Lucille
Lucy nodded.
The Protector tensed. He was right to, as soft thumps sounded ahead of them, far along the next section. Something dark sliced through the mist. It was too far away to see clearly but it was something long and flexible, like a whip.
The clicks had grown louder, but they suddenly stopped along with the footfalls. The mist settled again. The smell, unfortunately, did not fade.
Lucy’s voice barely broke the silence. “Is it a hound?”

The Protector — Gabriel Mai
“I don’t care what it is, I want it dead,” Gabriel replied, sharp eyes studying the creature even from this distance.
It indeed had the four legs and lean body of a hound, but the muscles were anatomically incorrect, and had strange bumps like warts under the skin. It’s feet had three claws, large and curved like Toucan beaks. Gabriel assumed this was the origin of the clicking sound, the claws clacking together as the creature lifts its foot, then spreading out again as it sets them down. The whip that cut the fog was the creature’s long tail, which swayed above its head, curved like a scorpion’s. It’s face on one side resembled a Doberman’s, on the other was just a bumpy, tumor-like mass. It’s mouth hung open, filled with needle teeth and drooling on the moss with sickly grey. Gabriel watched the tail, assuming it would attack first with that.
He stood still, waiting for the creature to close the distance a little before he attacked, giving his blades a better chance of reaching the neck and stomach. “Lucy, if that creature gets past that large bush by the wall, the one with the tiny dull flowers, you run. Do whatever you can to stay safe, and find one of those crystal orbs.” He reached down slowly into his boot, pulling out a small knife that he set on the moss behind him without looking, before again steadying into a ready stance.
The tail kept swaying above the creatures head, before it bounded forward, the clicking sound beginning again. Gabriel’s boots scraped away the moss, bearing the naked stone underneath as he rushed forward. As he suspected, the tail swung forward first, and he dodged, adjusting the grip on his blades.
“Lucy! Stay out of the way of that tail, whatever you do!”

The beast’s black tail stretched longer than its body and floated over the ground with stunning flexibility. It whipped through the mist again, sending a shower of leaves into the air. A gash was rent through a wall. The Protector glanced back at Lucy with the realization that the tail struck against stone, mere feet from Lucy’s arm.
The Protector began his assault. His knifes glinted in both of his hands, flashes of light, and he fought without a word. He couldn’t make much progress, for the beast swept toward him quickly and took his chance away. It was difficult to find an opening. He hacked at the beast’s flesh and gracefully switched tactics when the need arose. The tail spiraled around them like a deathly whirlpool.
Lucy flinched every time the tail flicked over the Protector. Quick, shallow breaths racked her chest. The man was going to die and he wanted her to run. She wouldn’t run. She wouldn’t be alone for an instant, even if he commanded her.
Don’t be stupid, Lu. She groaned and shook her arms in panic.
Give it up, of course she was stupid. She put her fingers in her mouth and whistled sharply.
The beast shook its head at the irritating sound. Maybe something about Lucy’s helpless figure interested it, because it cocked its head and stared at her for a second, distracted. Its leg muscles rippled and it bounded toward her.
Lucy ran. She imagined a train track ahead of her, golden rods and fluttering insects rising as she raced the sunset toward home. Home, where she could push her face into her mother’s side and listen to the neighbors squabble somewhere below the fire escape.
She hit a wall. The force cracked her back into reality. She pressed her face against the moss and, although she didn’t want to, turned to face the beast.
She stood transfixed. One side of her was fascinated. The beast’s face, so much like a dog’s, was covered in folds and little nodules of flesh. Light shown from its white eyes and through its skin, so the insides shifted visibly like liquid fog. Its veins throbbed and it let out a guttural cry.

Pro tip – if I think KP might glitch, or if my post will be of substantial length, I write it in an email draft. That way I can copy-paste instead of rewrite.

The Protector — Gabriel Mai
“No!” Gabriel shouted as Lucy attracted the beasts attention. As it stood still, he attempted to get at its neck, but its tail lashed out, pinning his body against the wall. He coughed, breath knocked out of him. His back, pressed against the wall, spread with pain, his vision blurring at the edges. When the tail released him, he slumped to the base of the wall, then that clicking sound began again. It was chasing Lucy. He struggled to get up, knees quaking, lungs still trying to bring air into them. When he finally stood, he ran after it, though his movements were slowed. As he ran, he took out his earrings, putting them back in, hoping the stone attracted the beasts of the labyrinth as they attract the beasts of his home. All he could hear was his heart in his ears, and the clicking of the creature as it chased Lucy, with those gurgling voices ever in the background, though they were quieter now.
He saw Lucy hit a wall, turning around to look up at the monster, and the monster slowed its gate, before stopping completely, and letting out a terrible cry.
Gabriel took his chance then. He closed the distance between himself and the creature, and sliced the tail off at the base. It fell, wiggling like a worm on a hook, dark blood staining the moss. He then aimed for the stomach, but the creature turned its head around, needle teeth barely missing snapping down on Gabriel’s arm. Gabriel’s blade, by reflex, sliced into the creature’s eye. It howled in pain. In a split second, the blue rune over Gabriel’s eye turned cherry red, and across his blades veins of the same color spread, reaching the edge, lighting it. Gabriel sliced deeper into its face, the blades burning as they cut. His other blade sliced through the neck at the beginning of the jaw, burying itself halfway. He pulled his blade out of the face, stepping back as the creature’s teeth, in its last act, tried to bite Gabriel’s side. It only snagged his shirt, before the beast crumpled, a bit of torn, dusty fabric in its mouth. As it lay on the ground, Gabriel cut the stomach, ensuring its death.
He looked at Lucy. “Are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?” He sheathed his blades, breathing a little shakily.

Lucy let her breath out and approached. She toed the beast’s foot, jumping back when the claws clicked together. She looked up at the Protector and nodded.
The young man’s chest heaved in exhaustion, but he wasn’t hurt. The rip in his shirt held no trace of blood. He adjusted his grip on his blades and wiped them across the moss wall over their heads, blackberry blood speckling the heather. Lucy’s eyes strayed back to the open flesh strewn over the path.
“That was worse than a play date with the butcher’s daughter.” She giggled and her voice broke. Her knees began to tremble.

I must edit my tip. You will not lose your writing nearly as often. You can still lose it if you write in the email drafts while your wifi isn’t working. …Speaking from recent experience.

The Protector — Gabriel Mai
Gabriel placed a hand on her shoulder, gently, almost timidly, shifting his body to block her view of the beast. “Let’s get away from this thing, I don’t think it’s good for you to be staring at the carcass.”

Lucille
Lucy had seen a dead body before. She almost spoke up to that effect, but found that her teeth were chattering. “I – hm. That is probably correct.”
She awkwardly shuffled around to face away, covered her eyes with one hand, and took the Protector’s hand with the other.

Gabriel led her away, turning a corner. Exhaustion was settling in, causing him to stumble, catching himself before he fell. “Sorry, I wasn’t paying attention.” He released her hand. “It’s out of sight now. Shall we continue searching, or do you need a minute?”

“We should sit.” Lucy would feel better if he didn’t accidentally fall on her. She caught a glimpse of what was ahead and walked faster.
The path widened and turned into something else entirely. The labyrinth cleared around a circular crater in the earth, with rings of stone as steps or seats. It was an empty amphitheater. The sound of steps rung across the space as they approached it. Slender trees curved around the space and grew coin-shaped crimson leaves. The leaves shivered in the wind and bent over the walls that surrounded them.
Lucy ran ahead of her older companion, and slipped off her shoes when she realized they made too much noise. The stone stopped echoing and the wind carried only natural rustles. Some of the tree branches drooped with light red fruit, shining like beads.
Lucy shrugged her jacket off, wiggling her shoulders in freedom. She lay it on the highest stone seat and patted it, looking at the Protector to make sure he would sit on it for a softer rest. She then ran off along the stone edge to climb a tree.

At Lucy’s gesture for him to come sit, an emotion that Gabriel couldn’t describe flooded his chest. He wasn’t sure what it was, but it compelled him to keep her safe, not from duty, but for the sake of doing so. He, as well, slipped off his boots, stepping silently on the stone, sinking into the seat.
He watched her, still warry of this seemingly peaceful place, yet the trees had no vines, and there seemed an absence of them on this side of the walls. Only ivy hung there, which swayed and parted with the wind. But despite his wariness, he felt his body giving into sleep, his eyes closing before he forced them open again. Eventually, he slumped over the side of the seat, mask shifting onto the side of his head as sleep embraced him. The gurgled voices that he had heard that entire day silenced.
Whatever you want to do from here is fine with me. We probably should have Lucy do some stuff from here, then skip to whenever Gabriel wakes up, however long or short that is. Idk.

Cool. I’ll go through some character actions Gabriel doesn’t necessarily have to be present for.

It was easier to reach the trees from the wall. Lucy hiked up her trousers and placed a foot on a protruding root. She swiftly climbed up the wall and crouched on the top. The mist fell away, although the sky remained a bright, sharp gray. The sun, a blurred disk, lay on the horizon. Walls and rolls of twisted plant life sprawled for miles around.
Lucy almost fell off when she stood up, but stubbornly bit her lip and skipped to the nearest treetop. She was already high enough to reach a solid branch and step over. The fruit glowed light red and streaked with pink, like apples, but they swelled when she pinched them off the branch. She spent a fair bit of time licking the juice off her fingers, wary of wiping them on her clothes and getting everything sticky.
It felt good to eat something. She had ignored her stomach for a long time; the first bite made her insides ache, but after that, it tasted better than any garden food she had eaten in a while.
She picked some of the tree flowers, remembering the young man had mentioned flowers three times. Her shirt worked as a basket, but the juice would make a mess. She held as many of the liquid apples in one hand and awkwardly dropped off the wall.
The Fifth Protector lay sound asleep. He had Lucy’s jacket for a pillow. He made no sound, although his knives were in a good position and he seemed ready to wake up any moment. Lucy set the flowers and fruit beside him. She had accidentally used the hand she licked, but he probably couldn’t notice.
He wasn’t as old as her father, but old enough to drink. His red hair stood out from anyone else Lucy had seen before, and he had no visual credentials to speak of – besides the indecipherable decorations on his mask. Those looked more like art than words. His shirt had no symbol and his hands were smoother than those of men Lucy knew. Perhaps he came from farther outside the city, perhaps even the unposted silos.
Lucy tugged absently at her collar. Something caught her eye; a wallet had fallen from her jacket pocket and lay on the stone.
It was a photo album. She flipped through it quickly. One of the photos, a smiling man, distracted her and she found herself staring at it for longer than the others.
The last sleeve held a photo of her and her parents. Lucy started; she looked around her, suddenly conscious of how many places someone could hide and watch her. She crossed her arms, listening to the breeze as if someone might accidentally whisper too loud and alert her.
This person, the owner of the album, must have stalked the family and kidnapped her. That had to be the answer. Without anything else to go by, Lucy had to swallow her pride and admit she must be stupid enough to be kidnapped. She was lost now.
