My mom said…
I like that
Lucille
“Hm.”
There was a time last spring when a tiger was brought into a local show. It was treated better than Lucy had read about animal shows in science articles, but she still remembered the cat padding back and forth in the cage. Maybe if it was let out where it belonged, it would never attack anybody.
“I think we should stop hurting other kids if we can,” Lucy conceded. “But your mom is smart.”

February 10, 2026 at 12:38 am #210667Can you imagine if he has a daughter? Lol, she’d be so spoiled just because he wouldn’t be able to resist her. I have considered giving him an adopted daughter in his story…I kinda want to do it now just for the chaos lol.
I know, I’m late. Apology pic from Pinterest:

Gabriel Mai
Gabriel softly smiled under his mask, even though inside his heart was clenched in a fist.
“I wish I had siblings. I wish I had more friends I could trust. Instead everyday I would go out and sacrifice sleep and health to protect people who would kill me if they saw my Devil Marks.” Gabriel looked at the splotchy skin on his hands, tired. “Sometimes I don’t even know why I do it anymore. With Lucy, I have more than thrill to keep me going. For once I can care, and let her see me as I am. I know eventually we’ll have to part, her to her real home, and I back to my cursed world, but for a moment, this feels like heaven among all the fog.”

Mel nodded slowly. She reached for her tea and gulped down the rest of it. It was sweet, but still not warm. She was getting full, so, copying what she had seen earlier, she began wrapping up her favorite treats into napkins and putting them in her pockets.
A large shadow passed over the tree stump table and across the surrounding grass. Mel froze and looked up. A giant black bird was flying high above. It moved on, disappearing into the clouds, but a couple more followed behind, each dropping the tea party into shadow as they passed. Mel shivered. They were huge.
“Are those the crows that tried to eat you before?” She asked in a low voice.

Lol. They could have a mentor-apprentice thing going, like Barnes and Seb. I can imagine Gabriel training a kid to be the next Protector but barely letting the kid do anything because he doesn’t want them to get hurt.
but for a moment, this feels like heaven among all the fog.
It’s kind of sad he’s impacted by her this much. Says a lot about the fact that he doesn’t have a lot of loved ones who know enough about him to support him.

“Mm-hm.” Lucy watched the crows with mild fascination. The birds still seemed pretty, in a blustering, frightening sort of way. “I won’t let ’em snatch you. Don’t worry.”

“Cool,” Mel said, still in a low whisper. “I wanna ride one.”

Huntress
“I wish I had siblings. I wish I had more friends I could trust. Instead everyday I would go out and sacrifice sleep and health to protect people who would kill me if they saw my Devil Marks.” Gabriel sounded tired. “Sometimes I don’t even know why I do it anymore. I know eventually we’ll have to part, her to her real home, and I back to my cursed world, but for a moment, this feels like heaven among all the fog.”
Huh. He’d mentioned the “devil marks” again.
He couldn’t possibly be a human-Changeling hybrid if our species didn’t exist in his world, so what was he, if not a human?
“Heaven among the fog….” I repeated. “Interesting way to look at it.”
Sniper suddenly lashed out with one hand and pinned something to the floor nearby. Gabriel and I looked over, slightly confused at the quick movement.
He held up a small snakelike creature, the animal wriggling angrily. “This little bugger was slitherin’ close to the fire and looked like he wanted to strike at me when I went to grab the fire poker.” He inspected it but then tossed it toward the lake. “He’s not worth killin’, I’ll let him live. What’s our plan? Cross the lake now, or rest ‘ere for the night?”

Gabriel Mai
Gabriel looked up. He felt tired, tempted to lie down on the spot and go to sleep. He looked over to where the water surface barely glistened in the fog.
“I saw you struggling earlier with something in the water, and even with the raft, I don’t trust crossing in the fog at night.” He stood, wobbly on his feet at first, hoping they hadn’t noticed. He glanced around him. “We can’t see far right now, making searching basically worthless. So we stay the night, but we should set up watches.” He almost volunteered to go first, since he couldn’t imagine telling another person to do it instead of him, yet he didn’t want to stay up, he wanted sleep. He sat back down, hoping someone else would take charge. He never thought of himself as a leader.

“Maybe we can,” Lucy said, her voice lilting as the thought occurred to her. She narrowed her eyes and watched the shadows vanish over the thick, gray horizon.

“We can’t see far right now, making searching basically worthless. So we stay the night, but we should set up watches.” Gabriel told us.
I nodded. “Good idea.”
I made a mental note of the time since the sun went down. This planet’s time was a lot different than mine’s, but if it rotated like a normal world its day and its night would be roughly the same. Which meant all four of us ‘ad time to take a few hours’ worth of a watch, slightly longer than the standard.
“I’ll take the first one.” Huntress offered. “You two look tired. Maybe get some sleep.”
”I’ll be fine.” I claimed, although I knew I probably needed some time to rest.
Soldier was already asleep, his wings folded around his body. Lucky him, he ‘ad a built-in blanket in case of the temperature droppin’.
I, sadly, did not ‘ave anythin’ like that, so I found myself a sheltered spot and hoped it’d be enough.

He was relieved when Huntress volunteered.
“Wake me up in a few hours if I’m not up already,” He told her, before settling near the fire, using the crook of his arm as a pillow. He loosened his mask, before fully taking it off, realizing there was no point hiding his face when they had seen it already. He intertwined the red ribbon with his fingers, then fell asleep. The petal birthmarks on his jaw were clearly visible against his pale skin.
We can skip forward now, or we can have Huntress thoughts then skip.

(PS. Pfp by SelkieSeal on Unvale. My dear Chase ❤️?)February 11, 2026 at 9:50 am #210695I didn’t realize it’s evening for the other characters. Should the girls find a place to sleep or is the mist messing with the other group’s heads so they think it’s nighttime?

February 11, 2026 at 10:27 am #210699like the lake is THAT big, or whatever “planet” surface they’re on has an unusual day-night cycle, probably both.
Forgive me for trying to science the magic lol. it’s fun to do that.

February 11, 2026 at 11:47 am #210700@whalekeeper Idk how the sun works, but here’s what I started writing yesterday
Mel
The sun was starting to set, but Mel didn’t want the day to be over yet. She had slept a while in the sunshine by the pond, and she still felt plenty rested. The shadows stretched across the grassy clearing, reaching for the two girls.
Mel still watched the sky. The crows were gone now, but it was clear which direction they were headed.
“Can we follow them?”
