Lucy traced over them. They felt rougher than they looked, somewhat like her father’s. She bent his hands into fists and out again, folded them together, and briefly pretended his fingers were keys and she was playing the piano.
It was the kind of game that made no sense but relaxed her. She did it for a little while until she felt less shaky. “I still think you’re suspicious but you killed that embodiment o’ rabies, so I’ve decided I’ll follow you and see you as a caregiver.”

No idea. My big brother has a birthmark that looks almost exactly the same on his neck, and it does similar weird things where it gets darker and lighter. Not sure if its for the same reason mine does, I’ll have to ask.

When the young man looked at her, Lucy suddenly didn’t feel like talking about it. She took the jacket and lay over it on the stone, hiding her face.

It seemed like a good time to rest anyway. She didn’t need to sleep, but it couldn’t hurt to lay still.

He caught strange scents in the invisible wisps, most he had never smelled before, a few he vaguely recognized, but couldn’t decide how. His gaze wandered to the trees, then he turned to Lucy, whispering softly in case she was sleeping. “Lucy, if you’re awake, can you tell me if you could see over the maze from those trees? Or was the mist too thick?”
