Mel
“Yeah. They’re good.” Mel pushed the tray towards her. She wrinkled her nose at the remaining cucumber sandwich and pushed that back towards her too. She pointed across the table. “Can you pass some of that orange jelly?”
“It’s marmalade.”
“Who?”
Lucy passed the jar over. Mel spread some of the stuff on a cracker and tried it. Her brow furrowed in thought as she chewed.
“Do you think maybe they were lost too?”

“There were an awful lot of them. If they’re lost, they sure don’t wanna be found.”
The lemon bars melted in Lucy’s mouth. It had been a long time since she had any kind of citrus, and she tried to eat slower to enjoy it, despite being half starved. Her stomach rumbled happily. She took some of the bread and cheese and wrapped it in napkins, slipping it into her pocket.
“How old are you?” she asked after a while. “What’s your name? Um – all of it, not just Mel.”

“Okay. I’m ten.” Lucy smiled. She awkwardly put her hands in her lap, took them out, and folded them. “I like your hair.”

“Thanks!” There was still dirt and food stuck in it, and large snarls from falling into the thorns. Mel grinned from ear to ear, delighted by the compliment.
She tried some tea from her cup, and realized it was lukewarm and not very tasty. She added a few scoops of sugar and stirred. “What kinda cool things have you found while exploring this place? I usually draw a map, but I forgot to bring a journal.”

“Um. There was a… stone sitting area. A tower. A place that felt like a – uh – topsy-turvy house, except you can’t see it all from the outside. I named it the Crawlspace.”
Mel seemed impressed with the name, and Lucy was encouraged. She leaned forward, hunching her shoulders as she talked.
“Angry vines wanted to eat me. A rotting dog wanted to eat me, and a giant crow wanted to eat me.” She inspected her bony arms. “I must taste better than a honey roast. Sure don’t smell like it.”

Mel’s eyes got wider with each word Lucy said. She was honestly a bit jealous. “Wow. Only thing that tried eating me was the ground.” She glanced down as if it might try again, and pulled her feet up onto her mushroom, hugging her knees. “I doubt you taste very good. People I’ve bitten before were all salty and gross.”

Lucy turned on Mel and studied her intently. Her silver-gray eyes occasionally darted away, but came back, as if she was pulled by magnets but cared more about looking at her new friend.
“If you – no. If you do that, is it – no. S-Sometimes…” Her voice lowered as she argued with herself over the right thing to say. The longer she failed to say it, the less she wanted to say anything at all.
Finally she made a hmph sound and steadied her gaze. “Do you bite people when you’re angry?”

“Sometimes…” she said, suddenly feeling defensive. “But I don’t want to. Sometimes people don’t listen and I forget how to say things anyway! I promise I’m not mean. I won’t bite you. You’re my friend.” She hugged her knees a little bit tighter.

February 9, 2026 at 9:27 pm #210662Maybe Mel is seven, not eight. Idk. I was just realizing she reminds me of Lilo from Lilo and Stitch, who is only six. Ages are confusing to me.

Lucille
Maybe the labyrinth was more important to talk about. But Lucy suddenly wanted to say things. “I bite people when I’m angry.”
Saying it out loud seemed harder for her than it was for Mel. “I’m ten but I bite people. I hit and scratch and every time I do it – it’s like I’m tellin’ people they’re right to think things about me. I’ve done really, really bad things. But I – I don’t want to do it either.”

Lilo’s a great comparison. Yeah ages are confusing. I’ve been working with kids but I always forget the pace of the physical/mental change between ages 6-10.

Mel studied Lucy from behind her folded arms, feeling both happy that her friend understood, and frustrated that no one else did. She took a deep breath and inspected one of her dirty hands. “Maybe… maybe we’re the kids who can turn into animals. It’s not bad if we can’t help it, right? My mom said it’s not the neighbor cat’s fault if it scratches me when I pick it up, because that’s its way of asking me to let go.”
