fun fact: Sniper also has a brother, or well a half brother, but he hasn’t met him yet. He’s another oc of mine with his own interesting story.
OOOOoooooOOOOOoooo
Whatever the color of intrigued is, that is what I am right now.
Gabriel
“Yeah…I didn’t play with other children often either. I’ve spent most my life alone, and it’ll be that way again all to soon. That’s one reason why I cherish Lucy so much. I think if I had a little sibling, I’d feel the same way about them as I do about her. I think she’s rash and foolish at times, pfft, she almost got herself killed trying to keep me from getting wounded, but at the same time, I think she’s the most precious thing in my life. I’d do anything for her. Is that…how you feel about your brother?”

“Yeah! Get ‘em Luce!” Mel cheered while brushing a bit of dirt off her chin. When the fawn ran off into the bushes, her jaw dropped. “Hey, they’re just a buncha critters!” She turned and shoved the nearest person off their mushroom seat. It was a thin boy with pointed features and a high pitched laugh. His laugh turned into a yelp as he fell on the ground. Another kid with wild brown hair stood up on her seat, tea cup and saucer trembling in her hands. She spoke very quickly to no one in particular, proposing that they reschedule the meeting for another time. No one was listening. A couple children were running away in a panic, several sat confusedly in their seats, while the rest continued to laugh as Mel pushed another one off their seat.
“Everyone, scram!” Mel yelled, grabbing a spoon from the table and waving it threateningly in the air. “This tea party belongs to the human kids now!”

Oh, Gabriel… *Laughing but also feeling pain for him*
You don’t have any kids in your life, do you? Little kids are magically proficient at stealing hearts. He is new to this and he is extra susceptible to her sorcery.

She’s the most quintessential adventurer, so I feel like she’s going to constantly wander without fear, and that’s going to stress the older characters out. That’s what I’m looking forward to. XD
She’s the least intimidated by the labyrinth. Mel the Fearless.

“….I think she’s the most precious thing in my life. I’d do anything for her. Is that…how you feel about your brother?” Gabriel asked.
Is that how I felt about Scout?
Oh, sure, he annoyed the heck out of me more often than not…. But Gabriel’s words were actually scarily accurate. He was right. If I ever lost my twin–as I almost did one time–I’d feel like I lost part of myself.
I couldn’t help but agree. “He drives me crazy. But I can’t imagine a world without him.”

I have a hard time imagining Soldier with kids, but I couldn’t imagine them doing anything else. That’s stuff I used to do as a kid.

February 8, 2026 at 6:57 pm #210629@whalekeeper lol! I can imagine it tbh
also yes it was a bit hard to think of it initially but once his family was shown in canon I was like “Yep, this is exactly how it’d go.”
In the typical fashion for this universe, they were introduced when Soldier and his wife break his old ex-roommate out of prison (he got framed for something) and the family appears fascinated by a prison toilet. I have no idea why.

Lucille
“Humans?” One of the children shrieked and pointed. “It’s two of the humans!”
Suddenly the table was in absolute uproar. Several children picked up their plates and threw the contents at Mel. They began to yell and dance, somehow angry and exhilarated at the same time.
The girl with the horns was still eating bread. She threw a crust at Lucy. “Catch them, beat them – tie them up! Stupid, good-for-nothing mortals!”
“Throw a tea party for the serpent!” Someone cheered, banging the table.
Some of the larger kids grabbed Lucy. She threw them off. A boy threw her on the table, smashing the strawberry shortcakes, and she retaliated by hooking his arms in hers and flipping him off. Fists flew.
Someone hit Lucy in the eye, but the pain barely bothered her. Normally it would have – but Mel had jumped in to help. And the sight of another girl on her side was everything Lucy needed.
She and Mel were going to win. These animals didn’t know who they were messing with.
The wild children had begun to change, their hands turning into paws and hooves, and animal shrieks filled the air. But as they fully transformed, they seemed to lose interest in the fight. Many of them seemed more interested in the food. They grabbed sandwiches and truffles in their little claws and ran away. One by one, growling or chattering, they slunk off into the roses.
The last racoon lumbered away, a teacup balanced on his head. Lucy dropped her fist and spat loudly on the ground. “Milk livers.”

I guess it all comes together easier when it’s been illustrated in an animation/comic/whatever

“Hehe, milk doesn’t have livers.”
Mel sat down in the middle of the wreckage and set to picking pastry out of her hair. There was a large bruise forming on her chin, but she was smiling. She eyed the bit of food that hadn’t already been smashed or thrown on the floor. “Are you hungry?”

Lucy took one look at Mel, covered in bits of cake and lavender-dyed frosting. She nodded and burst into raspy giggles.

Mel grinned and waved her hand in a welcoming gesture. “Then come sit down!” She retrieved a mostly clean cup and saucer from the ground and poured some tea for herself and her friend. Then she loaded her plate up with lemon bars and different kinds of crackers and cheese. Lucy joined her. Between bites, Mel began to talk excitedly. “We showed them, didn’t we? What was their problem anyway? I have never met kids that were that weird. Hey, do you think they were kids who could turn into animals, or animals who could turn into kids?”

Lucy grabbed all the cucumber sandwiches but one – in case Mel wanted to try it – and stuffed one by one into her mouth. She tried to swallow too fast and fell into a fit of coughs, before finally answering. “Animals into kids. I’m weird, but they were too weird. Hey. Is that lemon?”
