Throwing axes is pretty fun, I’ve done it a couple times

The hatchet was smooth and solid in Lucy’s hand, curved to fit her grip. She tested its weight before nodding to Gabriel and pulling her arm back.
With surprising force, she whipped it at the tree. With a metallic clang, the hatchet ricocheted off the stone wall behind. The noise was so loud that Lucy flinched and covered her face with her arms.

Gabriel patted her shoulder lightly as if to say it was alright, though his own ears didn’t appreciate the sound.
“Nice try.” Gabriel picked up the hatchet, and gave it back to her. “Throw it straight. Take your time if you have to, and don’t put so much force in. You only need enough to lodge it in the tree, not to get it permanently stuck. Otherwise, good job.”

It soon became obvious that Lucy had less trouble using her own strength than quelling it. Every time she threw the hatchet, she overshot and sent it zinging back over the stoned ground.
But aiming seemed like a more important thing to get right, and after a couple tries, she remembered to pause and focus on the tree. She hit the tree for the first time, and although the hatchet bounced off, it left a notch in the wood.
Lucy blew warmth into her hands and frowned. “I’m trying to remember that time my mom did this at a festival. She won a hat.”

Gabriel smiled softly. “Take a step closer to the tree before you throw again, it should properly rotate and lodge in the tree that way,” He took the hatchet and lodged it perfectly in the tree. He retrieved it for Lucy before speaking again. “I’ve seen such games at festivals. I never participated, though I have been tempted before. I…never participate in festivals, despite the begging of some people I know.”

“Bet they wanted you because you’d win.”
She stepped forward, gray eyes focused sharply on the tree, and the hatchet sunk into the bark.

Gabriel clapped, genuinely smiling under his mask. “Just like that! No, only the Fourth knows I can throw hatchets. To my acquaintances, they would say I’d be the first one to die if a monster attacked because I have no self-preservation and they think I have no training,” Gabriel chuckled, amused by their opinions. “No, Isabella has just always wanted me to go because she says I never have any fun. I tell her I need sleep, in reality, festivals are a magnet for monster attacks, even in the daytime, so I usually patrol the village walls.” Gabriel sighed. That was all his life was, working to put food on the table for himself and his mentor, and then going out to fight monsters until he was too tired or too wounded. Despite the confusion and cursed nature of the labyrinth, here he had smiled for the first time in weeks as he watched his little self-appointed charge.

Lucy pulled the hatchet out of the tree. Her cheeks glowed red from the effort and her arms felt good from the exercise. She cradled the head in one hand and the handle in the other, striding back to Gabriel.
She didn’t smile very much, not doing so on the best of days, but gave him all of her eyes’ attention. “Is Isabella your sweetheart?”

“No. I don’t have anyone like that. Isabella is simply the one who gives me cinnamon buns while making some sort of banter comment.” Gabriel shook his head.
I will say Isabella most definitely has a crush on him, though he’s oblivious because he has no idea what that looks like XD.

Sorry that I haven’t been replying as soon as usual. A raffle I was hosting on Unvale ended and I’m trying to organize and get the winners their prizes.

“Because it’s a secret, and we aren’t that close. To be honest, the only people I know from that village who I trust not to gossip about it is Master, Isabella and her brother. Master knows, since he trained me. I think Jonathan suspects, but Isabella is so caught up in daydreams about who the Protector could be, and her own ideas of what he looks like under the mask that I think she’d faint if I told her.”

Gabriel shook his head. “It isn’t proper for a Protector to share his secret with many people. Besides, if they discovered my birthmarks, the fact I’m the Protector wouldn’t save me. I’ve already been marked as a demon by my previous village, and they’ve all seen the Protector fight at some point or another.” The red light, in the form of some kind liquid, curled up Gabriel’s arm. “This isn’t something a normal person has, and my senses are…enhanced with my strength and speed. And when I use the power to much, it feels like my body burns, but there are no flames or scars.” The voices were getting a little louder in his ears again. “That’s why I wonder if my village was right.” Instantly, the screaming started again. As before, Gabriel covered his ears my instinct even though it didn’t help, slumping forward. His mind frantically groped for other things, hoping it would quell the shrieks, but he couldn’t focus.

When the screaming quieted, Gabriel answered. “Pretty much, though I don’t know what a Chee-wa-wa is. Ditching them? I can’t. At the moment, the village I live in has had an increased number of attacks despite the population not growing by a large amount, and a few new varieties of monsters have appeared in that area, so I’ve been investigating why. Besides, at least as the Protector I have purpose. And…admittedly, I enjoy fighting monsters.”

For a while, neither of them had anything to say. Lucy slipped the leather cover onto the hatchet, and they moved on, the tree’s fallen leaves trailing behind them. While they had spent time there, a darker mass of clouds had approached on the horizon and the wind howled somewhere above their heads.
“Do you think I could be a monster hunter?” Lucy asked.
