*cue Gabriel crash out*

Mel dreamed that she was in school. She squirmed in her orange plastic chair, the teacher droning on in the distance. That was enough of that. She stood up and walked to the back of the classroom. Up on the wall was a familiar poster with a cartoon student standing tall with a smile on his face. The poster’s words swam around the student, unreadable, but she could still feel it judging her. She noticed a crack behind the poster in the wall. She wiggled her fingers into it and peeled it open. Blue, green, and pink jungle leaves sprouted from the crack, and she could smell fresh air on the other side. She crawled through.
She was in the forest, the one in between, along with all her friends and classmates who had come along with her. Without discussing it, they all decided to start a game of hide and seek. They scattered. Mel had the best spot in mind. She was going to win. There was a tree with a hidden hole under its roots. She wiggled her way inside. Wind started to blow through the branches of the trees.
There was a loud whooshing sound, whether in her dream or real, she couldn’t tell. Then something thudded on the ground next to her.
Barely opening her eyes, she saw the hazy image of another girl her age, maybe older, on all fours in the grass beside her. Her eyelids fluttered for a moment, before closing again.
“Mhnn… no, you can’t find me yet. Not ready…”
She rolled over so her back was to the girl, and drifted back into her dream.
Sorry for the long pointless rambling in this, but I have discovered that writing nonsensical dreams is actually really fun.

Gabriel Mai
Gabriel’s heart dropped into his stomach at Lucy’s scream. His gaze jolted to her being pulled into a strange tunnel. He yelled her name, running for her, but the tunnel closed. His body slammed into a solid wall. He gritted his teeth. Gabriel pushed into the wall with his shoulder. Maybe breaking it would open the tunnel again. All he gained was a dislocated shoulder. He popped his bone back into its socket with a sickening pop. He drew his blades, the red veins traveling into the metal. He tore into it, but the wall was to thick even for that. Desperate to break the wall, the glow that had gone up his blades this time going through his blood. He’d deal with the consequences later.
The wall gave way into rubble as he pushed through. He tumbled into grass on the other side. Gaining his feet, he scanned the field but there was no Lucy. Not even footprints in the grass. The glow underneath his skin faded.
He had lost her.
No…no! No! If I had just reached her…if I had just stayed with her…it’s my fault…
The voices overcame him then, screeching into his ears. He fell into the grass, biting his hand to muffle his screams of agony.

“Mhnn… no, you can’t find me yet. Not ready…” Someone mumbled nearby.
Lucy threw up on the grass. She was too dizzy to open her eyes, so she turned over to face the voice and curled into a tight fetal position. She buried her face into her rumpled trousers. “Uugghh… Shhh-Shut up…”

The smell of vomit reached Mel’s nose, and her eyes opened. She sat up and looked around.
“Eeeeewwwwwww,” she whined, her voice getting higher pitched. She scrambled to her feet. “What’d you do that for?”
The little ball of a girl on the ground mumbled something Mel couldn’t hear. She crouched and stared at the strange girl, restraining the urge to poke her. “… Are you okay?”

“Oh, I’m… peachy.” Lucy finally rolled onto her back and coughed, staring up at the person above her.
Her vision stopped spinning and she found that the girl was a young, probably younger than Lucy. The girl had long brown hair and a button nose, not to mention an expression between disgust and curiosity.
Lucy blinked. For a moment, she was taken aback by seeing another child and didn’t know what to say. “Who are you?”

“I…I didn’t think abut it earlier, I don’t know why, but before we leave this place behind, we should head back inside and look for cloaks. We’ll need them.” Gabriel said, and he looked like he was about to say more before a scream rang out.
The four of us whipped our heads toward Lucy, the girl he’d come with, just in time to see her fall through a gap in the wall.
The tunnel closed as Gabriel slammed into it, screaming for her, and he tore through the wall in an effort to find her.
This was a different place than where we’d fought the lizard, with a lot less labyrinth and fog somehow, because he landed on grass with a gray sky stretching out above him. The wall of the labyrinth was there, but distant.
I poked my head through and looked around. Gabriel was crumpled in the grass, writhing as if in pain. Weird, but I had no idea how to help him.
Soldier darted through, and after a second Sniper brought up the rear, looking around to make sure no creature had been waiting for us to enter its area.
He lashed his tail. “That was…strange. Where d’ya think we are now?”
“You didn’t see this terrain when I was knocked out?” I asked.
He shook his head. “Nah. Not like this.”
“What’s wrong with him?” Soldier pointed to Gabriel.
Neither of us had the answer to that.

After a minute or two, the voices quieted, and Gabriel sat up, shoulders slumped as if exhausted. “This place is similar to somewhere…Lucy and I have been before,” He looked up, but saw no crows or tower. “But it isn’t it.” He paused. “Please ignore my weakness just now, I’ll be…fine.” It was a clear lie. The voices hadn’t stopped, they had merely quieted, and his powers were already demanding payment out of his body.
“Can he fly or does the labyrinth prevent him?” He asked, nodding towards Soldier.

“I’m Mel! Who are you? And where did you come from? You scared my ducks.”
She pointed to the pond where the birds had all crowded in the opposite side. A few quacked in response.

January 21, 2026 at 8:04 am #209982Another side character scene
Magnus stepped slowly and carefully through the maze. He didn’t want to crush anything underfoot, but the mists swirled around his waist, obscuring his view. He used one big hand to wave away a section in front of him, then stepped over an ivy covered wall.
In this new section of the labyrinth, the ground began to slope up, which he was grateful for. Higher elevation sometimes meant less mist.
Several yards ahead, there was a large shadowy shape slumped on the ground. As soon as he noticed the shape, he also noticed the smell. Old blood and new death. He knelt down and waved the mists away. It was a troll. He examined it, but there was not much to learn besides that it was dead, and had been killed by something small. Despite his general dislike of trolls, he felt pity for this one, as he would with any creature killed before its time. He said a quiet prayer over it before moving on and searching the rest of the surrounding area.
A few yards away, he found something else. A stone person hidden behind some bushes. He leaned over and poked the statue gently. There had been a couple embarrassing moments in the past when he had mistaken a living statue for one of the Basilisk’s victims, so he needed to make sure. The statue wobbled slightly, but did nothing else.
Gently, he picked it up and looked at it more closely. It was a young woman. Human, probably. She had a weapon of some sort and was frozen with her arms up, holding it out in front of her. Magnus softened at the terrified look on her face. He felt he ought to keep this one safe, in case the Basilisk or her sister came back for her. He opened the leather pouch he carried at his side, and placed the statue carefully inside. The giant then closed the pouch, stood back up, and continued his march.
