Hi all! I’m Rachel Lester…and for some reason I decided my username on this forum should be my blog name. I really wasn’t thinking it through…
I write. Books. My current series is about superheroes (my obsession may or may not have begun after my friend ‘kindly’ introduced me to The Avengers so many years ago).
I was homeschooled for quite a few years (being of quiet disposition, I was always meant to be a homeschooler. Too bad I started in seventh grade).
I’m an Army ‘brat’ (believe me, I’ve come /many/ years from being a brat. *shudders to think about childhood years…and then early teen years…*) but I have a unique set up. I’ve been to so many places and I’ve met so many people because of what my dad does. It’s been a blessing. And though I sin every day, I am redeemed by Jesus Christ. And that fact is amazing.
August 11, 2015 at 9:28 am #4181Hi, Rachel! Welcome to the forum!
August 12, 2015 at 8:28 am #4207Thank you, Sarah! π
August 12, 2015 at 9:44 am #4215What kind of animals do you have?
Just wondering. πAugust 12, 2015 at 11:47 am #4220I just have two dogs. One is a beagle named Gracie Lou and the other is a dachshund named Pippin. π Do you have animals?
August 12, 2015 at 2:26 pm #4224Yes; I have five cockatiels. They are some of the best pets ever.
What is your favorite book genre? Mine is historical fiction.August 12, 2015 at 4:53 pm #4227Oh cool! What are their names?
Hmm…favorite genre. I’d have to say I’m leaning towards historical fiction as well. I love me some Julie Klassen books.
But as far as writing goes…that’s widespread.August 12, 2015 at 6:06 pm #4235The father’s name is Davy, and the chicks are Sparrow, Kestrel, Osprey, and Elisa. Their mother Elsie died a few years ago. π
I’ve never read Julie Klassen’s books. What time period are they set in?August 12, 2015 at 6:09 pm #4236Oh, by the way… What does hujambo mean?
August 12, 2015 at 6:26 pm #4239Aww more Elsie. π I’ve never owned a bird! We’ve had dogs, a cat, a gomdfiah, a mouse, and two turtles over my years.
Klassen’s books are set around the same time as Jane Austrn’s. So the Regrncy eraish. They are so good. My favorite is The Apothecary’s Daughter.
Hujambo is hello in Swahili! πAugust 12, 2015 at 7:22 pm #4241Cool! Do you know any other words in Swahili?
Thanks for telling me about the Julie Klassen books. I will try to find them.August 12, 2015 at 10:17 pm #4243Ollo person. Welcome to the place.
August 13, 2015 at 11:41 am #4258Sarah, I’ve been working on teaching myself Swahili over the last year, but I haven’t practiced a whole lot this summer. I can say ‘Hello, my name is Rachel’, a variety of colors, good morning/good night, hello, goodbye, and random vocabulary words. So not very many sentences or questions yet.
Yes! I definitely recommend her books! Her older ones are some of her best work. My top three are: The Girl in the Gatehouse, The Tutor’s Daughter, and The Apothecary’s Daughter. What are your favorite books?
Ollo, Daniel!
August 13, 2015 at 12:52 pm #4263Wow! Teaching yourself a foreign language is quite an accomplishment. I’m trying to teach myself Hebrew, but it sounds like you are far ahead of me! π Isn’t Swahili an African language? What alphabet does it use?
Thanks; I will be on the lookout for them.
Hm… I have a lot of favorites, but the ones that come to mind right now are Frank Peretti’s novels ‘This Present Darkness’ and ‘Piercing the Darkness’, Bodie Thoene’s series ‘The Zion Covenant’ and ‘The Zion Chronicles’ (although I wish they had less romance in them), and Jules Verne’s books ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea’, ‘Journey To the Center of the Earth’, and ‘Michael Strogoff’.
What are your favorites?August 13, 2015 at 9:44 pm #4313If only it could be said I accomplished much… I really need to practice. Yup, Swahili is an African language. It’s spoken in several countries. They use the English alphabet. The cool thing is, this week my family is helping with VBS and the theme is ‘Camp Kilimanjaro’. Mt. Kilimanjaro is in Tanzania, which is a Swahili-speaking country. Well, you know, the country doesn’t speak Swahili, but the people do. At least the majority. π But it’s cool because I got to teach the kids some Swahili. And we have a helper who is from Rwanda and his first language is Swahili…so that’s kind of neat.
I’ve heard of a lot of those books! My mom has the Thoene books. I tried reading them years ago, but I didn’t get very far. They were intense.
My favorites…oh goodness.
In no particular order of favoriteness (yes, I realize that isn’t a word), but lists help me think better.
1. The Apothecary’s Daughter by Julie Klassen
2. The Children of HΓΊrin by JRR Tolkien
3. Orphan’s Song by Gillian Bronte Adams
4. The Giver series by Lois Lowry
5. THE BOOK THIEF by Markus Zusak
6. Anne of Green Gables books (although I still have to read /all/ of them)
7. Pride and Prejudice
8. Emma
I’m sure there’s more, but I’m tired and don’t want to try to remember. π -
