      Imagine stumbling upon a website that calls itself Kingdom Pen. Imagine pausing, letting your eyes linger on the name – It’s beautiful, you think.

      Imagine delving into the wonders of the wealth of knowledge that lay in the articles, of spending hours pouring over different tips and tricks and coming back again and again to learn more of how to hone your writing craft.

      Imagine discovering the forum but forgetting to request access, letting joining this community drift to the bottom of the many things you had to do.

      Just imagine.

      And now you’re here. Finally. Your fingers hesitate above the keyboard – where to begin? How to introduce yourself?

      You pause, letting your eyes wander over the books stacked in every spare cranny of your room. You feel something light up in the back of your eyes – of course. There it is. Books would be an excellent start.

      But even that is such a broad topic. You could talk about the first memories you have of bending over books with your mom as you tried to spell out the words. You could describe the ecstasy you felt as you checked out your first book – your very own book– from the library.

      You could mention how the love of stories blurred the line between reading and writing, talk about how both came as naturally as air. You could recall the hours it spent to finish your first work. . . and then your second. . . and so on.

      Ah, but that would only be books. There is so much more – there is wind, and stars, and mugs of hot chocolate and bedtime stories to read to little ones. There’s the smell of fresh pencils, the musty scent of old books, the curious way the shadows dance at first dark. There is whimsical fancy, Neverland, and make believe.

      Can you imagine that?

      If you can, then you may be well on your way to understanding this girl, with her head full of dreams and her arms full of books. But even then you wouldn’t fully understand her – can anyone truly understand someone else? You wouldn’t have seen the way her eyes light up when books enter the conversation, you wouldn’t have heard her laugh in the afternoon for the pure joy of being alive, of seeing the sun and hearing voices.

      Well, it’s a start, I suppose. Oh, but where are my manners? How can you imagine this girl, truly, without her name?

      This must be remedied.

      *glances up from books and smiles* Hello, writers. My name is Karissa – and I am thrilled to meet you. ✨♥️

        Imagine a girl somewhere between 14 – 18 years of age, somewhere between this world and a million others. Someone for whom “reality” is curiously like a mirror, reflecting a reality even more real and dangerous and beautiful than itself.

        You might end up with me.

        (Someone who loves the way you opened up your introduction. Seriously, that was lovely.)

        So, hi! Welcome to KP.

        As you might know, it is the custom 😉 to ask a new comer several random questions to get to know them. Where shall we start?

        Do you have a WIP? If so, who is your favorite character in it?

        What genre(s) do you write? What do like about it?

        Who are your favorite authors?

          (Aww, thank you! ♥️)

          Ah, but of course. *settles down and pulls out pen* Fire away.

          I do indeed have a WIP – scheduled to be finished (first draft, anyhow) by the end of January. My favorite character is likely either Evren or L, for very different reasons. 😛

          I write character-driven speculative fiction, and I love the grandeur of possibility that I have – I can create worlds and cultures and histories, and throw in new ways, different ways of making things that can pull people out of this world and take away all the context and make them look at familiar things in a whole new way. And I can have fun with it, by daydreaming about my worlds and brainstorming inventions and getting to spend time just following the what-ifs as far as they lead.

          Okay, that was rambling. 😂 Apologies.

          And as for my favorite authors. . . gah. This is such a hard question. Let me see if I can answer it in any degree of brevity. . .

          Kara Swanson, Andrew Peterson, Jonathan Auxier, Robin McKinley, Neil Gaiman, P. S. Broaddus, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Jenelle Leanne Schmidt, J. M. Barrie, Francess Hodgson Burnett, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Louisa May Alcott, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Marjorie Holmes, Dorothy L. Sayers. . . so many. Wow. And I feel like I haven’t even said all that many yet. XD

            (Your welcome! ❤️)

            Oooh, the first draft will be done soon? That’s so exciting! (I hope to have two of mine plotted out by the end of this month. The first books in two separate series.)

            Evren or L, you say? Those are fascinating names. What are these different reasons? (If it’s shareable. I understand if not.)

            Rambling is fun! I’ve been guilty of rambling on near-endlessly about my book ideas, so… 🙃 Your genre sounds intriguing. I love character-driven stuff, as it’s just so good!

            It is very hard sometimes to choose favorite authors. And then after looking at the list, I wonder how well-read I actually am.

            Anyway, 🙂 we share a bunch of favorite authors, namely, Andrew Peterson, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Francess Hodgson Burnett, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Louisa May Alcott, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. (Beware, there are some “heated” debates about Wingfeather on here. 😉 😂)

            I did go through and list all my favorite authors (that I could remember at the time) on my profile. It was…lengthy. Very lengthy.

              Hi! It is so nice to meet you! My name is Annabelle, and I love to read, write, draw, play the piano, sew, and do lots of other things! I also post on my blog, https://annabelle.batie.com, once every Monday, if you’re interested.

              Wow, your introduction was AMAZING! It captured my attention right away.

              Your WIP sounds very interesting! What is it titled?

              I have heard of many of those authors, and Andrew Peterson is my all-time favorite. Have you read his Wingfeather Saga book series?

              What are some of your favorite movies/TV series? I like The Chronicles of Narnia movies (although the books are still better by far), The Ultimate Gift (though I haven’t watched it in forever), and When Calls the Heart Hallmark series.

              Well, anyway, welcome to Kingdom Pen, and I’ll see you around the forums!

                *Deep curtsey*

                Hello, I am Koshka, a somewhat prolific, if cautious, devourer of books, historical enthusiast, and general homeschooler. I write Medieval Fantasy, sometimes historical fiction, and a smattering of poetry. I also like to draw (when I have time) and talk about books (if I can find someone to listen).

                Ooo, I love world building, even when I’ll never do anything with that world, and character driven stories are some of my favorite.

                As you have already shared some of your favorite authors, I shall share some of mine; C. S. Lewis, Andrew Peterson, George MacDonald, S. D. Smith, Howard Pyle, Jane Austen, Gail Carson Levine, Chuck Black’s Arethtrea series (however that’s spelled), Francess Hodgson Burnett, and a bunch of others I can’t think of right now.

                And a question; Do you like jellybeans?

I am Power… and I must admit I am kinda annoyed at you at present. I’m speechless. I don’t like being speechless.  I’ll be back later when I can come up with some witty and errr… (Speechless 😾 How did you do that!!)

                  You will love what you spend time with.

                    @elishavet-pidyon

                    Yep! It’s very exciting! And that sounds awesome – have you written any series before?

                    Aw, thank you. The different reasons. . . hm. Evren has so much of me in her – the dreams, the love of stories, the things she’s drawn to. . . it’s been really interesting to explore that part of my personality through her. And L (who refuses to tell the other characters – and, by extension, me – what his full name is) is just so witty and clever that his banter his hilarious to write. 😂

                    Ooh, glad to hear we share some favorite authors. And, yes, there are just so many to name! XD

                    @annabelle

                    Lovely to meet you! Did you recently join the Young Writer’s Workshop? I think I’ve seen you around there. 🙃

                    Aw, thank you very much!

                    The working title is Flame’s Dust, though that’s subject to change at some point. What’s your current WIP called?

                    Indeed I have! We don’t own all the books yet, but I’ve managed to borrow them from my neighbors long enough to get through the series. 😋

                    Mmmmmm, good question. I like a lot of different kinds of movies – classics like Beauty and the Beast and more modern ones like Master and Commander. . . I’m not entirely sure. I’ve never actually thought about that for terribly long. . .

                    @koshka

                    Ooh, a pleasure to meet you. *curtsies* Favorite time period?

                    Yessss, worldbulding and character-driven stories are so lovely – and complement each other very well, in my experience. XP

                    Aw, I should have mentioned S. D. Smith – knew I would forget some. The Green Ember series is awesome – favorite character?

                    Aha, indeed I do. ‘Tis been a while since I’ve had any due to the country I live in, but I definitely enjoyed them when we were back in the States.

                      @karissa-chmil

                      Thanks! and no, I haven’t written a series or a novel for that matter (I have attempted novels but couldn’t get them to tell me their plots. Finally, I have found some more honest books. Hopefully.).

                      Have you written any series and/or novels?

                      Evren and L sound like fun characters! I once tried to base a character off myself, but I worked in all the wrong parts of my personality, which meant my character didn’t make sense. It was amusing, but I have let the character decide on her own personality since then. XD

                      L won’t tell you his name? Hmmm intriguing. 🙂

                      By the way, you like S. D. Smith’s Green Ember series? Then we share another favorite author. 😉

                        @karissa-chmil

                        For writing, I prefer researching earlier centuries such as the 9th-15th. Once firearms enter the scene I lose much of my interest. However, I do like researching and recreating clothing from the Victorian age.

                        Helmer, Whitby, Harmony and Wilfred. I do like the MCs, especially Heather, but some of those side characters are intriguing. Helmer is just awesome, Whitby seems very like Smalls in the first book, and Harmony and Wilfred have always sort of captured my imagination. What about you?

                        If you could have any animal whether real or otherwise as a pet, what would it be?

                          @elishavet-pidyon

                          Hah, those novels can be so stubborn in that regard sometimes. XP Best of luck with this one!

                          Series, no; novels, yes. I’m planning on writing a duology this year, which will be my first time writing anything that really builds on itself. I’m quite excited for it. 😁

                          XD Yeah, that’s always a pitfall that can be too easy to slide into. I rarely (if ever) sit down and decide to base a character off of myself, but I love exploring different aspects of myself by imagining what it would be like if that was my main characteristic, or if it didn’t have that countering it, etc. . .

                          That’s one word for it. 😛

                          Ooh, lovely. Since this seems to be the question of the day as far as the Green Ember goes, do you have a favorite character?

                          @koshka

                          Aw, that’s lovely. And I sympathize with the lack of interest once firearms enter the picture. 😂

                          Yessssss, those side characters are fantastic. And Helmer is amazing. Hm, as for me. . . very good question. Definitely love both of the MCs, and then Smalls, Helmer, and Emma (though she’s kind of an MC in the last book) are awesome too.

                          Ooh, difficult questions. I’d say dragons but that doesn’t strike me as a pet sort of animal. . . I’m going to go with this dragon-ish lizard creature (its name literally has the word “dragon” in it) because they’re awesome, and I’ve never been so tempted to steal something from my best friend’s house before. XD

                          How about you?

                            Ugh, yes. That is one sad thing about being American; we never had much of a medieval age. Of course, we also never had Roman occupation so there is that. =]

                            Ah yes Emma. (How did I forget about her?) She does become a side MC in the last book. S. D. Smith did a good job with his characters.

                            Hmm, I think I would also like a dragon, just the type on the Royal Seal of Anniera. If I had the space (in other words a personal sea). Or maybe a wolf, or an Icelandic Falcon. In fact, any type of falcon, hawk, eagle, or kite would be fine with me. XD

                              Indeed he did.

                                So, my signature is sort of a joke. Literally translated it means: “I speak English. Glorify God!” (Or thank God as the context here implies).

                                  Ok, sorry it’s taken a while for me to respond. Every time I’d sit down to write my reply, something (or most likely somebody) would call me away. Ugh!

                                  Anyway, I’m back. (And it wasn’t too long of an absence)

                                  Yes, they can be very stubborn, and thanks!

                                  Oooh, a duology does sound fun. And that is really exciting! One of my series is a trilogy, and the other one might be one too, but it’s at least a duology. They’re both just way too complicated for only one book. XD

                                  Hmm, I should try working in characteristics that way. Then, maybe I do, but I just don’t realize it. (We may never know…)

                                  Who is my favorite Natalian character? That’s really hard to decide, like ice cream or cheesecake hard. 😉 So I’ll try the next right thing and attempt to pick a few.

                                  Then I’ll realize I forgot someone. Oh well.

                                  I love Heather and Picket (of course), but also Lalo, Emma, Whitbie Helmer, Kylen and Nylen(even though they can make me furious, [I might have cried when the REAL traitor was discovered. Which is somewhat rare.]), Smalls, and Wilfred, Jo… AND Lander and Massie!

                                  (There, I think I did it. Maybe.)

                                  You have listened to fears, child. Come, let me breathe on you... Are you brave again? -Aslan
