        Lucille

It had been less than an hour. After a few moments, she stirred. “I saw a bit.”

She got up and, without waiting for him to ask for more, went to the same wall from before. She climbed it again, much slower. The wind blew into her face as her head rose over the top, stinging her eyes and fluffing her short, downy hair.

This time she focused. Every time the mist floated from an area, she studied it, looking for anything different.

She coughed, voice dulled from her rest, and called down. “There… There’s a hill over that way. Southeast.”

          The Protector — Gabriel Mai

Gabriel climbed up the wall himself, but instead of looking to the southeast, his attention was raptured by something more south. “Flying creatures. Those won’t be fun to fight.” After watching them for a few seconds, he finally looked for the hill, barely making it out through the silver mist. “I see the hill. Do you wish to head for there next?” He walked along the wall, eyes scanning the passages of the maze. “If the maze doesn’t move again from as it is now, I might be able to find a way to it.” He pulled up his mask, curious if the rune over his left eye would show him anything.

            Lucille

Lucy watched as the Protector was preoccupied with using his mask. “Yeah. If -”

A deep-throated shriek cut her off. A great rustling exploded on the other side of the wall and Lucy’s stable footing did not help as a black feathery mass pushed her off and into the air.

She couldn’t hear her own voice over the bird cries. A swarthy body of crows flapped aggressively around her; above her, a huge entity gripped her collar and cast a shadow on the ground. The wall already lay far below her feet.

                Gabriel Mai — The Protector

“Lucy!” His heart pounded in panic, a hammer inside his ribcage. He was helpless to rescue her, his blades weren’t for throwing even if he tried. He had no projectile weapons. He looked around frantically, and his eyes alighted on pieces of broken stone on the ground. He dropped down, hoping the bird wasn’t already out of his throwing reach…and hoping he didn’t accidentally hit Lucy. He picked up a sharp piece of rock. His panic turned to rage, that cherry red energy making veins around the stone, as he flung it, aiming for the crow’s head.

                Gabriel hates giant crows now.

Gabriel has ornithophobia now. I’m making this so hard for him

                  Lucille

The crow dodged sharply to the side and Lucy yelped. A rock flew through the air and missed the crow’s head by inches. The Protector was already running after them and aiming another rock. The crows cackled in response.

Lucy desperately kicked her legs. She could unbutton her jacket but that was no use. She was too high up, and if she fell now, she could break more bones than she could bear. The amphitheater was shrinking – it was the size of a dinner plate in her hands now, and the sudden rush of air made her dizzy.

The Protector, so far below, had such an obvious fear on his eyes that Lucy was more alarmed because of him than anything. He couldn’t keep up with the giant birds; they were quickly gaining distance.

“I’ll get down!” Lucy called. “Find me! Just – please!”

So mean lol. My poor innocent little charrie

All good, I’ve done worse to him…

                    Gabriel Mai — The Protector

Gabriel swung up the wall on the ampitheatre again, watching the bird fly away, looking over the many passages of the maze, hoping to find a way to follow. As he gained reason again, he realized that was a hopeless wish. If he tried to follow inside the labyrinth, if the bird changed direction, or the walls shifted, he’d loose all hope of finding Lucy again. He could only watch the black form of the massive bird, hoping it would set Lucy down within sight of the ampitheatre where he could find her from there. Then he’d kill that stupid bird when he got a chance to.

All good, I’ve done worse to him…

Such is the life of a charrie

                      Lucille

Most children wonder at some point in their life – what is it like to be eaten? How much does it hurt? Does it take very long?

Lucy hung from the crow, feet dangling, and spoke quietly to herself. “S’pose the Lord knew it was… yeah, it was good to be me. I liked being you, Lu.”

She dug around in her pockets for the photo book and her family picture, taking a last look at it before stuffing it away again. A strange feeling she couldn’t identify fluttered in her ribs.

The crow took a sharp turn downward. Lucy felt herself slipping for a second and blood drained from her face, but the crow regained its grip. A mass of dark branches appeared below, a nest, and suddenly they rushed upon it.

The claws let go. Sharp wood scratched Lucy’s hands and legs; she ignored the pain and scrambled into the dark recesses of the nest.

The nest was so large and thick that much of it lay hidden from the light. It was made of branches, bits of pipe, and weather-beaten objects. Lucy was surprised to find human inventions tangled in the wood. A bike lay with its wheels weaved into the nest’s curve; a sparkling bronze-painted car door propped against it. There was even a four-poster bed, crushed by the thick branches, although it was too far inside the branches to reach.

“Shiny.” The crow spoke. Its voice rumbled in its throat, low, and accented with crackles like those in a fire. It cocked its head and its beady eye stared into Lucy’s eyes. “Or eat.”

                      “…Me?”

The crow cawed, its beak clicking so sharply that Lucy flinched. It hopped toward her. The momentum shook the nest’s foundation. Metal objects and jewelry strands clattered against each other.

Lucy cowered. She backed father into the thick nest material and curled into the smallest ball she could manage.

The bird became impatient. It seemed to sense that Lucy had nothing for it, or it simply didn’t want to share with the murder of crows that circled above. It jumped up and down, flapping its wings, and tore into the nest’s side with a claw. The claw immediately crushed the branches and bent the pipes, reaching dangerously close for its prey.

It was at this moment that the other crows landed. They cackled at each other angrily. Their conversation turned into a hostile dance. The nest creaked and shuddered under their weight.

Lucy turned away and crawled through the nest. The sharp, bent objects scratched her at every turn, as she had to crawl over and through them.

She found the edge. Her hope faded. It was like standing at the top of a three-story building. The nest sat on an abandoned, featureless tower in the middle of a clearing. There was no way to get down, and certainly no way for the Protector to climb up if he found her.

I’m probably the cause of your brain’s suffering. I wrote a lot. XD Gabriel will be of most help if he defends her after she gets down. I’m sure she can think of how to get that far.

And after over 12 hours, I return.

                                  @whalekeeper

I had to pull out a plot device

                                  The Protector — Gabriel Mai

The shadowy form of the bird faded slowly into the mist, and Gabriel’s heart sunk. He couldn’t wait, he’d have to hope the crow kept its steady direction, and enter the maze to pursue it. He adjusted his mask, pulling the red ribbon tight. His eyes scanned the maze, looking for the best route towards where the crow was going, before he dropped down into the maze, feet squishing on the wet moss as he ran through the maze, hoping against hope that the maze didn’t shift and that the crow didn’t change directions.
His shoulder clipped the stone as he turned a sharp corner, feet skidding across the wet moss, before regaining his balance, running on without stopping. Sharp, cold breaths entered his lungs through his nose, each smell of the labyrinth, the sweet honey of flowers, the musty moss, the woody brush, the faint smell of death from probably another monster, all entered his nostrils in a flood. His heartrate had calmed a bit, his panicked heartbeat kept at bay by the familiar running, the thrilling race for life and limb. Yes, he fought as the Protector keeping people safe out of duty, but Gabriel knew the thrill was the thing that lifted him up and pushed him out of the door everyday at dusk and dawn. Even though he still worried for Lucy, there was some comfort in the familiar adrenaline.
The maze hadn’t shifted yet, and the outline of the crow was still faintly visible, though he would loose it in a second if the mist didn’t clear. He kept running, until he fell. He didn’t trip, he plummeted, as if off a cliff. He grabbed the wet, mossy stone as he went down, his sides banging into rock, his arm straining as he dangled over a stone pit, a pile of brush at the bottom, hanging by his hand struggling to grip slippery moss. He cursed, trying to swing his body back up, but as soon as he moved, his fragile grip on the moss slipped, and he fell in the brambles beneath him. He struggled out of the brambles, looking back up at the top of the pit. The walls were too smooth and slippery to climb. There was nothing around him to help him up. He cursed again, then sighed, imaging what the Fourth Protector would say if he heard Gabriel now.
The stone beneath him rumbled, and he spun around, looking for the cause of the movement. The wall to the pit behind him pulled away, revealing an underground passage. H elooked back at the top of the pit, knowing risking the passage was his best option. He drew his blades, and started running again. There was no moss in this passage, there was no flora or fauna at all. The air was chokingly stale and humid. The entire passage felt like summer’s heat, making sweat drip under his mask and sting Gabriel’s eyes.
He finally stopped when he reached a fork in the passages. He inhaled, calming his breathing, and caught a whiff of fresh air, though it didn’t smell sweet by any means. It smelled faintly of musty feathers and the wet moss throughout the labyrinth, but to Gabriel, the fresh air was more promising than the staleness of the other passage. He started running again, coming to another pit like the one he had fallen into, but this time, some of the cursed vines had grown into the pit. Gabriel sheathed his blades, grabbed one, and climbed it up as they came alive. He pulled out one of his blades again, the cherry red veins running through the blade, cutting the vines that had grabbed him, then ran down the maze passage he had come up in, only stopping to take his bearings when the vines stopped pursuing him.
His ears were met by strange cackling, rough, as if from a sore throat. He thought it was another form of the voices in his head, but a glance upwards told him different. There, circling and resting upon a tall tower where the giant crows. He tried a few different passages of the maze before coming out into a grassy clearing. There was a great building, like a castle, with the tower where the crows sat around a giant nest.

I apologize for any mistakes, and also for taking so long.

                                  I’m tired.
