Teasing is the best. Especially if a character is teasing another about something actually cool and unique to that character. That way, it’s obvious it’s just teasing, and it highlights how comfortable the characters are around each other.

Yes, humor with a purpose is so important. Even if it’s just to set up expectations for a character’s emotional state. I’ve found that’s what I use jokes the most for. Showing the reader how to gauge the character’s feelings.

A simple snide comment can show more into a character than an author monologue and be much more memorable.
Smart jokes are often the best jokes. *Nods* Have you watched the Princess Bride? You seem like the kind of person who has.

I have sort of, through a filter thing, so a cleaned up version. The sarcastic humor and play off all sorts of cliches was great (although seriously Buttercup? The rapier landed at your feet. Just pick it up and take the rat-thing’s head off while you have the chance!).
