My latest WIP is a mix of spy/mystery… I think. Anyway, a bit of background for y’all, it’s about a young lady, age 16 who has turned bitter against her dad because of their circumstances they live in now.
(two years prior to where I pick up the story, they were living in a super expensive house near a nice, big city and went to a public school there. Her dad suddenly decided to pull up roots from that city and move to a pokey town in western Oklahoma, where the protagonist and her younger sister would be homeschooled. As they are packing their moving truck, her mom is shot and killed, leaving her dad, sister and her to move on to the little Ok. town) wow that was long!
So two years down the road, we find a bitter protagonist in a tiny apartment, trying to take care of the home and her little sister as her dad is always gone at his “job” which embitters her even more, cause her dad says for her safety, he can’t tell her where he “works”.
(sorry this is a lot to throw at y’all all at once!)
Her younger sister is then kidnapped and the protagonist is taken by her cousin to the U.C.I. headquarters (Underground Criminal Investigation) which is located under an abandoned hotel and no one outside of their team members know about.

Okay all that to get to the part where I need some brainstorming help!
The U.C.I. is a very futuristic team that creates some of their own technology gadgets to help their team in their investigation. I need some ideas.
What kind of gadgets would you like to use in order to chase/find/obtain dangerous criminals if you have endless technology experts helping you create them?
Some ideas my sister helped me with are things like, gecko gloves that allow you to climb the side of a slick building, watches that act like walkie talkies, shoes that sense a certain set of footprints and help you track their trail.
Oh and if you have some ideas for technology a team like the U.C.I. might use at their headquarters, I’d love some more ideas for that! (things like for their security purposes, such as they use fingerprint recognition to unlock doors, or touchscreen on their walls)

Any thoughts would be welcome! I want lots of cool gadgets in this project!

Um… maybe some sort of infrared vision goggles? Something like the Navy Seals have (at least I think it’s the Navy Seals)— the goggles that detect body heat and send back images through walls based solely on the heat they’re picking up. That could be cool.

Small pen guns are cool. And I always love the concealed weapons in sleeves and such. Hmm, there could be things that look like perfume except if it’s inhaled it will put the enemy to sleep. There can also be cameras on buttons or pens in a person’s pocket. Or there can be other tiny cameras planted around (or even trackers planted on the criminal’s clothes). Some sort of ear-piece would be a must so you could hear what’s going on. And there’s the eye contacts that can identify people or copy something (yes, I’m thinking about Mission Impossible).

First of all, walkie talkie watches are not that hi tech. The apple watch is basically that plus the iPhone. I would suggest hologram computers. Check out the topic “futuristic weapons” if you haven’t yet. Gecko gloves sound cool, but how would you keep them from falling off? I could see the boot things, but I think a metal detector looking thing only that reads smell instead of metal would look seem more natural.

My guess is that these guys are going to be some serious hackers. You might want to do a little research on hacking. I think it would be cool if they had a little microscopic robot that could crawl into a computer and read its hard drive (and make modifications if necessary) and then send data back to the UCI – if that’s possible. I’m pretty sure it would be, only complicated.

            I might say more later.

I’m absolutely terrible at thinking up futuristic gadgets but I just wanted to say that this book sounds amazing! 🙂

Well, you know there are those things that will focus in on sounds even miles away so you can literally be sitting on your front porch and hear what your neighbor is saying even though you normally couldn’t hear him even if he was shouting. I imagine such people would use those even if they aren’t very futuristic.

Also, when I think of futuristic stuff, I think of lots of cameras. Very tiny but high quality cameras that can be stuck in corners of rooms or flown around on tiny drones (or drones that look like animals).

                      My brother has some ideas:
Okay, how about a fleet of octacopter/quadrocopter spy drones linked via satellite or wireless hub to the detectives’ phone or watch. These drones could carry infrared/ultraviolet sensitive cameras, that are capable of spying into the cafeteria of a ten story building, or special multi-gigapixel cameras (that could zoom in on an ant’s face half a mile away!). These drones, once linked to the detectives phones or watches could transmit data or pictures to the good guys glasses (love that alliteration). These glasses could be equipped with liquid crystal displays built into the glass. This display could easily be looked through as liquid crystals are clear. One of you mentioned holography. A hologram is made by the interference between monochromatic ( laser) light beams. That may be an eyeful, but hard as it may be to believe, an entire computer with a holographic display could technically be built into a device the size of a credit card! I personally plan to prodoce this machine under the name Iflex. you can use the name if you like. Micro machines can be built in the same way.
About hacking. One special hacking system is to write a software program, write it into an app or email, and put on the internet or app stores. Once installed in a victims computer, this secret software could steal info, rewrite a computers file/ software structure and destroy a computer.
On boots. A computer and gps system also connectable to the glasses could be built into the sole or heel of the boot. Tinted glass on the outside of the glasses could turn infrared light into visible green light on the inside of the glasses. The infrared light source could be provided by a hidden flashlight in the shield of a baseball cap. Hence night vision goggles with only a hat and sunglasses! The drones could also carry packages of food and supplies to the detectives anywhere in the world! The glasses could be controlled by selectively blinking one eye or the other. Also, a shirt could be a audio recorder. For more info or details just contact my sister. (All aforementioned ideas are perfectly scientific and practical, not fantasy.

@sarah-h Those are some great ideas. And you said “I personally plan to prodoce this machine under the name Iflex.” Seriously? Do you have the skills to do that? Wow. Impressive. I’d love to get one of those.

I thought I’d just say a couple things. First of all, if these guys have drone cameras connected to their phones, they are going to have to be a really good with cyber security. Reason is, if they aren’t stopped, somebody else could hack into their phones and steal all their data or at least hack into their cameras. If the drone flies back to one of their bases than the hacker could see the location through the camera and track them down.

Also, just thought I’d mention that what you said about hacking is perfectly true, but it gets a little more complicated. First of all, if you submit a virus in an app, (if it is an apple app) it will be checked before it is put on the market. Some people have managed to get by the system but that is very rare. Android – eh, viruses could be anywhere. Also, just because you put a virus in some software on a website or something, doesn’t mean it will do anything. There are some very good virus (and everything else under the sun that you don’t want on your computer) protection devices. None of them are perfect, but some are very very close. That’s why I think it would be cool to have a micro robot that could physically crawl into a computer and implant a virus, malware, etc on the hard rive, because that couldn’t be stopped by any device I know of.

I also had this idea for some sort of wrist device that could launch some super powerful suction, gripping, (other?) device that could basically grip onto anything. Then, with the press of another button, the device will reel in at an astounding speed, shooting the guy up into the air. This would be great for breaking into buildings or making escapes.

@sarah-h Those are some wonderful ideas. Do you (or your brother) have any other thoughts on futuristic technology for the ‘Futuristic Weapons’ thread? 😉

WOW! Thanks guys for all your fantastic ideas! You have my thought juices flowing here. I like how y’all are helping me think about what is practical and what isn’t. (that’s good for me cause usually I just shrug and write about something that isn’t practical anyway 🙂

Alrighty, so hacking… yes. Good idea. I think I shall plan on getting some ideas about that from my brother’s friends. hehehe.
Hmmm… a little drone that sneaks into the enemy computer systems. I like that. Actually I watched a show in which that happened! So most drones are thought of as flying, crawling devices, but do you think I could practically get them to dig/drill themselves into the ground?

                            @daeus
what if the gecko gloves were rubbery and clasped about your wrist like a watch? Real live geckos climb slick surfaces by electrical currants that God amazingly gave them on their feet. When they press their feet against a surface the electrical currant is “on” (for lack of a better word) and when they wish to move, their feet peel off the surface like a sticker being removed from a slick surface. Obviously to climb the side of a building with this invention, you’d also need something on your feet. I suggested a sock like item to pull over your feet, but my sister thinks it should look more like a shoe 🙂 any suggestions?

@ sarah I love those ideas. They definitely need some night vision goggles and gps system on their boots!

Hahaha about the fly drone! I watched a movie in which an inventor invented a million dollar fly drone only then to let a kid fly it around for about two minutes when someone smacked it to pieces!

When I read the suction cup idea, I immediately thought of Larry Boy off Veggies Tales! That’s be super cool!

Okay, so if I didn’t use watches as a communicating device, what else could I use?

Thanks to everyone for your help! I’m very inspired!

For communication, you could have some sort of skin colored patch, like a small circle sticker, that could fit in a persons ear and be practically invisible. That could be good for incoming communication anyway. For outgoing you could either have small microphones on a shirt, or maybe even something that melds into the skin of the hand or face so it’s invisible but picks up all sound (I saw something like that in a science fiction show once).

Yes, that is exactly what I was thinking of. Saw that too.

And the gecko gloves: Having boots would really help. Straps could keep the gloves on but what I am thinking is that if you only had gloves it would put a tremendous strain on your wrists.

What if you had gloves that came up to your elbow; tight, skin-fitting type gloves so you could use your whole lower arm?
