Sniper
“Would you look for her, please? If she’s above ground, searching from the air is the fastest option, It could take days on foot.” Gabriel sounded a little desperate.
I understood. I’d never been put in charge of a child myself, but I could imagine what it’d be like, havin’ to watch out for ‘em.
Soldier nodded and took off, flyin’ in circles for a while before divin’ off in one direction, then another. He eventually disappeared.
Several hours went by. The labyrinth didn’t appear to be gettin’ any darker, even though back home on Australis it would’ve been approximately sunset by now. Seemed like this planet had an odd rotation cycle, or maybe its magic blocked normal perception of time.
I hadn’t ‘ad sleep in two days, but I could handle it. I’d gone without it for much longer than this several times before.
Huntress didn’t seem to share that trait right now. She moved like she was well-rested and didn’t ‘ave any ill effects from her injuries, which I was glad of, if not somewhat confused about it. Whatever that little creature had done worked very well.
A while later, Soldier came back. “I found something! A pond, with ducks! It’s huge though. I think we’ll need to cross it or go around it to search better.”

Mel considered this. “Hm… no. She was just kinda weird.”
She skipped ahead, twirling in circles as she admired the roses and plants around her. “It’s so pretty here, isn’t it? A good place to get lost.”
The path continued in a straight line, seemingly endlessly. As they walked, it gradually got narrower and narrower, and soon, Mel found herself walking sideways just to avoid getting pricked by the roses’ thorns. She didn’t mind.
“What’s your favorite flower?” she asked Lucille. “I don’t like roses.”

“I like roses but they’re better without the sharp parts.” Lucy pulled a loose rose off the wall and pinched off all the thorns she could find. She handed it to Mel. “We have hydrangeas and chocolate lace in our courtyard.”
She muttered the name chocolate lace to herself. It reminded her of a time she found dried chocolate on her mother’s doilies and licked it off. It turned out to be candle wax.
Yellow petals fell from the walls at the slightest breeze. As they followed the narrow path, carefully squeezing past thorny parts and marvelling at the colors, something began to change.
“M-Mel,” Lucy said, pushing leaves out of her face. “Do the flowers look larger than before?”

Gabriel didn’t stand up until Soldier’s return. The visible parts of his skin was turning splotchy, but he didn’t seem concerned. He nodded to Soldier, but didn’t speak.
Confuzzled, RAE

January 30, 2026 at 8:41 pm #210389I do not plan to return her right away, so Gabriel’s gonna have to cope. If he knows how. It’ll probably involve killing things.

I feel like I have done something similar to this before.

Mel
“Oh. Yeah, they do.” Impulsively, Mel leaned forward to smell one of the larger roses. As she got close, its petals suddenly closed and it pulled back, disappearing in the leaves. Mel yelped in surprise and fell back. Thorns snagged her clothes and hair from behind and she struggled for a moment before looking to Lucille, annoyed.
“I’m stuck.”

Lucille
Lucy held Mel’s head free of the thorns by her collar. She managed to pull Mel’s hair out of the thorns without hurting her, then pulled with all of her might.
Mel tore loose. The two of them fell, rolling down a slope in the path. Thick, cascading flowers shifted in their wake, the path disappearing behind them, filled with enormous roses.
The girls rolled to a stop, landing on a blanket of huge petals. Lucy got up, staring bitterly at the place where they had come from and the flowers blocking it. Everything seemed to have grown ten times larger without her noticing. “I don’t like flowers this much.”
From ahead came the sound of pealing, happy laughter like a mixture of different bells.
The two girls, curious, crept forward through thorns and emerald bushes.
In a clearing was a flat stump, the size and height of a table. There was a circle of enormous mushrooms around it. About a dozen children sat on the mushrooms, and food lay on the stump.
Sponge cake, cookies, roast beef, and cucumber sandwiches sat on tiered silver trays. Many parties and ladies’ clubs couldn’t have boasted such a fancy meal. The smell wafted on the wind, and some of the roses bent over the stump as if enjoying the aroma.
The children all had strange features. A couple of them had uncommonly crooked and pointed noses, another had legs like stilts, and the girl closest to Lucy had horns. The girl noticed the two lost travelers and nibbled on a slice of bread. “Who are you, then?”
Lucy held Mel’s hand. “We’re -”
“Doesn’t matter. You can sit next to me. It’s time for the N.M.A. meeting.”
“The what?”
The girl ate a hole in her bread, about the size of a penny. She stopped, looked at it, and dropped the rest of it on the grass. She took another slice and started nibbling again. “The Nothing Much Association. You’ve got to attend. It won’t amount to anything if you don’t participate.”
“W-What if I do?”
“Then it will amount to nothing.” The girl suddenly screeched at the top of her voice. “Let’s start! Everyone sit down or I’ll kick you!”
