzel character been shut up in this tower all her life? She might not even know what scissors are. She might think her hair is an absolutely essential part of her— maybe she thinks cutting it off would kill her. (Thank goodness that’s not true 😛 )
And I don’t imagine she has much else to do in that tower, so taking care of her hair probably wouldn’t be that big of a deal for her.
You might even tie her fear of cutting her hair in with the theme… maybe showing how joy can set us free from fear.

Yes, I’m rambling. Feel free to ignore me. 😉

Oh, and I really, really like @Daeus’s idea about ‘weaving a tune’. That could really go somewhere.

Perhaps you could make her hair a more realistic length, but still have if long…waist or knee length. That’s definitely realistic and hair is quite pretty at that length. If you wanted to change the story up a bit, you could give her a hair color that wasn’t blonde. 🙂

You know, I don’t know if Rapunzel (I’m going to change her name, I think) has been locked in a tower her whole life. I might just have her have long gold hair that reaches her knees or something when braided…

Also, I’m thinking about introducing some fantasy characters. What do you all think about these cute things: 🙂

Looking up winged cats, I came across this. It’s a bit off topic (though maybe I could name the cat/griffin Rapunzel and work that in…) but this was too cute to not post.

That is totally adorable. Sure, go for it! And name it Rapunzel. That would be so cute. 🙂

What if her hair has some sort of power? Whoops. Taken. Flower, gleam, and grow… But anyway…

What if she braids it to be super awesome? And can hide weapons in the braids?

Weapons in the braids! That’s cool. I don’t think it will fit in this story, but there’s a sifi Rapunzel I’m thinking about and that would be perfect for that. 😉
