Another reason I would have to give Dynamism that limitation is that they could use it to effortlessly reverse an object’s direction. If someone threw a rock at them, they could just touch the rock as it is flying towards them, absorb the kinetic energy, and infuse it in the other direction. If it had to be the same direction, they could still stop it, but they couldn’t send it back.

Here is an image of the table for the Resonance in my magic system (Hopefully it comes through right. I haven’t used images before.)

At first, I didn’t have several of these Resonances, and I had one that I no longer have, which let you change an object’s material. Then I realized that I could fit all of them into this grid, filled in the empty slots and got rid of that extra one. Dynamism takes up three slots, because there wasn’t a good way to separate that into three abilities.

It appears that it did not go through. I’ll try again.

Wow, that is a very interesting system. I think I get it, but that might be the most technical magic system I’ve ever seen. I like how it seems that you’re basically inventing your own science for your world.

Thanks! That is basically the idea, all conventional physics I threw out the window, not to be replaced by absurdity, but simply an alternative standard model and upwards. Yours is technical too though, and well organized!

What I’m wondering is, if people stopped speaking the Silence because everybody could overhear them, why did that mean they had to stop using Lanusel? And even if they started using regular speech to communicate, why would they give up Lanusel entirely if it was so powerful?

Great question! The Silence and Lanusel are independent of one another, however, when people began using verbal speech to comunicate, the only prior context they had of verbal speech was Lanusel… and maybe the Shal’le, but ignore that for now. They basically started using similar words to ones in Lanusel, but tweaked a little here and there so that it didn’t do anything they didn’t mean to. Eventually this evolves into various proto-Lanusel dialects. The issue was trying to preserve this in each generation. Each generation of youth had to be taught these two similar sounding systems. While drift would occur over time, this was still a problem, and the differences between proto-Lanusel and true Lanusel continued to become more muddled. Unintended harm could occur from a mispronunciation, encouraging drift, but because both languages were becoming increasingly blurred, drift happened to true Lanusel as well, making it no longer effective. This could have been corrected, but each generation could find more clever and more novel ways in their eyes to get around, so why bother? It was simply an point of time where the idea of gravity manipulation was more for the use of travel, and nothing else, and it faded over time, never a point of straight forsaking. I hope that makes sense. We also know in our world there were many incredible ancient techniques people could use to do crazy stuff way back in when, but that has now been lost to time, despite them being so powerful.

you used the word ‘Savant.’ I’ve only heard that word used in Mistborn, so I assumed it was a made-up word, but it isn’t being underlined in red when I type it, so I guess it’s real. What does it mean in real life?

Yeah, it’s a real word. It basically means someone who is talented far beyond what is considered normal in some particular thing. So in the context of Mistborn for example, Spook became a Tin Savant because he was no longer a regular Tineye, becoming far more talented and capable than what was considered normal.

He is perfect in Justice, yet He is perfect in Mercy, even when we fail Him. For this, He is good.

Huh. Isn’t working. I’ll try to represent it in text lol.
                Combination | Separation | Absorption/Dispensation | Distortion
                Spirits | Connection | Consciousness |               Empathy                         | Temporality
                Objects | Fusion        | Destruction      |     Recollection                             | Presence
                Forces |                  Dynamism                                                                         | Space

This probably won’t look right on some devices, but it’s the best I can do.

With Dynamism, it will either be the same direction as the original object or the direction of the user’s choice. My decision will probably be based on balance. I would say Dynamism is probably the most powerful ability, so it might make sense to give it that limitation.

That makes sense, I would lean towards the limitation as well. It makes sense, and, well, puts a limit.

I am actually unfamiliar with Avatar. They have a crossover in a video game I play, but I know next to nothing about it.

I know you like Sanderson, so I also know you’ll like Avatar. Avatar the Last Airbender I can honestly say is the very best show I’ve ever seen. It is enjoyable for all ages, but the depth of storytelling and character development incredible, even when compared to books. I highly recommend! If you can ever get your hands on it, it will be worth it!

And lastly, yes, I do have a Cosmere-like universe planned. Only one of the planets has any development beyond its magic system right now. I might make a post on it sometime.

Nice! Yeah, that’s what me and my sister are doing. I would love to hear anything about it whenever your willing to talk about it!

Great point! That’s the fun part of hard magic systems, thinking about the potential things you can and can’t do, and being forced into needing to think of clever solutions!

Huh. Isn’t working. I’ll try to represent it in text lol.

Hmmm, there’s actually quite a few places. You can go through the General Writing Discussions page, and look through the most active forums, like the Place to Share… is one, but I would probably make my own on General Writing Discussions, then tag whoever you are most interested in for opinions.

Random question: How do you feel about conlangs?

I would love to be able to create an entire language, but I don’t have the skills or knowledge. I am impressed by authors who make their own languages, but I don’ think I would want to spend the time doing it.

Although Critiques is also a good one to go on for particularly, well, critiquing your writing.

A conlang is a Constructed Language. A language that is made by one or a few people for some purpose. Tolkien popularized conlanging for things like fantasy.
