How about a light, inspirational thread? 🙂
What are some ‘heart-stopping’ moments in books you’ve read…things that either make you want to write a scene like that or give up writing altogether because other authors are so much better? 😉
Note: by ‘heart-stopping’ I mean the scenes (or the climax of a plot line) which makes you clap your hands over your mouth because you can’t believe what the author just did. It could be funny, tragic, a sudden realization, an unexpected twist…well, in general it will be unexpected.
I know this has happened to me a few times. Unfortunately, none of them are coming to mind. I need to think… But what about you?

Um… for some reason I get the impression that I have had many more than currently come to mind, but the one I can think of off the top of my head comes from a book that I think is relatively little known. ‘El Dorado’, by Baroness Orczy. It belongs to the story of ‘The Scarlet Pimpernel’. Actually, that whole series is full of those kinds of moments, because the MC, a guy named Percy Blakeney, is a master of disguise, and very often the reader herself does not know who it is she is seeing… and then when it comes out, she’s absolutely floored.
There were many, many times when it was virtually certain that Percy was dead, or that he was all the way on the other side of France (the setting for the books is the French Revolution) and then boom he turns up out of nowhere in the form of a ‘different character’ you had previously met and absolutely detested. The only problem is, once you have gotten a few books into the series, you come to expect things like that, and it’s not so much of a surprise when they come. 🙂
September 10, 2015 at 4:31 pm #5564Rule #1: The Scarlet Pimpernel is never dead.
Rule #2: The Scarlet Pimpernel always knows what he’s doing.
Rule #3: Don’t mess with Sir. Percy’s wife.I love the Scarlet Pimpernel books; there are some pretty good parts. 🙂
One thing I find thrilling in books is when I get to a spot, and suddenly the title of the story makes perfect sense. Not all books are like this, but I love the ones that are.

But you forgot a rule.
The filthy, slimy character with long hands is always Sir Percy in disguise. Without fail.

I have one chapter left to write in my novel and I’ve been procrastinating for three days. And I’m still avoiding the blank document of the twenty-third chapter of my manuscript and so I thought I’d hop on over to Kingdom Pen Magazine forum…where nothing is happening. Thanks for fueling my procrastination, guys (NOT!). Maybe some of you will hop on here and help me avoid writing.
Anyway, my point in all of this jabber was to tell you my heart stopping moment.
I love the Hunger Games. I love it. I love it. I love it. And yes, Ezra (if you are even reading this), I realize that there’s no theme (unless you count bloodshed as a theme, because that does happen a lot throughout the series), but I love it anyway. And the moments that made my heart go pitter patter and my mind go “Wait whaaaa?” were as follows:
1. Katniss volunteers for Prim (now THAT is some life shaking stuff right there)
2. Peeta’s heart stopped, and so did mine. But, thankfully, when his heart started beating again, so did mine.
3. How can you not love the ending? *SPOILER ALERT* Katniss, Peeta, and their two little kids dancing on a graveyard.Besides that, I can’t really think of any other moments that really got me in the feels. And, I’m too lazy to actually search my brain for one of those numerous moments that made me want to punch the author in the face.
Thanks for helping me avoid the task at hand, humans!

I’ve read the Hunger Games and enjoyed them…though they do paint a rather depressing picture of life without God, especially at the end.
Anyway (MORE SPOILERS), Prim’s death was probably the most shocking for me. It took me a little while to comprehend it. How can you just kill Prim? As a slightly random question, have you seen the Hunger Game movies?
