May 25, 2021 at 11:39 am #100107Ooof, sorry it took me forever to get here. I’ve just not had the time to be very active on KP liked I’d wish. :,(
Anyway, the biggest thing is seriously DON’T COMPARE. I always get soooo down on me and my writing whenever I start comparing my sloppy, first draft to my favorite novels ever. But then I have to remember that you know what who’s to say my first draft doesn’t look like my favorite author’s first drafts. I always remind myself that every single author out there has been at my point, which means this is okay. And then, I try to take a step away from my story for a few days or a week and find that spark of love that made me begin writing it in the first place.
I’m just gonna say this: What you’re writing right now is AMAZING!!! It’s soooo awesome and other people NEED to read this book one day. I know I haven’t really read anything in it, but I don’t need to to know you’re an INCREDIBLE writer!!!! And if God lays a story on your heart HE’S gonna give you a way to complete it. He says your story is beautiful and wonderful. I try to find my motivation to write in God alone, because He is my only strength on the hard days. The only One who can pick me back up when I fall. And He’s got you and your story!!!!!! Soooo Keep on writing!!!!!! <333 *waving pom poms*

May 26, 2021 at 3:42 am #100130I am sorry for being late to this topic, but you’re definitely not the only one who’s wanted to chuck everything in the garage. I myself probably feel like doing that almost every other week since I often feel like my writing is scrambled, unclear, or just plain unsalvageable. And we’re not alone either, one of the greatest writers of our time, Niel Gaiman had written an article for NaNoWriMo participants on the NaNo website, (but it applies to all writers really) and basically says right in there how he often feels like quitting on his own novels as well. So I think it’s something every writer feels like doing from time to time. The important thing is to keep writing anyway and not be too hard on yourself. As writers, we’re our own worst critics and can be exceptionally harsh on our work sometimes. And if you’re working on your first draft, first drafts shouldn’t do or being anything more than a box of mud. But in the rewriting and drafting or as I like to call it: the improving, that mud will take shape. Kind of like pottery on a wheel, how it starts as a lump and is slowly formed into a pot or glass or jar. All masterpieces start that way, as something that seemed unsalvagable. But it’s often those things -the things that don’t seem salvageable- that turn out to be the foundation for all the best of things:)

Fall in love with JesusJune 2, 2021 at 10:59 am #100405I know I’m late but…
1) Your writing is probably not as bad as you think it is. You’re your worst critic.
2) Don’t read other people’s amazing work. Read their (or your previous) failures instead. 😛
3) Remember why you’re writing. Whatever reason you’re writing for, keep that in mind.
4) It really helps me if I don’t focus on what I want to happen (publishing it, people enjoying it, etc.) but instead write just to write. You have an amazing idea in your head and even if you’re the only one who ever enjoys it, that’s enough to keep on writing no matter what. I know that this might seem like a contradiction to the above post, but it’s not. 😉
5) You get better every sentence you write, no matter how hopeless it looks to you.
6) I like to take a break in writing if I get really discouraged. Coming back with a clearer head really helps. Plus, you might come up with a thrilling idea that will make you interested in your work again.
7) Kick negative thoughts out of your head (easier said than done). Make yourself say 10 positive things about your writing. Focus on your strengths and not your weaknesses.
Just remember, everybody gets discouraged about their writing, so you’re not alone (in fact, I don’t think you’d be human if you didn’t get discouraged occasionally)! Keep writing! I’m praying for you!
Some people fail; others learn what not to try.
June 2, 2021 at 5:42 pm #100457@nanisnook Honestly, I’m in the same boat right now lol. I always come to a point in my novels (usually about 6/8 of the way in) where I feel like everything I did is trash and I wasted 4/whatever years of my life on a dumb novel that no one will ever like or read. But you know what I tell myself? It’s my dumb novel, those are characters I love, it doesn’t matter if some people don’t like it, and if Twilight did it, so can I B) XD
Nah, but in all seriousness, this will pass eventually, keep going and don’t give up. You become good at what you make yourself do, so keep going and you’ll get better. Also, if 99% of people in the world hate your book, that just means there are still 78 million people in the world who love it 😉
