Do you mostly write science fiction?
I would say I write mostly fantasy, not sci-fi, although I do like sci-fi too. This actually more of a fantasy idea than a sci-fi one, because although there are multiple planets, the technology present on them won’t be particularly advanced. Essentially, it’s a bunch of fantasy worlds in a shared universe, but without much interaction.
(I don’t think I read about the Cosmere, is that Mistborn or something else?)
The Cosmere is Brandon Sanderson’s fantasy universe. Mistborn takes place on one of the planets in it. You wouldn’t have read about the Cosmere, because it isn’t directly mentioned in most of his works. He intentionally made it so that you could read any of his books without knowing about the larger universe.
I really like the worldbuilding here and I’d be interested to hear more!
Thanks! I don’t have many solid details down for most of this, but I might share more some time.

Ah XD I guess that makes a lot of sense.
Yep! Yeah, ikr, I’m a hard pantser so I usually have barely any details, if any. Sounds good!

It’s actually one of a few, though it’s his main universe. He does make major allusions to other series within the Cosmere, but it still isn’t vital information if one just wants to read without thinking about it, until recently though. In his own words, he’s taking his gloves off, starting with Wax and Wayne 4, Lost Metal, which you need background primarily from Elantris and Stormlight. I’ve also been reading his secret projects, Tress is somewhat stand alone, but I’ve been waiting to finish Oathbringer to have enough Cosmere background to start reading Yumi.

Will I be completely lost if I read that one before Elantris?? I’ve read the other 3 Wax and Wayne books and will probably be reading the 4th soon… should I read Elantris first??

September 4, 2023 at 12:34 pm #155513Yeah, I know not all of his stuff is in the Cosmere, but I think it’s the only universe that contains multiple other series. It has Mistborn, Stormlight, Warbreaker, Elantris, White Sands, and a few minor works, I believe, whereas his other universes each contain only one series. There’s the Rithmatist and his Cytoverse series, but I believe those universes only contain their respective series right?

Huh. I thought that he wasn’t going to require outside information until Mistborn era 4 and Dragonsteel.

📚 Appreciator of BooksSeptember 4, 2023 at 12:38 pm #155515At least that’s what is recommended, yes. That’s what I’m planning to do. I’m assuming you should still be able to read it and understand the story somewhat, but it’s hard to know with Sanderson. If you finished Stormlight though, all you need is just the book Elantris and the Novella that comes after it, so that’s just a book and a half in the way basically. It’s also suggested that you read White Sands, a graphic novel, but it’s not as necessary.

September 4, 2023 at 12:42 pm #155518Yeah, then there’s Reckoners, Alcatraz, and Frugal Wizard, which there’s something that actually suggests the latter two could be within a multiverse, though it’s likely just an Easter egg. It could be rationalized that a few of them could be in a multiverse because of Frugal specifically.

September 4, 2023 at 12:46 pm #155521I’m probably going to read Elantris. White Sands, though… graphic novels aren’t really my thing.
