Hey!
So in my WIP, I have this creature that needs a name. They live underground in caves.
I picture them as a cross between Ridgerunners, Oompa Loompas, and squirrels. They’re about fourish feet tall.
They’re also slightly evil.
If any artists want to draw them, I’d love to see it!

Do they have tails (you mentioned squirrels)? Are they more like people or animals? How many syllables or words do you want?
A few random ideas (and if any of these are already used it was accidental): Quirgles, Akturns, Miklins, Thindles, Prats, Hurpies, Gorfs, Kelops, Twindles, Zlooffs.

Fork the GorkDecember 15, 2022 at 11:36 am #124552@koshka ahhh I love those names!! How are you so good at this?! I’m definitely going to tag u if I end up making a world building forum which I probably will because..I’ve been thinking I really need to do some world building because I am LITERALLY building a WORLD…
(not a land…a world….like earth….yeaaa heh)
help me XDALSO
@starofthenorth so what I usually do when trying to name races, species, etc is I take words relating to them, or what they’re based on, so in this example the words might be Squirrel, Small, Dark, Sinister, whatever you associate with them, even fluffy lol!And I translate those words into a different language (my go to language is Latin, but if that language word is too similar to the English word I try a different language)
Then I take that word or multiple of those translated words and I mix the letters, or combine the words and start saying random “names” out loud until I find things I like.
It sounds a bit odd but it’s honestly helped me a lot and made me feel really pleased when I finally find a name I love!
Some things I’ve named from my own works are:
My mermaid kingdom: Isylren
My Dryad Kingdom: Ligithiim
A creature I made: Doclashrüm/Oclashrüm
And the name of Ara’s home is literally just the word Garden with the letters mixed up: A’Grend, XD.

That’s a cool way to do it. I’d love to try fantasy sometime but rn my main stories are Sci-fi and thriller genres (not mixed 😉) so I can’t really help you but thanks for tagging me just the same. I’m mixing Contemporary into both my stories so they’re all human and have normal American and sometimes Bible names.
December 15, 2022 at 12:50 pm #124585Ah…I don’t know? For creature name I guess I usually just start with a letter, say it out loud, and see what sound comes next.
For place and group names I tend to look up words in the language of that culture and, then if there is more than one word, mash them together till I like the sound. So basically what you do.
Volkovia [Slavic kingdom] = land of wolves.
Lasair [Gaelic tribe]= flame.
Eintrachtam [Anglo/German kingdom] = hills of hope.

December 15, 2022 at 4:47 pm #124650Alright. This is what I’ve got.
I totally agree with Godly. What I do is look up words relating to what I’m trying to name in an obscure language, or just a different language, mixing up letters or parts of words.
For example, in my WIP, my country’s name is Themelios. (Though it may change 😅) Themelios means “foundation” in Greek, a word that I believe is used in the Bible. (Before it was translated, of course) The meaning had importance, which will be revealed later on.
So depending on if this animal is important or not, maybe pick a name with meaning, relating to its role later in the story.
Here are some things I looked up: (yeah… it’s not much)
- CRINITUS — Latin, fluffy
- inepta — Latin, silly
- troktikó — Greek, rodent
And to combine those words…:
- crinitoke
- trokticrin (this one sounds poisonous XD) (and hard to pronounce)
- ineptacrin (this one kinda sounds like a medicine)
- crintiko
Hopefully this helped!

Thanks for all your suggestions! I will most likely use one of them but I haven’t had the time to think through them all yet 😊
I never really thought about using Latin names before, but it seems that’s what a lot of you guys do! Latin is great.
