Hello everyone! I was wondering if anyone who has written a book and gotten it published has any advice for an aspiring teenage writer who has no idea whatsoever what she is doing?

      Thank you. Aislinn out!

I… am completely clueless about this. But, I know there are a couple of folks on here have gotten their stories published. Probably more, but I can only think of a couple. I shall now tag them: @daeus @hope

@aislinn-mollisong I’m self-published and know a bit about traditional publishing. Do you have any specific questions?

@daeus I would like to get my book series traditionally published, but I don’t know what even to do. I literally know nothing about the process, or what I do to get my books to a publisher, or really anything related to the subject. I am a LONG way from getting published (I just started the second chapter of the first book today) but I would really like to at least have an idea of what I’m doing.

@Aislinn-Mollisong Long post coming up, sorry. xD

The basic process of being published varies greatly with what publisher you go with and whether or not you have an agent.
If you’re going for traditional publishing, you’ll have to do a lot of research on publishing houses/agencies that would accept your writing. It’s literally a process of googling things like ‘publishers that will accept unsolicited manuscripts’ or if you’re looking for a literary agent instead ‘literary agents accepting new authors.’ You’ll also need to evaluate what sort of book you’re writing. Is it explicitly christian? Is it implicit? What genre? – Different agents and publishers have different guidelines and genres they like. A lot of publishers are more likely to reject explicitly christian manuscripts but there are also really good places (Enclave, for example) who are looking for Christian books.

Putting all that aside, I would suggest that right now you just aim toward ‘publishing’ rather than detailed ‘this specific publisher.’ Just focus on getting your book finished, edited, edited by friends, get a professional edit. Make it as good as humanly possible for you before going on a hunt for a specific publisher or agent.

If there’s anything else I can help with just tag me! 😀

@Aislinn-Mollisong Yeah, what Jane said. I’ll just clarify that an agent is someone who represents you to different publishing houses. So instead of you convincing a publisher to publish your book, you convince an agent and he convinces the publisher. Generally speaking, having an agent makes you more likely to get accepted by a publisher. My understanding is that it depends largely on the publishing house. Some publishers don’t care if you have an agent whereas some won’t publish you without one. Keep studying this. Understanding the business of writing is really important if you want to get published.
