@joy-caroline – Alright, I just finished the book and wow, I was certainly not expecting that ending!
SPOILERS for those who may not have read it.
I kind of figured Tom would lose the case just because of how the book was leading on to it, and then the heightened hopes during the court scene. I wasn’t expecting though how he tried to run at the end, that really choked me up a bit, the pain of being tried for something you didn’t commit and no evidence to back up the charges, purely based on how the jury grew up, and just losing hope and running for it. That hit really deep. Then too, the actions of Bob Ewell, being driven by revenge, that he created for himself and doing anything to get back at what he saw was an attack on him.
I really enjoyed the book and heartily thank you for recommending it to me!

Oh my goodness!! The ending is just so intense and sad and beautiful and just… wow.
SPOILERS
Yeah, I wasn’t really expecting Atticus to win the case, because of all the prejudice in the jury, but I was shocked when he didn’t win it. Especially after his heartrending closing statements. That speech has to be the best ever in literature. The part at the end of the trial when Atticus walks out and Reverend Sykes tells Scout to stand for her papa, really got me.
Oh, I just felt so sad for Tom and his family. The wrong done to them was horrible… just horrible. There’s a reason why reading TKAM was the first time the horror of racism and prejudice really hit me in the face. I wasn’t expecting Tom to try to run, either, so that part was really a shock.
Ah yes, Bob Ewell. His actions were just… wow again! The way he cursed and threatened Atticus, and then tried to murder Atticus’s children, was just unbelievable. Boo Radley’s saving Scout and Jem was just the perfect climax. I loved the ending, especially the last sentence. It really hit hard how it showed that Atticus will always be there for his children and love them, although he can never protect them from the cruelties of the world.
You’re absolutely welcome! I love recommending it to everyone and I’m so glad when someone reads it and appreciates it as much as I do!!
March 15, 2021 at 1:07 pm #95566@buildsbygideon Hey! Sorry I’m SUPER late to respond to this, I forgot to check notifs lol, excuse my tardiness..
Yes! The story behind my alias is this: I was drawing something in manga style (Japanese drawing) and I was like, “hey, I need a Japanese name if I’m doing Japanese drawing!” So my Japanese name is Megumi Kadotake. (Cool tidbit: Megumi actually means “grace” in Japanese, that’s why I picked it :D)
I know!! I just finished The Lost Colony about 2 days ago, actually. I really like the series so far!! š I’d have to say that, besides Artemis, Holly and Butler are my favourites. Minerva is funny, too. I like all the characters though, it’s so hard to pick!!! Do you have a favourite? š
Aww, that sounds like a really emotional movie! War stories are always tear-jerkers for me.
YESSSS. Have you ever tried pineapple and olives together on pizza? SO. GOOD.
Hmm, I get that. The movie did a *sarcastic smile* CRACK JOB on casting. (Absolutely not to be racist, but they casted a lot of characters as a different race than what they are in the books) Artemis, in the movie, is all big-hearted and uses friendship to save the world, etc. He seems.. less smart in the movie, too, and he ACTUALLY IS SHOWN WEARING CASUAL CLOTHES. *facepalm*
Other than a lottttt of mistakes on character, the plot was pretty decent-ish, I guess? They added in this new fairy weapon thingy that Artemis has to save. It’s one of those movies where it would be pretty good if it wasn’t supposed to be based on something else. I’d give it about a 6.5 out of 10. It was… half-baked, kind of. And there was a lack of Irish culture in it. Whatever, though. This pretty much sums it up:

i'll make the winter now my homeMarch 18, 2021 at 11:21 pm #95875@joy-caroline – Yes! It really took me off guard, I wasn’t expecting even him to attack children like that, though it kind of makes sense, that’s his last way to get back in a meaningful way.
March 18, 2021 at 11:30 pm #95878@scripter-of-kingdoms Haha no problem Grace! I was late in responding to this too so I guess we’re even.
That’s awesome! I love names in other languages that actually have meaning behind them, I’ve seen a lot of people (and don’t get me wrong, I’m guilty of this too) pick random cool phrases in other languages without even knowing what they mean! I love filling out what I write with small easter eggs or things that might pique people’s interest and it’s fascinating to see what different people catch on to and ask about! Funny thing is, I’ve got a dutch background and I love the language but don’t speak very much of it, and it’s super similar to English so sometimes when I use a word here or there that people think its a typo (see the title of this thread š )
I’m not a huge fan of olives, to be honest, I may have to try them again sometime because I had a similar experience with mushrooms but now love them!
Haha, that’s true, it’s a difficult question to ask the favorite character, for me it’s probably Artemis and butler, such an amazing team though the other characters are so well thought out too!
I was afraid of that, just looking at the trailer completely turned me off to watching it. Yeah, they should have kept to the first book, from what it looked like it had bits and pieces from the whole series. Not to spoil anything, but the later books do have a bit more selflessness of Artimus, but absolutely not to that extent and it’s always a struggle, never a whole giving.
Haha that’s hilarious, yeah the Percy Jackson books were so good and the movie hardly did it justice, it was a good stand-alone film, but didn’t feel like it in the same world.
March 18, 2021 at 11:33 pm #95879@kathleen Out of curiosity, how far are you through the Anne of Green Gables series, and what’s happening?
Also, I need new book suggestions! I’m about finished with a business book and want to read another fiction after it!
March 19, 2021 at 10:11 am #95892@buildsbygideon Hey, that’s super cool! Yeah, I do that too lol. I’m really inclined towards other languages for some reason, I just love learning them or translating phrases, even. For a school project, I’m learning Japanese, and for a li’l mini project my mom wants me to learn how to say something (about like a paragraph of info-length) in Japanese!
Eyyy, Dutch is really cool! I know like a couple words of it, one of my best friends is Dutch (her mom actually is from Holland!) so she taught me a few words. Haha, honestly I didn’t think it was a typo! I type stuff the way I say it, so I type ‘heyo’ or ‘hai’ (which interestingly means yes in Japanese) instead of hello. I kind of thought it was like that XD but that’s really cool!!! :DDD
Haha, you ought to try pineapple with olive. Take a chunk of pineapple (a small chunk, one of those ones from cans you get from the grocery store) and stuff it inside the hole in the olive.
And then eat it. You will not regret it. I promise. It is SO GOOD.
I know! Artemis and Butler are such a great team. (Transitioning to another character here XD) I only have one thing to say about Minerva: the author set her up for a bigger role in the next book, but… no Minerva. She was a fun character, I like that Artemis loved her but also thought her annoying at the same time XD
Ugh, yeah, it’s true. The movie could’ve been WAYYY better. Now, honestly, it’s just sitting around being mined for malicious meme material. (Hey, that was alliterative! ((Ok, sorry, I’m the kind of person to stop and point that out)) XD)
Lol, my friend has read all of the Percy Jackson books and she said the movie was really bad. I think that Disney is just very bad at translating books into movies.
And then they made the live-action Mulan. *wheezes* That movie was somethin’ else. It was so bad, it didn’t feel like the original AT ALL. Like, if it weren’t supposed to be Mulan, I’d say it would be a pretty good movie, actually. But since it WAS supposed to be Mulan, well… we don’t speak of that one. XD It’s always the movie I compare others to on a scale of badness.
Anyways, sorry for the thesis. XD I like to talk a lot.

i'll make the winter now my homeMarch 19, 2021 at 11:35 pm #95935Yes, now that I think about it that was a big disappointment, it really seemed like Minerva would have played a bigger part, even toward the end of the series she doesn’t make an appearance, which is really too bad. I would have loved to see where that relationship went, though maybe it would have spun off and got sidetracked from the original storyline…
Haha, yes it seems like Disney would do so much better if they didn’t name the movies after the classics, they never seem to get it as good as the original (either book or movie). They’re great movies on their own but the second you tie to a book, down the drain it goes!
I’ll have to try that sometime, I’m not sure how it will taste though, olives are a bit too sour for my liking, though then again I’ve only really had the green ones which I’ve heard are completely different from the black. Maybe I need to try those first.
What’s really interesting is if you read the original fairy tales that Disney bases their movies on, most of them are really messed up and have super gruesome endings. For example the little mermaid…
DON’T READ ON IF YOU DON’T WANT IT RUINED… I MEAN IT…
You’ll probably read it anyway, but I gave you fair warning š
The original story was where she gave her voice up forever, and each step would feel like walking on glass. Plus if she didn’t get the prince to marry her she would turn into sea foam… When she got on land and finally got to the palace the prince saw her more as a pet than anything else, super beautiful, but he didn’t love her and he ended up marrying another girl, and her last chance to not die was to kill the prince before midnight of his wedding with a special knife, but she couldn’t do it and got turned into foam and the story ended there. Super sad and very well written. I completely butchered it, but it’s still an amazing fairytale to read. I highly suggest š
All of Hans Christian Anderson’s stories are super weird and gory, few with happy endings, but they’re all really good! I think it’s called the Blue Fairy Book with all his stories, a super long book, took me over 2 months to finish them all!
Also, Grace, I need book suggestions, I’m eager to get into another good fiction! It’s been almost a week since the last one and I’m dying for another good one! You know what I like, any suggestions?
March 21, 2021 at 12:29 am #95988@buildsbygideon I know! I just love the line where Hollyās like āgreat now there are two child geniusesā and Minervaās just like āGENIIā. XD She couldāve been a really great character.
Yesss, try it! With black olives though, theyāre much less sour (and veryyyy good on pizza šš).
Haha, I know!! They always make the endings all weird. Iāve actually read the original Little Mermaid, you didnāt butcher it š I have a really big book of Hans Christian Andersenās stories, every single one he ever wrote. I really liked The Emperorās New Clothes. XD Lolll, his stories are really weird but theyāre also good. Heartrending, some of them.
Ahhh, I could recommend books for fifty pages. I will only recommend one, however, and that would be my FBoAT (fave book of all time, I made it an acronym lol). I know itās supposed to be for people around my age (Iām actually 12 years old XD if you didnāt know) but it is SUCH a good book that ya canāt not read it. I know literally nobody else whoās read it, so I want you to read it!! š It sounds dumb but really isnāt XD, it blends reality and fantasy VERY well, better than anything else Iāve ever read. So please, do yourself a favour. Go and readĀ What We Found In The Sofa and How It Saved The WorldĀ by Henry Clark. You will 100% not regret it.

YES! That was the best thing she could have possibly said!!

Wow really? You’re the first person I’ve met that has not only heard of it but actually read the big book of fairy tales!! They are weird, aren’t they! Super interesting though š

Oh man, I’ve got it on my list… I’m trusting you that I won’t regret it, just from the cover it doesn’t seem like a book I’d typically read… but, I’ve been pleasantly surprised before so I will be adding it as my next fiction book! And wow, I didn’t realize you were only 12! Excellent writing skills, well beyond your years! š

March 25, 2021 at 12:44 am #96211@buildsbygideon It’s true!! That’s one of my favourite lines from the whole series (along with “I’M THE NUT!!!” I finished The Atlantis Complex last night XD)
Yeah, same here! I actually haven’t gotten all the way through the book yet; but I’m really liking the weirdness so far š
Lol, it is one of the BEST books I’ve ever read. Definitely tell me what you think afterwards! Haha, people tell me I sound older than I really am a lot XD Thank you, though! I really enjoy writing! š

i'll make the winter now my homeMarch 31, 2021 at 11:23 pm #96552@kadotake Alright Grace… I’m about halfway through “What We Found In The Sofa and How It Saved the World” and…
It’s actually quite good and I’m really enjoying it! š
My expectations initially were that River, Freak, and Fiona would go into the couch and it is a whole other world within the sofa itself. Boy was I surprised! I’m at the part right now where they are in the hazmat suits in the conference room and it’s really gripping! I’m excited to see how it all plays out š
April 8, 2021 at 10:16 am #96961@buildsbygideon Sorry I’m late to this (again). XD If you use my little tag thingy under my profile picture,( @scripter-of-kingdoms ) when you reply to me it’ll notify me. š
Ooooo, I’m so glad you’re liking it!!! Hahaha, well, if Indorsia counts as another world, you might say that’s true š It’s a super good book and I’m so glad you’re liking it! Who are your favourite characters so far?
Also, once you’re done reading this book, I have another recommendation for you: Many WatersĀ by Madeleine L’Engle. It’s part of the Wrinkle in Time series (which you NEED to read if you have not read the first one!), but I also know no one who’s actually read it XD. It takes place in Biblical times, but is in NO way boring at ALL. It’s honestly among my favourite books now that I think of it. Please read this amazing book too!!! (“Read me, read me,” it says!) XD
