ExcUse me. Noodle arms?? How dare you

I’ve gtg to bed. I will reply to your next thing when I have time tomorrow.

      Lucille

She shrugged. “I’ve hammered a rail spike before. Can’t be much harder.”

She didn’t bother to mention she had adult help in the challenge.

        Gabriel Mai

“The hardest part will be hitting the target. You shouldn’t have too much trouble. You’re stubborn, and the hatchet is nicely balanced.” His hearing was a little clearer now, though still no where near as sharp as he’d like. “Shall we enter now?” He started up the steps, testing them for rotten boards before he stepped fully on them. The stairs already didn’t look in the best of shape. They spiraled up for quite some time, Gabriel occasionally skipping an especially creaky step that he didn’t trust, before ending on a small platform in front of a door.

I’m not sure if you had plans for this stairway, so I’ll end it here. Can continue (I always have endless amounts of random ideas to pull out to confuse poor Lucy).

          Lucille

Gabriel opened the door and they slipped into an open, circular room. A room filled with doors.

The doors surrounded Gabriel and Lucy. Tall, stove-sized, ash-white wood, paneled peeling rust – decorated with ornate arches, they encircled the room together. Lucy recognized most of the materials, even if some designs confused her. All were shut.

The ceiling gaped over them, gripping the floor with smooth marble pillars like the fingers of a giant statue. Familiar old wallpaper plastered the wall and clashed with the marble. Cold flames in sconces illogically left brown stains on the wall. Black and white checkered flooring spiraled out from a table in the center.

After so much discord, the place had a frightening sense of purpose.

Gabriel stood still. He had to be thinking furiously. Now they had multiple paths to choose from. Each door looked radically different from the other.

Lucy tried to pull a door open. She grunted and tried a few more. “…Locked.”

The table in the middle of the room was promising. A key made of black and silvery green metal lay on the smooth wood surface. Lucy took a closer look at it.

A paper was tied to its neck with twine. It looked like a train ticket, with circled numbers printed on it and holes punched beside them.

          All Purpose Key

Produced exclusively for searchers, travelers, and thieves with good intentions

[Doors, lockers, padlocked secrets, et al.]

          Seven (7) uses before self-destruct.

Only one number on the ticket was unpunched. The key must have been used many times; by whom, they had no way of knowing. Lucy found cracks in the metal, and brushing her fingers over them pulled away chunks of green dust. It might fall apart any second.

Lucy delicately held the key out to Gabriel. “What should we do?”

I was thinking they might magically see their homes through two different doors (magically appearing windows/sliding panels or whatever) and it can be a puzzle of sorts since they can only use the key once

oOoOoooOh I like this idea (much better than my randomness lol)

            Gabriel Mai

Gabriel ran his fingers over the wood of the doors. Perfectly smooth, not a splinter. He tried a handle, finding it locked like the one Lucy had tried. If he had to, he wondered if he would be able to break one of these doors down. Was it hollow or solid? He knocked, checking.

Gabriel blinked in mild surprise as a peephole appeared. Looking through, he saw milky white rivers, giant purple mushrooms for trees, and a sky of pale pink/

He went to another door and knocked. The same peephole appeared, but instead of the pastel, peaceful world he saw before, he saw huge stacks of rectangles with hundreds of lights. Gabriel wondered how many candles there were, and how much they all cost. Strange things with lights too, moved along smooth dark pathways, each pathway divided by colorful lines of yellow and white.

He knocked and looked through another door as he went to speak, “Lucy,” He stumbled back in shock. “That…that…” He looked again. An old man sitting in a stone cottage alone, sleeping in a rocking chair, a book hanging open on his lap, glasses inching down his resting face as he snored. Gabriel pulled down his mask, making sure the rune wasn’t playing tricks on him. After the initial shock, his features softened in fondness. “Master stayed up reading again instead of going to bed.”

              Lucille

Lucy ran up next to him. “Let me see – come on.”

The peephole was too high for her, and Gabriel had to help her up.

She peeked through the hole. The sight of a warm, stone room greeted her eye. An old man sat on a chair, rocked back and resting, a book’s pages turning in the air of their own accord.

“You can go home,” she whispered.

Sorry for replying so late for being active, i was reflecting on your post in the Prayer thread and forgot we were rping.

                  Gabriel Mai

“Hm? No, the imp said the only way back were the crystal orbs, this is probably just a tease, an image to make me more desperate to get home. Come, let’s see if they have an image of your home too.” He started knocking on another door, trying to distract himself from the longing to be back home. He was the only source of income for his mentor, and he was far from able to defend himself if a monster attacked the cottage. Speaking of monsters, he wondered now how many attacks there had been on the village. He wondered what Isabella and Jonathan thought when he didn’t show up in the morning as usual.

                  The whispers started getting louder.

That’s alright; as you can see I did not reply promptly

                    Lucille

“It looked real to me,” Lucy argued.

Her attention was taken by a more typical door she would have seen in her city, in one of the courtyards. The door had a letterbox. Through a crack, warm light glowed, and a faint unidentifiable sound crackled from within.

Lucy pushed the slot open by sticking her fingers through. Light shone through and made her blink.

At first, it was impossible to focus on the other side of the slot. Then she recognized the yellowed floor panels and the old wall ahead. Lit by electric lights that buzzed like insects, it was a maintained place but completely still.

Not a movement, nothing alive. Just a faint monotone crackle from somewhere deep inside the space.

It was a poor view, staring into a closed space. But it had to be the useless corridor between their apartment and the Costas’. It was boarded up on the opposite end to theirs.

Lucy’s pulse quickened. Maybe – maybe her father would pass by. He could pass the letterbox and disappear within seconds. Who know how long they had a chance to find her; who knew if they wanted to stay in the apartment or leave and never come back…

“Da? Mama!” Lucy called through the slot desperately. She tried to open the door, but of course it didn’t budge. She pressed an ear against it to listen.

The crackling was still there, but someone’s voice barely murmured over it. Footsteps.

Lucy knocked the wood, scraping her knuckle. “I’m here! Agh!”

                          Gabriel Mai

Gabriel watched her desperation, momentarily hoping that the doorway really did lead to her world, but he doubted it.

“If…if the doorway really does lead back to our worlds, then you should…go back.” It hurt to say it. He knew he’d never see her again after she went home. A tiny part of him hoped his suspicion that the doorways were nothing but a tease was true, just because he didn’t want to say good-bye. Yet he knew  that it was wrong of him to feel that. He pushed it down.

Lucy stopped to look at Gabriel breathlessly. A cluster of emotions throttled her head, mostly fear. Urgency.

Her hope spiked when the footsteps grew louder, and hair rose up her neck when the light in the slot flickered to black.

“I…” She found herself staring at the key in Gabriel’s hand.
