Yeah, big-sibling little-kid energy but also mentor-follower. Lu doesn’t have siblings either and she’s mentally associating this with adults she knows. If she becomes Barnes again, they’ll probably be shocked but fall into the same dynamic because there’s a large age gap either way. (How old is Gabriel?)

The Protector — Gabriel Mai
Gabriel nodded. “Good.” He stood, the voices that still had been whispering in his head that day were quiet as he had bound up her arms, but now they returned, a constant noise slowly driving him insane.
Gabriel waved one of his glowing blades ahead. The walls were rough like brick, the floor with layers of dust. He handed on of his blades to Lucy handle-first.
“Use it for light. The glow should continue as long as I’m close.” He started walking down the corridor, making sure she followed. The dust kicked up in their faces, even with his mask, Gabriel coughed. Eventually, it ended in an old creaky set of stairs. At the top of the stairs, it opened into a dusty room, mostly empty, except a random piano in the center of the room. Gabriel paused.
“What is that?”

“Dunno why they’d put a piano in here. I wonder who they are.” Lucy couldn’t tell if they had returned to ground level – after taking the door that led into earth – or if they were in the labyrinth’s basement. The floor had sloped slightly as they walked, sometimes up and sometimes down. Even here, her internal compass was scrambled.
Like 19. I haven’t exactly decided, but around there.
I guessed well! Barnes is around 30, probably a touch younger

“A piano? This is a piano?”
Gabriel touched it gently, dust flying into the air. He jumped back defensively as an off-tune note rang in the air from the key he pressed.
“Is that normal?” He watched the piano like a curious kitten, not sure if they should attack, ignore, or play with it.

“You’ve…” Lucy trailed off, brow furrowing. She clacked her fingers over the keys and tried to play a folk song, but only knew a few seconds of it.

I love how Lucy is wondering why there’s a piano in the room, while I’m over here like “It couldn’t be empty, and just a couch or chair is boring, so piano was the first thing I thought of”. I think it’s safe to say this is a weird place and there can be weird random objects scattered within. Maybe that says something about the labyrinth masters, not so much the piano itself.

When Lucy tried to play the piano, Gabriel relaxed, realizing it was merely an instrument. He pressed a few keys exploratorily, sneezing as the dust traveled under his mask and into his nose. “Is it a magic instrument? Most the ones in my world are ones you have to blow wind through to work, or have strings that you pluck, or are drums, but these doesn’t seem to have any of those. It’s most like a drum hitting it, but the sound is so different.” He pressed a few more keys, captivated. “Is it a fairy?” He asked, looking at Lucy.
He is so confuzzled.

Lucy had to choke down a snort. She took the piano lid and pulled. It was heavy but had no hinges. It fell off with a thunderous boom. She scampered back, lost her balance, and sat down suddenly. Dust rose and she let out two sharp sneezes.

Gabriel flinched at the loud boom of the piano cover. He cast Lucy a glance, making sure she was okay, before peering inside the piano. “It does have strings.” He hit one of the keys, watching the hammer strike the corresponding string inside the piano, silently fascinated.
Eventually, he dropped his hand to his side, turning to Lucy again. “Are you ready to go on? Or do you want to play with this piano thing?”

There was another door ahead; gray, with wooden panels, it was the kind of door that hid along an equally gray wall in a sagging house.
“I want to know why it’s here.” Lucy got up and, after some thought, played a descending scale.
The floor creaked. As Lucy played, the room shifted like a ship at sea, and when she looked at the Protector, he was recovering his balance. Everything had tilted toward the exiting door. The door swung open and the hallway beyond went down into darkness.

Gabriel sheathed his blades. Now only the rune on his mask glowed, but he knew if the room tilted and they fell, his unsheathed blades could kill one of them. He grabbed Lucy’s hand, nervous about being separated again.
“Before this room shifts anymore, let’s get out of here.” He looked around the room, hoping there was another door to go through, his heart uneasy about going through the door that the house seemed to want them to choose, but there was no other door visible. Keeping his hold on Lucy, he carefully approached the door, and passed over the threshold.

After he was sure the floor was steady, the Protector gave Lucy one of his blades again. Lucy held it with the tip pointing down, but it glowed enough to illuminate their path. The walls swelled from years of shifting earth; dark solidified soil cracked through the plaster. Where the wall was unbroken, someone had decorated it with wallpaper. Red light from the blades bounced off it and hid its original color.
Lucy watched the Protector as they walked. His earrings glinted when he turned his head minimally to catch every new detail they passed. He kept a thoughtful gaze down the passageway.
Lucy stopped looking at him but spoke. “Is the mask keeping people from who you are?”

Gabriel paused. “I suppose. When I don’t wear my mask, I’m merely a strange peasant. When wearing the mask, people think I’m a hero. They say I’m probably some rich knight who decided to dedicate themselves to protecting the people from afar. They never suspect that the real man behind the mask struggles to earn enough for himself and his mentor, while walking among them.” Gabriel chuckles a little. “There’s a woman I know who’s always talking about the Protector, theorizing, while at the same time turning to me and saying ‘Gabriel, you’d definitely die in a werewolf attack.'” Gabriel chuckled again, then stopped, realizing he had just inadvertently told Lucy his name. He decided that it didn’t matter to him if Lucy knew, for once he could talk to someone besides his mentor without deepening his voice or hiding any telling emotion. And he liked it. “My name is Gabriel Mai.”
