        A side note:

The official name of Project C’s world, or planet, is Baztet.

Besides Baztet, there are other planets – the rebellious stars – but I’m still sorting out all of their names. I want them to have a similar vibe, and in this, a weakness of mine is revealed. I take forever choosing the right names…

Ack, yup I get that. Can’t wait to hear about the new and improved Thorn!

And honestly, what is up with loving sweet cinnamon sidekicks more than the hero? It’s such a mood.

          This is SO true, XD

I rolled the log over and underneath was a tiny little stick and I was like, "That log had a child

Aaand here is the new side character! I invented him this morning!! He is a huge motivation for Thorn early on in the story. Such a sweetie 😍

            Name: Ransom

Age: Seven or eight, but looks closer to ten

House: Formerly Chrysanthemum, but switching to Dandelion (the unofficial House for all those of old age, since they all begin to look the same)

Appearance: Ransom is a bony boy with tawny brown hair, tufted with dandelion fluff around the ears and neck. This fluff has been growing thicker over time, and is a sign of old age. Thorn forces him to wear spectacles over his orange-and-white speckled eyes, since he is constantly losing his balance, dangling over ledges or cliffs. This is in contrast to Thorn’s graceful movement. Ransom wears red, orange, and buttery yellow.

Personality: Ransom loves, just as Thorn does, the raw feeling of living. Sight, smell, taste, touch and sound are all sources of delight to him, and he basks in the simple glory of inspecting the letters in the mailbox, or throwing tea parties.

He can be a little hard to control when he sets his eyes on something – for example, if he wants a tea cake, and Thorn is ignoring him, he will jump up and down, singing of his uncontrollable hunger, until she gets the idea.

Most of the time, however, he is quiet and solemn, sitting in an armchair, with his chin tucked into his chest, eyes turned white – as if he were an old man. When he is in this state, his body turns fragile, like a dried leaf, and Thorn has to help him wake up again.

He is melancholy often, and forgets things easily.

Thanks girlie! (At least I’m assuming you’re a girl… XD my bad if not)

Not ExAcTLy, like, it doesn’t affect him, it only affects Thorn really. In fact, he will literally never remember, so he is as bouncy as a butterfly, FOREVER.

Good. I was going to have to think up a way to gain legal custody of your character…

@godlyfantasy12 (You asked for more details on this… 😉 )

I wrote all this in like, two sittings, so yeah. I enjoyed it. It’s still a work in progress, though, so keep that in mind.

                      Dogchildren

Inspiration: The story of Abraham’s fatherhood.

Theme song: Wolves of the Revolution by The Arcadian Wild

The Dogchildren are the enslaved people of Baztet. Since ancient times, they have silently served the humans, with almost no complaint or violence. Even when defending themselves, they refuse to harm their masters.

The legend goes that they were deemed unworthy by a vague deity to be considered human, and were banished a tier below humankind, to serve the other species forever. The legend also states the Dogchildren may have a chance to join humankind. A variation says they were originally human, and committed a grievous sin – but the facts remain to be straightened.

The legend goes on to say that one Dogchild will become their first prince, and be known as the first mark of rebellion and judgment on all humankind – a true Wolfchild, perhaps.

They are the perfect victims, either emotionally through their masters and mistresses, or for mass murder through the Synod.

In modern times, they are either sold as slaves in the less civilized areas, or forced into servanthood in high society (as butlers, maids, footmen), or, rarely, have their own rights as owners of small establishments.

They can look astonishingly different from dog to dog, but all have dog-like attributes. In order of recurrence:

                      • Fur around neck or ears. Some Dogchildren can hide themselves as humans in this way, but are almost always found out. These are most likely to be abused in some way, because of their being discovered in plain sight. Sometimes the fur only grows in years after the child is born, leading to a lot of drama.
                      • Complete head of a dog. Dogchildren at this stage have a muzzle with long teeth, and fur completely covering their head and shoulders. This is the most common variety. Still human-like, and are sometimes treated as part of their aristocrat’s family.
                        – Atlas’ family, including Dogchild, fall into this category, except for Orca.
                      • Tail. Useful for balancing, or showing off in high society if beautiful. Some aristocrats collect these, like mice.
                      • Dog-like hind legs. The tail is often accompanied by this. These are the most fast and strong of the Dogchildren, and are of a higher value. Participate in athletic challenges (think gymnastics), and are sometimes sent out to hunt down criminals. Lean more towards violence than any other variety, but only when commanded to do so.
                      • Almost completely dog. These are unfortunately the first to die, since their inner workings (of dog and of human) clash and stall, and eventually sputter out. They still have a higher intelligence than ordinary animals, but aren’t treated much better. Used for pulling carriages or riding. On all fours. They cannot talk. Can be valuable to aristocrats, the more beautiful the fur is (think Afghan hound).
                        – A subset of this type is the ferry’s hound. These are giant-size dogs, practically machines, which paddle boats across the sea. Once tied to a schedule, they will swim on, unable to be stopped unless killed. Virtually no intelligence, but have a soul. Similar to a greyhound, they have disturbingly long features, like a spider, and their legs are so long, they are as tall as skyscrapers and can occasionally touch the seabed. Out of water, they will collapse. Bones of these creatures often wash up on shore.

Some important events or subcultures in history:

                      • A major event in history, and a constant source of sorrow for the Dogchildren, was the search for the Ashen Cradle a few decades prior. This landmark, hallowed in history books, was rumored to be filled with all manner of dead wonders, and overrun with the most exquisite ancient flowers – those with the power to make one’s family immortal, or at least rich for centuries. The trail to this Cradle went through snow drifts of ash and ice, and was a torturous ordeal for the dogs who pulled the adventuring sleds. These dogs were captured from their warm homes in the city, and forced to go shirtless and shoeless, often left to freeze, alone, out in the wilderness. They had no experience in the snow, because of their aristocratic upbringing. (The search died down years later, but is still passively ongoing.)
                      • To this day, there are rumors of Dogchildren still living, as masses of ice and flesh, in the burning mountains. They have turned to wild, animalistic ways. These are to become the first disciples of the Wolfchild. Shocked travelers still find tiny frozen pups among the ash. One pup found was reported to still have a heartbeat.
                      • The rise of popularity in owning dogservants has grown in the aristocratic societies. Dogchildren are now forced to behave in shamefully ridiculous ways, wearing feathers and baubles, and performing stunts in front of their masters. This has dampened many hopes of freedom and love, and dogservants often fall into depression, their fur losing shine, and their interests fading away into dull oblivion. They are then deemed ‘boring,’ and gotten rid of.

                      Bits and Pieces of Culture:

                      • Wearing a Dogchild’s fur as an accessory is incredibly taboo.
                      • Dogchildren need a lot of water, which they drink from wide, wooden bowls. They are actually quite controlled and clean while drinking – barely spilling a drop. They wash their hands from the same bowl.
                      • Dogchildren are never scholars.
                      • They can write, but they do not understand drawing. Illustrations of beings with spirits are unheard of to them, and instead, they create patterns and knots in wood or stone. They believe in making things beautiful, but not making something for the sake of beauty itself.
                      • They are very likely to be colorblind.
                      • They have pale, colorless schemes, as if bleached and sanded. Colors include white, gray, light brown, and honey.
                      • Smell and touch are a huge part of their social interactions; see Traditions.
                      • Their smell, especially, ties them to all strings of the world. Without smell, a dogchild would be looked at with pity by its own species.
                      • Their clothes are always clean and modern – wearing suits, ties, and spotless white accessories. The only time they wear older clothes is when interacting with their own families in relative solitude – for example, Bright might wear only scratchy canvas strips over her chest and around her waist while at home, but she is forced to wear iron-pressed white uniforms out in the human world. It’s a strange mix of modern and ancient.
                      • Their vocabulary and pronunciation are flawless. They speak like controlled, well-educated richlings, and hold themselves as richlings as well.
                      • Extremely graceful in everything they do.
                      • They are surprisingly good at badminton.
                      • They are deathly allergic to chocolate.
                      • Rarely, a dogchild will be born with two faces on the sides of its head. These Two-Faces disappear soon after birth.

                      Some traditions:

                      • Dogchildren never reveal their true names to humans. They go by nicknames (Dove, Saltie, Lir, etc.), but keep their own names to themselves, afraid of losing a deeply knit power. At death, they may whisper their name out, but rarely does anyone hear it.
                      • When near to death, they are sent to a Synod processing department, where they disappear from their loved ones’ lives. Occasionally a dogchild will get permission to be taken care of quietly by his own family.
                      • A male and female must get permission from their masters to be wed.
                      • A pup must be tied carefully into its family, by means of various methods. The pup needs constant exposure to its father and mother’s smell and touch. A common method is to baptize it in the sea, and let each family member nuzzle its chest and breathe Essence into the little one’s body.
                      • A strange tradition all Dogservants have is to drop everything they are doing – every last one of them on the planet – and disappear for mere moments. They then flicker back into existence, and resume their work, saying nothing, even when threatened. Some are beaten soundly every time they reappear, but they continue steadfastly nonetheless.

They have a deeper connection to the Child – and to Essence, but prefer not to manipulate it. They believe in a greater power, and are unified in a tight-knit family of their own – if quiet and private. Easily compared to the Church.

No human would ever admit it. But the Dogchildren are the beating heart of society – and without them, everything would fall apart at the seams.
