@theshadow got some hybrid info for you!
- Hybrids of human/anything else usually look like whatever species the non-human parent was, but often with something small missing. Or, conversely, they can be like humans with a few subtle clues of their other parent’s species. Example: Huntress and Scout. Huntress is effectively a full Changeling, but she lacks the catlike pupils of their eyes, indicating she’s a hybrid. Conversely, Scout appears pretty much completely human, but take a look inside his mouth and you’ll realize he has a Changeling’s forked tongue (literally, not necessarily figurative lol), and a black light would reveal the near-imperceptible striping on his skin that matches his sister’s more obvious but still extremely faint pattern.
- Changeling hybrids sometimes retain their camouflage abilities, sometimes don’t. Other than that, since they’re so much like humans, a Changeling hybrid who didn’t get the camo gene is basically in the same situation as if they were half human instead. Example: Huntress and Scout again.
- Drachenheul hybrids may or may not have wings. The wings and tail are kind of a package deal, so it’s basically impossible to have a Drachenheul hybrid with wings but no tail, or the other way around. Example: Soldier’s wizard roommate from the short tie-in comics (not the series I’m using for my fanfic, but still canon). He’s an Ornithiform/Drachenheul hybrid and is basically just a big bat.
- Ornithiform hybrids can sometimes have wings and no tail or vice versa, but that’s extremely rare. Feathers are, oddly enough, dominant over scales and co-dominant with fur, which means even a wingless Ornithiform hybrid still has an obvious badge of their lineage. Sometimes their bones develop more like those of their other species than those of their birdlike parent, meaning they won’t be able to fly. This also happens to Drachenheul hybrids sometimes. Example: Soldier and Zhanna’s theoretical children. They would be Ornithiform/Arcturan hybrids and would likely be varying mixes of their parents’ kinds.
- Suilean hybrids often have an advantage over their full-blooded parents. Remember the reason why Demo’s so dizzy even when he hasn’t been…erm…into something? That doesn’t apply to the vast majority of Suilean hybrids. They don’t often keep the wings of their parent unless their other parent also has wings, but retain the beautifully colored shell-like scales on their bodies and hexagonal irises and pupils. Example: Actually, I don’t have any Suilean hybrids, but I briefly considered creating one a while back ago.
- Salamandrion hybrids are extremely rare. The other species mostly can’t survive on Coreworld–the lava-covered home planet of the salamander-like race–and in turn, Salamandrion can’t survive without protective gear on other planets. But from what we know, they retain their affinity to fire, even if they lose their fireproof abilities. Example: The Classic Team’s Pyro. Half-human, she can remove her helmet and presumably her suit, and wear normal clothes without freezing and dying.
- Arcturan hybrids often keep their fur and their strength. An Arcturan hybrid might only be distinguished from their full-blood kin by the fact that they have wings, feathers or a tail. Or they may just be an exceptionally strong version of whatever their other parent’s species is, with a little bit of extra fur (often around their shoulders and backs) Example: Again, Soldier and Zhanna’s eventual children.
- Argonite hybrids are interesting, because there are two breeds–the shark-like and crocodile-like kinds. (Both are considered one species, because children from a shark Argonite/croc Argonite pairing are always either sharks or crocs, never something in between.) Scales seem to be recessive to fur and feathers, but a hybrid who’s half Argonite and half human, Suilean, Salamandrion, Sunekite or Changeling will still have them. Almost all Argonite hybrids have tails, and whether it’s a shark’s tail or a croc’s depends on their parent’s type. Their scales, if they have them, are often unusual colors that reflect the other half of their parentage. Example: Sniper and Huntress’s hypothetical children. I have one of these created so far–her name’s Alyx (something of a joke reference to another game created by the crew behind Team Fortress, where the main character had that name), and she looks like an Argonite, although her scales are several different colors and can brighten or darken depending on her mood, but not disappear completely.
- Ailurid hybrids often keep their catlike ears. Their paws are more like a human’s feet than a Drachenheul’s, Argonite’s or Salamandrion’s claws, and this doesn’t often carry over to hybrids from those species. Crossing them with the other furred species often simply introduces new fur patterns or colors. Example: While I don’t have any place to add such a character, I did have an idea for an Argonite/Ailurid hybrid who has a crocodile-like tail and claws, but also cat ears and short fur.
- There are a few other species but I haven’t developed them much, so I don’t have as much info on them yet.
Thank you for listening to my rant lol
Where'd I get ya this time? The liver? The kidney? I'm runnin' outta places to put holes in ya.
October 22, 2024 at 8:01 pm #188114Woah, that’s really cool lore! I like it a lot, it’s really creative. Where did you get these ideas?

This one’s especially interesting, the basis off of Salamanders is neat. Are these based off of the ones (name is escaping me) that can live near volcanoes?

October 22, 2024 at 8:11 pm #188116@theshadow to be completely honest I don’t know where most of my ideas come from. I just make them up one day and run with it. TF2’s crazy lore means anything goes, unlike most fandoms where you kinda have to stick to a few rules about worldbuilding, so I can run wild with this stuff.
and lol I actually wasn’t aware there was a real salamander species that can live near volcanoes! You learn something new every day, haha

Nice!

Lol.
Also I’m not even going to try responding to the other thing on the thread, it was very painful on the phone. I was going to delete that part and I thought I did, the way the conversation showed up was weird, half the text was gone.

October 24, 2024 at 3:05 pm #188220thank you for posting and thus distracting me from wasting time on random TF2 art blogs and gawking at how cool other people’s tenth class ideas arebut yeah, anyway. I recently decided having ten classes kinda throws off the divisible by three thing the original nine had, so I was like “WELP, TIME TO MAKE TWO MORE FANCLASSES” lol
I haven’t redrafted the story to add them in yet and might not. I’ll decide when I decide. lol.

October 30, 2024 at 1:47 pm #188606@the_lost-journal here’s the creature forum! You can read through it if you want and see some other people’s creatures, and then post your own if you’d like!

October 30, 2024 at 2:58 pm #188613Oh wow, this is so cool! Danke! (Sorry, my German kicked in there!)

and I don’t mind the German. It’s quite cool.
