Lucy nodded, although her hands began to shake.
The fear of being lost had come back, triggered by questioning herself. If she had confused Gabriel without meaning to, without doing anything, how long would it be before she did something wrong?
The pressure would come and she would snap, and that would be that. She was already struggling to adjust at every turn.
She was pretending. He didn’t know it.
If she told him, he might not treat her the same. But Gabriel was kind, and maybe he’d understand. It was difficult to explain something that never happened through words alone – something she didn’t understand about herself.
“I want to think,” Lucy said, barely audible. She walked away.

“I want to think.” the girl muttered as she walked away. Her protector stared after her before turning to us and asking, “Would you care to explain exactly what you are and what that imp took?”
“What we are?” Soldier looked a bit confused at the words. Sniper looked more like he was contemplating something.
“I’m assumin’ ya came from one of the other worlds in the cabinets, right?” he finally said. “Which means ya might not be familiar with us. I didn’t know half the creatures I saw through there, and I pride myself on knowin’ most of the galaxy’s animals and sentient races.”
“Cabinets?” I asked.
“I’ll explain later.” he said, before turning back to the other man. “What the…imp took was my bolt-action rifle. Ya don’t have any guns in your universe?”
The guy shook his head, not seeming to know what that meant.
“It’s a powered weapon. Blasts a small chunk of metal outta the front at hypersonic speeds, which can travel for miles if ya know how to work it right, and it kills quickly.” Sniper explained. “It’s not my only defense, though. Otherwise I wouldn’t ‘ave let him have it.” He patted the sheath on his belt where he currently held his knife.

Little bit of lore, Wond does actually have guns by the time of Gabriel’s story. In fact, they’re actually well-known in the rest of the world, and about the same technology level as WW1 and WW2. However, Gabriel’s country is an island that was cut off from the rest of the world over 200 years ago, and most the records about the rest of the world destroyed over time purposefully and accidentally. If his country even has a gun, it’s probably a relic in the capitol palace and kept away from public eye.

Gabriel nodded, his eyes drifting from Sniper’s tail to his knife, noting it. “I’m called the Protector, but…my real name is Gabriel.” Lucy had already called him by that name in front of them, and Gabriel had no intention on telling her to stop, it only made sense to tell them. “The girl is Lucy. If you try to hurt her, I won’t hesitate to attack you.” His eyes then wandered to the girl, and he paused, cocking his head to the side. “Miss, are those birthmarks? I’ve never seen any like that, yet they aren’t scars. White devil marks…” He mentioned the last bit quietly, but despite what his words implied, he said it more as if with a type of sorrow.
Gabriel kept one eye on Soldier.

It would make sense for him to call them white.

“Miss, are those birthmarks? I’ve never seen any like that, yet they aren’t scars. White devil marks…” Gabriel, as he was named, squinted at the stripes at my face, clearly unfamiliar with them.
Despite the fact that he called them “devil marks” he appeared more sad about it than fearful or angry, as he would if he believed I was dangerous. Maybe he thought I’d been cursed?
“I guess you could call them that. I’m half-Changeling. My skin can change its shade.” I explained, holding out my arm and camouflaging it to the floor beneath us for a few seconds. “All Changelings have stripes in a pattern unique to their family, and I inherited mine from my father. My twin brother, he doesn’t have stripes or camo abilities, but he does have a slightly forked tongue. Literally, not necessarily figuratively.”
He seemed like he was paying attention, but he also kept an eye on Soldier, who was standing still for once.
“He’s no harm if you don’t upset him. Also, don’t look him in the eye.” I said. “Which should be fairly easy considering his helmet.”
“What? What’s wrong with my helmet?” Soldier asked from the other side of the room. Far away from Lucy, fortunately.
“Nothing’s wrong with your helmet!” I yelled back to him.
I turned back to Gabriel. “He’s an Ornithiform, the birdlike race of our galaxy. Forgive him if he ever acts a little animalistic.”
Sniper
“And what about you?” Gabriel asked. He still watched Soldier, but he was focused on me, takin’ specific note of my tail.
“He’s an Argonite. The last of his kind, as far as we can tell.” Huntress explained. “Well, okay, the species is actually very common. But he’s special. Tell him, Sniper.”
“I was the only survivor of my planet.” I explained. “I didn’t know that until a couple years ago, ’cause I was too young to remember when it happened, but it explained pretty much everythin’ about me.” I held up my right arm to show off the scales that ringed my wrist. “No one else has this asymmetrical birthmark. Not my adoptive parents, nor anyone else I knew. Only my biological family. We were also smaller, lankier than our kin on the other planets.” I sighed. “I’ve been lookin’ for others who escaped for a long time now. It was by sheer accident that I made it out, but maybe some others coulda launched their ships before the flood overtook ’em. Huntress and I would likely ‘ave been travelin’ the galaxy searchin’ for them right now if we weren’t ‘ere in this labyrinth.”

@rae Reading some of your older rp’s and I came across the park where your character says he has been insulted by other people. does Gabriel also have some kinds of markings on his face/skin?
That would explain the “devil marks” remark.
