OKAY. So here’s the main thing: My main character began high and ended low through a convolution of different character arcs hitting against each other and running into conflict. Through many events and many terrible things that happen to the antagonist, the main character attempts to end the antagonist’s life. Both these characters’ arcs are heavily intertwined, thus making their conflict that much more potent. I really pity my antagonist, but his way of thinking isn’t right, and in the end, it really began with sin.
That’s for my fantasy novel. There are, of course, many characters, and I’ve estimated that the final book will be somewhere around 1,777 pages with somewhere around 900,000 words, which is TOTALLY unrealistic. I may end up splitting it either into two books or three. We’ll see.
May 21, 2020 at 7:43 am #82222@devastate-lasting 你好! 我真的很高兴发现这个地方有另外一个华人! 😀
I’m hailing from Taiwan, so about 20% of the simplified Chinese above is impossible for me to read… but thanks Google Translate 😛
Anyways, even though I’m about 11 pages late, it’s great to meet you! I’m an INFJ and also a student. I think it’s super cool that you’re writing some in Chinese, and I was wondering what your Chinese WIPs would be about, or is it currently a part of your magic users/Crown Prince world?
One of my current WIPs actually has a setting based off of Dream of the Red Chamber红楼梦… I don’t know if you’ve heard of it or even actually read it. I read a summary-book of it in a Chinese class a couple of years back, and then a few months later my secret societies WIP met Chinese nobility, and the rest is history.

My Chinese WIPs are very loosely related to my Magic User world. Essentially the ones I have a clearer idea around focus on some of my Chinese Magic Users and their life in Beijing or other parts of China. Essentially I want to write a bit of urban fantasy for them. I also had this idea of writing a series about spirits on the moon, but that has yet to be fleshed out.
Oh yeah I have heard of 红楼梦! My mother had me listen to one of those things where the person talking basically sums up each chapter rather than reading it… I’d love to hear more about your WIP! I think that the Chinese nobility/setting place thing is a really cool thing and could be used for a lot of cool stories.
@leon-fleming That is really long. I want to know more about your protagonist/antagonist. What’s their relationship?
Lately, it's been on my brain
Would you mind letting me know
If hours don't turn into daysMay 21, 2020 at 7:21 pm #82253@devastate-lasting Well, they aren’t related through blood; just story mainly. They are aelfven by birth and are brought together through a lot of events into a position where the origins for the story take place. Aelfven are similar to elves, but definitively different in many ways. The beginning of the story begins with what I’m calling The Preliminary. This takes place some years before chapter one and the following chapters. The Preliminary sets up the beginning and so on and so forth.
May 21, 2020 at 7:24 pm #82255@leon-fleming Ooooh. That sounds extremely complex. How much worldbuilding would you say that you have done as of compared to JRR Tolkien?

If hours don't turn into daysMay 21, 2020 at 7:27 pm #82256@devastate-lasting I don’t really know, since Tolkien did a remarkable amount of world-building throughout his life, and I’m still in the teens. XD But, compared to him at my age and his age at my age, I’ve most likely done more in different areas than he did, but he most likely did more work on his languages. I’m planning to work a lot more on those…want to know about one of them? That’s kinda new?
May 21, 2020 at 8:06 pm #82267@leon-fleming That’s really cool! Sure, release your knowledge.
Also, @selah-chelyah What about your MCs?

May 22, 2020 at 9:10 pm #82301@devastate-lasting Okay; so I’ve been working on several aelfic languages, but almost none of them looked like I wanted them to look. I wanted them similar to Tolkien’s, but only in their look. I wanted them to look ancient, connected, fictional, intriguing, cursive-like, and flowish at the same time. Well, I finally started something that looks like I want it to look. It’s aelfic, of course, but it doesn’t fit into the structure of the original three; you see, those three were the pure aelfic tongues that were passed down through the years and are still in their original form in the current time that my fantasy novel takes place. They are pure because they (for the most part) are unchanged from their original forms. They were kept this way purposefully. Well, this new language will probably be the best of all of them, but I don’t know where to fit it in!
@selah-chelyah Thanks! Yeah, what about your MCs? (I’m really sorry about the beta-reading, but some inevitable things have popped up and I couldn’t read it. I’ll try as soon as I can.) I REALLY WANT TO READ THOSE CHAPTERS!!May 23, 2020 at 10:41 am #82314@leon-fleming Wow. How are you planning on typing it out?

If hours don't turn into daysMay 23, 2020 at 10:47 am #82315@devastate-lasting *looks up genre of urban fantasy* That’s super cool! Would your entire Magic User World be classified as urban fantasy/contemporary fantasy then?
I think that writing in Chinese definitely would be fitting for a setting in Beijing. There’s a book called Want by Cindy Pon which is set in Taipei, and although she does a great job of the setting, trying to communicate the Chinese terms is really hard. Do you consider Chinese a first/second language for you?
Yeah, I think the work is way too long to be able to be read through fully xD I didn’t understand a lot except the central love triangle… what did you think of it? I feel like it’s really tragic overall. My WIP is called Society of the Illeiyn Court and is centered on Crysti, a nobledaughter in a world based off of Ancient China. When she moves to the Illeiyn “court” (kind of like the Jia family estate in Dream of Red Chamber) she is accidentally abducted into a secret society and is forced to deal with it.
@selah-chelyah Yes, I’m also over at SE! Although I haven’t participated in forever, haha… I was a Kapeefer first though. Nice to meet you again! It's g-h, 2-4-6-8 twice, three 9's
literatureforthelight.wordpress.comMay 23, 2020 at 11:12 am #82317@gh24682468999 Yeah, I definitely wouldn’t consider my setting to be like Tolkien’s or anything, as there are cell phones and computers. Depends on the world, though. Some worlds are more advanced than others in technology.
I am completely fluent in Chinese, but not the most comfortable with it, so I would say second. Maybe if I lived in a Chinese-speaking place I would be better at it XD.
I found the love triangle kinda weird and also there was serious miscommunications that wouldn’t have happened if they had just TALKED to each other and ASKED each other… Ah well. I think your WIP sounds really cool! I would love to know more about it!
