      I'm 'a homeschooler' because cookie-making writing artistic animal-whisperer isn't a job title

It takes a lot of work (I’ve spent probably more than 10 hours and am still not finished). I recommend that you draw out the general outline of your map (Mountains, Lands, Water, ect. but not woods) with pencils. Then scan it into a computer and work on the finer details (I use Paint 3D since I like being able to get down to the individual pixel). By doing this you can edit anything if you decide later to move it. I mentioned not drawing woods because it takes forever!!! Instead draw only a small patch of woods and copy it over and over again, moving different parts here and there to make it look random. (Unless you really want to spend hours drawing ever single tree like my sisters.) Elfwing also made a good point. Look at maps from other stories and see how they did trees and mountains.
