Hi, I’m Annika! This is my second day in the Kingdom Pen community. I am a Christian Canadian who loves writing fantasy, loves editing a little less, plays guitar, and goes downhill skiing down double black diamond runs.
My WIP is about a girl with healing powers who loses part of her lifespan each time she uses them.
I want to learn more about character development and can help with worldbuilding 🙂

November 26, 2020 at 9:00 am #87488@annika-c Hi Annika! I’m Linyang! Nice to meet you!
Can I just say…I also once wrote a story about a man with healing powers who lost a bit of his lifespan every time he used them…and pretty much for my whole fantasy work, no matter what kind of power my Magic Users have…they have to lose a bit of their lifespan for it?
But anyways! I totally agree with you; editing is not fun at all. You play guitar? That’s really cool! I play piano.
What are some of your favorite books/authors?
Lately, it's been on my brain
Would you mind letting me know
If hours don't turn into daysNovember 26, 2020 at 10:01 am #87489It’s really nice to meet you, Linyang!
Wow, really? That’s so neat! I think having a price for using magic makes it more interesting because characters have to really need something to risk losing time from their lives.
I enjoy reading Wings of Fire by Tui Sutherland, Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger, Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson, and How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell. Have you read any of those? What are some of your favorite books?
(I don’t know how to tag people yet so I hope you find this XD)

November 26, 2020 at 10:34 am #87492hey!! Nice to meet you, I’m Ella. (Btw, you can tag people by copying and pasting the handle underneath someone’s username–e.g. mine is @writergirl101)
I’ve read Wings of Fire and Keeper of the Lost Cities!! I love them! My personal favorites are The Maze Runner series by James Dashner, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and Winnie-The-Pooh by A. A. Milne! 😁
Here are a couple of questions: 😉
1) Do you play sports?
2) Have you ever participated in NaNoWriMo?
3) What’s your favorite Thanksgiving food? 🙂
Great to meet you!!

I do lots of solo sports like biking and hiking, and go downhill skiing with my family. I played on my school basketball team for a couple years and tried synchronized swimming for two years as well.
Yep! I’ve won NaNoWriMo three times. I wrote two novellas instead of one novel for the first two years, and then last year I wrote two full novels…100,000 words in one month. That dried up my ability to write for a while afterward though, so I don’t think I’ll do it again. 🙂 I love NaNo. This November I am working on an editing goal instead. (My username is Riddleweaver)
I like mashed potatoes!
Where is the farthest away you have travelled? When did you start writing? What is your favorite animal/fantasy creature?
consistency and passion are key
November 26, 2020 at 12:10 pm #87496That’s awesome! I play basketball for my school, too. I love it! 😍 I ran cross country once but it wasn’t my favorite… I want to do track and field in spring next year too.

Wow, great job! I was going to do NaNoWriMo this year, but I was too busy with school. Hopefully I can do it in July.
Where is the farthest away you have travelled?
To Trinidad and Tobago when I was four! 😋
When did you start writing?
Oh man, I can’t remember. Probably when I was four, too! lol
What is your favorite animal/fantasy creature?
Unicorns or phoenixes. 🦄🔥 What about you?

-gladiator, 2000November 26, 2020 at 12:31 pm #87498@annika-c XD I tend to look at recent topics so I usually find posts. But yea Ella is right about tags.
I’ve heard of all of those books! I’ve read a couple volumes of How to Train Your Dragon and I have a friend who is a huge fan of Keeper of the Lost Cities.
My favorite books? *checks hand* A couple would be The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, East of Eden by John Steinbeck, My Sweet Orange Tree by José Mauro de Vasconcelos, and Night on the Galactic Railroad by Kenji Miyazawa.
That’s cool how you’ve won NaNo three times! I won once with around 65,000 words, and afterwards I couldn’t write for four months, so I don’t think I’ll be doing it again for max efficiency.
Let me see if there’re any fun questions I can come up with…
1) Do you have any pets?
2) What are some of your favorite foods?
3) What are some of your favorite movies?

@annika-c It’s nice to meet you! I’m so glad that you’ve joined the KeePers of Pen! 😉
I have a few questions for you of my own…
- Do you like cookies?
- Do you listen to music when you write? If so, what kind?
- Do you have any tips for writing 100k in a month???? That is SO incredible!
- Do you have any plans for the novels and novellas you’ve written, like publishing them sometime soon?
Anyway, if you ever have any questions, please pose them, and if you have anything you’d like critiqued, we have several sections for that!
November 26, 2020 at 5:36 pm #87503@nova21 My favorites are dragons!
@devastate-lasting My family has a pet dog, and my sister has a cat. I used to have a bird but it flew away. I like any foods without gluten, dairy, or eggs (I am sensitive to all of those, so anything that I can eat without feeling bad, I enjoy.) I really like The Hobbit movies and Star Wars, and animated ones as well like How To Train Your Dragon and the Lego Movies.@gracie-j I used to like cookies…unfortunately I found out last year that I am sensitive to lots of food including wheat, dairy, and eggs…so cookies are one of the worst foods for me to eat. Yes, I listen to fantasy instrumental music ALL the time when I write, specifically Peter Crowley or Dinas Emrys. I am getting close to finished updating all the developmental edits from my editor and am planning to start sending out query letters to agents in January 2021!
It’s so great to meet all three of you! What are your current writing projects about? What are you favorite and least favorite school subjects?
consistency and passion are key
November 27, 2020 at 7:54 am #87504@annika-c Nice. Those movies I enjoyed as well. I’m currently working on several projects, but my main one is a extremely long fantasy saga about Magic Users and their inability to find a happy ending. My favorite school subject was literature, and my least favorite is science.
It’s really cool that you’re going to start querying soon! Do you have any plans?

If hours don't turn into daysNovember 27, 2020 at 10:56 am #87507Well, my professional editor said she would help me find an agent when I was done editing, so I will talk with her soon to learn more about the querying process.

November 27, 2020 at 1:58 pm #87509Hi and welcome to the Kingdom of Pen!
If you don’t mind me asking, what area of Canada do you live in? I’ve been to Canada once, and it was an awesome trip. It’s so beautiful and spacious and the air is so sweet and crisp. I’d love to go back there sometime.
Woah, it’s really cool that you go skiing. How old were you when you started? Unfortunately it’s pretty much impossible for me to ski because I live in Florida. No snow and the highest hill in Florida is one on a golf course. XD
How old were you when you started writing? And what inspired you to start?
That’s amazing that you have an editor and an agent! How is the publishing process going?
I can totally relate to being allergic to a bunch of stuff. There was one point where I pretty much lived off of bananas. XD But there’s a great blog called Feasting on Fruit that has a lot of allergy-friendly recipes that are also really delicious and don’t require a bunch of odd ingredients. It’s been my key to keeping cookies in my life. 😀
November 27, 2020 at 5:27 pm #87513Nice to meet you! I live in British Columbia. I believe I started skiing at age 5. What sports do you do in Florida?
I started writing seriously at age 11 during a creative writing block at school, where I was just able to start writing anything. I had been a hardcore reader my whole childhood, and that led into my writing.
I have an editor, but not an agent yet. My editor will help me find an agent when I am done editing my book. I am so excited about the publishing process but a bit nervous because I haven’t learned any marketing skills.
Really? Cool! I will have to search for that blog. I do miss cookies. 🙂

@annika-c No cookies! Bless your heart! My family is on a semi-strict diet (not due to food allergies/sensitivities, though), so we eat spelt flour or gluten-free, no dairy (until just recently, when my mom snuck a ton of cheese and butter into the house ;)), and no white sugar–so I’m sure I might could fix you up something. It may be a virtual cookie, though–like this one 🍪. 😉
(Am I the only one who doesn’t listen to instrumental music? 😆 @devastate-lasting, @kathleenramm, @nova21 Have any of y’all heard the Christmas version of the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack? My two favorite things–pirates and Christmas–in one soundtrack! Amazing!)
Ah! An editor, agents, querying in January! How exciting!!!!! Eek! I’m self-published through KDP myself (and loving it), but it’s always so AWESOME to hear when someone’s on the track to traditional publication! Congrats! Please let us know how that goes!
In answer to your questions, my favorite subject is English (of course), but I also LOVE history, drama (although that’s not to say I do much with my natural dramatic flair, apart from direct the epic tragedies of my own characters ;)), and I’ve been known to dabble in art. I’ve always enjoyed sociology, too. My least favorites are math and science and anything that has to do with the two. 😆
And I’m currently working on Book 3 in my Daughters of the Seven Seas series–which now officially has a blurb!
Rina Blackstone is a daughter of the wind and waves—raised by a fierce pirate captain to be the scourge of the Seven Seas—born of the stormy skies and tumultuous oceans. Here is where her journey begins, and from thence she embarks upon a lifelong adventure rife with revenge, heartache, death, romance, intrigue, and, best of all, redemption. Join her and her ragtag band of pirates as they fight off vengeful enemies, the Royal Navy, and even their own pasts in an epic adventure upon the high seas!
Book 3, Bound and Determined, is a continuation of Rina’s story and the beginning of two other characters’ story. It’s a mix of action/adventure, romance, and history.
It’s great to meet you, and so cool to hear that you’re soon to start querying! Yippee!
