My CC tutor’s granddaughter is named Lucy. She looks nothing like your Lucy, but every week we get a dose of cute baby pictures because we can’t resist and neither can my tutor.
Now every time I read your rps, what pops into my mind are big, curious eyes, and extremely fluffy pink baby slippers XD.

“It can be stuffy,” He replied. “In terms of material things, that would be my grumpy gripe.” He was silent for a moment, taking in a deep breath, before speaking again. “Emotionally it’s different. With the mask, I am the Protector, I protect human life without discrimination, I act with decisiveness and hide my emotions behind a mask and a fake voice. Without it, I’m Gabriel Mai, a man who lived for years alone in a dangerous forest, because his village wished he would die. Without the mask, I’m…fearful. Fearful that one day the people I have protected will see the same man my village saw.” Gabriel reached up, playing with his right earring. “Is that what you wanted to know?”
The voices had temporarily quieted.

“I guess. It might be stuffy sometimes and okay sometimes,” Lucy thought out loud. Then she reconsidered his words, realizing he maybe wasn’t just answering her question. “Hm. I’m sorry your village hated you. Some other kids say I should be dead but they’re sick in their heads. People who say that need to be nicer or study science more, or subscribe to good papers. O-Or maybe take a walk somewhere nice.”

At the mention of other children saying such things to Lucy, Gabriel visibly bristled. “I agree, at least in your case.” Silently, his thoughts were running through what he would do to someone who ever said that to her, but Lucy didn’t need to know those thoughts. “But in my case, I wonder if they were right at times.”
The voices screeched, stopping Gabriel in his tracks. His hands flew again to his ears, shoulders stooping over, as if trying to make himself smaller. Go away, go away, go away! He mentally shouted at the voices, biting his lip to keep from shouting it out loud.

Lucy paused. She peered at Gabriel intently, watching him curl forwards. She wasn’t sure what to do, but she tried to show that she wasn’t repelled. “Aye… You can shout if you need to. If you need to, you should do it.”

Gabriel hesitated, shoulders trembling slightly. He removed his right hand, burying his face in his elbow, fingernails digging into his shoulder, and yelled.
Eventually the voices faded back down to their whispers, Gabriel’s shoulders still trembling slightly, but he stood fully upright, swallowed, and then said with all the steadiness he could muster. “Shall we continue?”

“Can I help?” Lucy asked, beginning to feel concerned at this point and guilty for not knowing what to do. She clutched her new handkerchief in her pocket, ready to pull it out in case he needed it, but also twisting it nervously between her fingers. “It seems like your ears get pretty sore.”

Gabriel could barely hear her, his hearing temporarily dulled. His gaze shifted to her once he realized she was speaking. “They’re…” His voice sounded distant, dull, as if his voice box was buried underground. “Okay. I think. I…don’t know. We should…keep going.”

They came to a room without any extra doors. Gabriel looked for windows behind the curtains, while Lucy went to the nearest wardrobe. She found a flight of steps inside and waited for Gabriel to notice and confirm.
“Do you want me to stop talking?” she asked.

Gabriel swiped back the curtains, but all he saw was ivy growing over the window. He sighed, then thought he heard Lucy talking. Turning around, he saw her by a wardrobe, steps inside it spiraling up into another part of the strange house. “Huh? Did you say something?” He resisted the urge to touch his ears again, hoping they weren’t bleeding. His head hurt, his mind wanting to spiral.

“I…like hearing you talk. I just can’t hear very well right now. Feel better? I…” He wanted to curl into a ball on the floor until his head stopped swirling, until his hearing returned, but he wouldn’t. “I’m not sure. Just stay close and safe.” He wanted comfort. From the Fourth, his steady presence, always there in a silent or talkative way, with a cup of tea. Even from his mother. He remembered her embrace vaguely, warm, rare, and calming. But showing such weakness when he was meant to keep Lucy safe wasn’t an option to him. He already had been weak enough with the voices.
He tested the first step of the stairs, finding it creaky but solid. He sniffed the air. Stale. No scent of life.

“Hm.” Lucy stood next to Gabriel in the doorframe and watched him pause at the first step. She considered what she did with her parents in stressful emergencies. Awkwardly, she took his arm and gave him a hug.

Gabriel froze, then his muscles relaxed. He reached out his other arm, awkwardly hugging her back, gently as if she were made of delicate glass.
“Thank you.” His voice was soft, quiet, no more than a whispering wind of gratitude and faint joy at the gesture.

It wasn’t natural for her to smile that wide but she wanted to do it.
