@devastate-lasting I’ve never heard of the term novella before, I just googled it. That’s awesome!
Yes! I find it hard to put my finger on what makes a good book a good book, it just has that overall sense of realism to it!
I’m not a huge movie person, though I do enjoy watching with friends from time to time, my favorite by far is Life is Beautiful, a fantastic film about a Jewish family in WW2. Super sad, but a really hopeful message! I’ll have to check out Parasite, you make it sound like a must-watch movie!
March 12, 2021 at 5:27 pm #95399@writerlexi1216 – Ooo sounds intriguing! I’ll add it to my reading list 🙂
Yes, he is an awesome writer and I think you’d really enjoy Mere Christianity! Also, The Great Divorce was good too if you haven’t read it. Much more of an imaginative style and is one of those books you could keep reading over and over and make new connections each time you read it to Christianity and the world at large!
I may post some of it! Not many people read my stuff so I’m not entirely sure exactly how much sense it will make to other people. Sometimes it’s just an outpouring of thoughts in an organized fashion.
March 12, 2021 at 5:44 pm #95401@kathleenramm – That’s quite impressive to exceed heightened expectations though I quite agree with you! I’m jealous that you have many people you can talk to about that and other books! Unfortunately, it seems like reading, in general, has been on a decline and it’s been difficult to find people wanting to discuss them, that’s partly why I’m really excited to join KP!
Wow already started! That’s fast! Anne really is! Though it gets off to a somewhat slow start with the first book but progresses much faster with the following ones. My least favorite book of the series is actually probably the first one, LM Montgomery it seems was in the character-building stage and doesn’t really do the rest of the book’s justice. It’s still really good, but the later ones are better in my opinion!
Rilla of Ingleside (the last one) is by far my favorite and I’ve read it maybe a dozen times now! It’s about her daughter during WW1 and shows her growth from being very immature and frivolous into a very selfless God-fearing woman over the course of the war. Out of all the fiction books I’ve read that is probably my number one favorite!
The family business is hardlotion.com/, centered around fixing people’s dry and cracking skin, plus my mom made a few all-natural beauty products too though that’s more sideline stuff.
Wow, that’s so awesome! Yeah, I just got off the phone with your brother and he mentioned a bit about that! I didn’t realize that you did all your mom’s videos! You definitely seem to have a knack for it! Did you just pick up the skills by working on the videos or did you take courses for it?
March 12, 2021 at 6:20 pm #95405@buildsbygideon Oh, I really enjoyed Life is Beautiful! A lot sadder than I expected it to be. Yes, I’d encourage you to check out Parasite, though I have to warn you that it’s…not exactly a family film, and it’s quite dark and terrifying. But it is, in my opinion, a masterpiece.
Lately, it's been on my brain
Would you mind letting me know
If hours don't turn into daysMarch 12, 2021 at 6:30 pm #95407@devastate-lasting haha, thanks for the warning! Dark and terrifying, like a horror/thriller?

Thank you! I’ve planned on going to seminary because, well first of all, I heard God clearly calling me that route. After that, for a number of reasons. Several being that I really admire the head pastor of my church, and she’s inspired and encouraged me. There’s also, of course, my school principal and Bible teachers. All those women have influenced my decision. I have a passion for Bible and theology, and love conversing about it. Then there’s wanting to dedicate my life to drawing people into the flock… I could go on. XD
That’s AWESOME you’re reading TKAM!! It is SO good – the best book you could ever spend time reading. People who haven’t picked it up yet are seriously missing out. Harper Lee is a genius. You’ve gotten pretty far! Without spoiling anything, the trial scene is just very intense and emotional. So be prepared!
March 12, 2021 at 7:20 pm #95412@buildsbygideon Yep! It’s a dark comedy/thriller!

If hours don't turn into daysMarch 12, 2021 at 7:49 pm #95413@joy-caroline – That’s so awesome to hear!! I’m glad you’ve got a clear vision of where you think you’re lead to go!! 😀
That’s so cool that you’re interested in theology! It’s not a super common topic to be interested in! At the risk of sounding ill-spirited, you’re weird! 😀
Aside from some of CSL’s work, what are some of your favorite theology books? I’m always looking for new ones to read!
Haha, yeah, it’s really really good, so many subtle things in the book that hit really deep and show what it was like during that time! I love the innocence of Jean Louise and how she talks about what’s going on!
Oh, I just remembered, a really good book, an autobiography, written around the same time that is absolutely worth reading is Up From Slavery about a former slave building schools for his recently freed people!

March 12, 2021 at 7:50 pm #95416@devastate-lasting – oo, I may have to pass on it then, I’m not a huge fan of horror :/ doesn’t sit right with me
March 12, 2021 at 9:45 pm #95425@buildsbygideon Ah, I get you! I’m not the biggest fan of horror myself.

Thank you! I take being told I’m weird as a compliment, so no worries there. XD
My top theology book recommendations:
The Autobiography of the Pioneer Missionary to the New Hebrides (Vanuatu)Â – John G. Paton. This book honestly reads like a thriller, I mean, it’s about conversions among cannibals!
The Life and Diary of David Brainerd –Â David Brainerd and Jonathan Edwards. This is a really emotional and deeply moving account of an incredible life.
A Trip Into the Supernatural –Â Roger J. Morneau. This is a Seventh-Day Adventist book about Morneau’s life as a Satanist before his conversion to Christianity through the witnessing of an SDA coworker. This book is what gave me the final push to choose the SDA denomination, but even if you’re not an SDA it’s incredibly interesting and moving. Morneau answers many crucial and controversial questions about God within the book.
Books by D.A. Carson. I love his resources on St. Paul, which helped me in writing my book. Call to Spiritual Reformation: Priorities from Paul and His Prayers and A Model of Christian Maturity are both excellent.
I highly recommend John Piper’s written works. His website, DesiringGod.org, is full of encouraging Christian content and I read it each day. His book, Why I Love the Apostle Paul: 30 Reasons, as well as his many excellent in-depth studies, sermons, and various resources on Paul, greatly help me in my writing. I don’t agree with all of Piper’s theology since he is a Calvinist and certainly not SDA, but that’s okay. His writings are very valuable and I enjoy pondering over them and what I would agree on and what I wouldn’t.
I would definitely recommend checking out the above!
I absolutely love Scout’s voice in TKAM! It’s so much fun, and so interesting and humbling, to see things through a small child’s very innocent eyes. I’m so glad you’re reading the book – definitely keep me posted on where you are in it! (Definitely want to discuss that trial scene once you get there…)
March 13, 2021 at 12:14 am #95432@joy-caroline Wow! That’s a huge list! I’ll definitely be taking a look at these, thank you so much for sharing them! Why I love The Apostle Paul sounds very interesting by the title!
And yes, absolutely meant as a compliment! I see being weird as an awesome thing! There are too many not weird (dare I say normal) people out there already 🙂
I just got to the court case and going through it now! Things just got really clear really fast, kind of danced around the idea that Tom’s case was about taking advantage of a woman though didn’t mention it until now

No problem! I’ll always have a ton of recommendations. XD Why I Love the Apostle Paul is such a good book.
Right? No fun to be normal.
The court case is quite intense, for sure. I believe it is the first time it’s explicitly confirmed, but there was enough information given earlier in the book to solidify that idea in our minds. Like when Calpurnia explains it some and then tells Scout to ask Atticus.
The end of the courtroom scenes will hit you with an emotional SLAM if you’re anything like me. That’s all I’ll say though!
March 13, 2021 at 4:46 pm #95494@joy-caroline – Oh boy, I was afraid of that, I’m getting toward the end and it all seems to be almost too good to be true. There were a lot of hints that the court case wouldn’t go in Tom’s favor (haven’t finished it yet so still no spoilers) so my prediction is that despite all the evidence in his favor, he will still get sentenced to death.

Yeah… my lips are sealed until you finish. XD No spoilers, though I will say that the ending is expected and unexpected and surprising and unsurprising all rolled into one. The final scene is like a slap in the face and a kiss combined…
Haha my way of putting things is interesting…
