I mentioned this in another thread, but I decided to write a full description for anyone who’s interested.
I call this universe “Celestiar” (I don’t care much for the name, but it’s alright.)
It’s basically a mix of Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere and Tolkien’s mythology for Middle Earth.
Like Tolkien’s mythology, the universe was created by God, the same God as our universe. Also like Tolkien, there are “gods” who are essentially just angels, servants of God. These share some similarities with the shardholders in the Cosmere, although they are morally perfect angelic beings, rather than super powerful humans.
The background is essentially that there was originally one planet, which all twelve gods protected. Like In Tolkien’s mythology, one of the gods fell, becoming a demonic force: Malgrium. Malgrium was later replaced by a new god, keeping the number at twelve. Malgrium caused humanity to fall and waged war against the other gods. Eventually the twelve good gods decided to abandon the planet and split up the remainder of humanity, taking them to twelve separate planets. Each god became the guardian of one planet. Malgrium continued to try to take over and destroy everything and is the mastermind behind many of the events that happen on the planets.

I like it! So this is within a multiverse of sorts with our universe? Is earth perhaps one of the 12 planets, or is this a different reality completely that God created? Are you going to express the need of a Savior, since this is the same loving Heavenly Father?

Malgrium’s name feels to reminiscent of Melcore and Morgoth to me. Though I recognize that your just using the prefix ‘mal’ basically meaning bad, so I’ll role with it, and it’s up to you anyway.

@thearcaneaxiom I wouldn’t call it a multiverse, because it is all contained in one universe, but no, Earth won’t be in it. It’s more of a “replacement” of the universe that actually exists. As for the theological aspects, I’m probably going to do something similar to what Tolkien did, in that, while it will be clear the God exists in this universe, I won’t just put Christianity straight into the universe. It will be implied that everything closely parallels Christianity, but I’m just going to be careful to avoid making theology “annoying.” You know what can happen when Christian writers are too blatant. That said, this is a Christian universe, so that will still be very much important to the theme of everything. Probably my least favorite thing about the Cosmere is that Brandon Sanderson just implies that there’s life after death and leaves it at that. When I think about it, it becomes depressing.

As for Malgrium, I think it sounds cool, but I agree that it might be a bit similar to other names. Using the prefix ‘mail’ should be fine, but idk I might change it, might not.

That’s fair. It’s true that you don’t want to become preachy about things, but I’m just thinking that if this really is the same God we worship, then that would mean that the same principles of the fall and atonement would be present. Perhaps it could take a completely different form than that, but it could still be there. It could also be thought of as the atonement was already done on earth, and applies everywhere else? I could also simply be misinterpreting your notion of it being the same God as simply being virtually identical to God, just manifesting in a different reality, and different laws are present, though similar principles.

Why does that bother you? Do you want Sanderson to go into more detail? I assume he actually intends to eventually. If not though, I would say it’s for good reason. Afterlife is a very delicate subject to put it the least, and Sanderson wants the characters to feel the same way many people here do, we don’t know. Of course we know that the Spiritual Realm exists, but what it’s like, he doesn’t want to say anything yet. I agree with the desire to know more about the Spiritual realm though 100%.

The principles of fall and atonement do apply to this universe, but I’m not sure how much it will be talked about in stories, because they are so important that I’m not sure if I could without being preachy.

Brandon Sanderson said that he isn’t going to talk about the afterlife in the Cosmere, though he’s implied that there is one. To me, it just seems that it’s kind of an important topic that he’s been ignoring. (Going into basic Cosmere lore. This might not make sense if you’ve only read the books) Adonalsium cannot actually be God, because it was destroyed. So I ask, is there an actual God who is superior to that? Or are the most powerful beings now these shardholders, who are fallible, and some evil? That just seems depressing, and to me it sounds like Sanderson isn’t going to answer these questions. I still enjoy the Cosmere if I ignore these things, but basically I want my universe to clearly be ruled by a God like ours.

                        @jonas

That works for me. They don’t need to be talked about, but I just wanted to know if they were present.

That makes sense. If that’s what he said, then that’s how it will go I guess. I agree on the point that it could even come off as almost nihilistic with Adonalsium dying (I do know the basics btw, though I try to avoid spoilers). Adonalsium himself is only spoken as the being that predated everything else, and nothing else is really known of him in terms of true deity and origin. Sanderson intentionally explores the subject, even directly, like with Dalinar. Whether or not he knows the answers, he probably doesn’t want to say things are one way or another, again for the characters, but I definitely see what you mean.

With the Cosmere, it would actually be kind of weird if there wasn’t a God, given that several characters wonder it. Dalinar’s for one, and also Sazed (idk if you’ve read Mistborn.) It would be strange if the answer was “Nope! Sorry, guys, you’re on your own.”

Yeah, I mean, if nothing else, Sanderson himself is their god. He’s joked about how writing can be about playing god before. He does himself have his own beliefs he subscribes to, that of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, a religion he and I actually share, so it would be odd if he subjected his characters to a cruel reality that he himself doesn’t believe in.

Idk where you were originally sharing about this but what’s the summary of the story/plot?

I rolled the log over and underneath was a tiny little stick and I was like, "That log had a child

                                Thanks!

As far as a plot summary, I don’t have much in the way of that yet. Basically my plan is that there will be stories set on each of the planets, which will only have loose connections to one another. Eventually, I’ll have a storyline that brings in threads from the previous stories, culminating in some sort of climactic showdown. Like I said I don’t have many details, because this idea is fairly new. (Although some elements have been around for a long time.) I did share some magic systems that will/might be on some of the planets in the universe. That would be in the “Magic Systems!!” Thread under the General Writing section if you’re interested. (I can tag you there if you can’t find it.) I do have a general outline for the story taking place on one of the planets, which I might share some time soon. If I do I’ll tag you.

No problem! It looks really cool! I haven’t read much of Tolkien, and only a few of Brandon Sanderson’s books (I don’t think I read about the Cosmere, is that Mistborn or something else?) but anyway, I really like the worldbuilding here and I’d be interested to hear more! Do you mostly write science fiction?
