Arabella
“Ganesh?”
The frantic speeches came to a halt as all eyes turned to her. Ara blushed, looking down at her reflection in the marble tiling. Heat rose to her neck and cheeks as she shrugged a strand of hair over her shoulder. This didn’t quell the feeling of eyes on her, though.
Burning into her skin. Into her soul. Not that they meant to, but…
She could feel them.
Actually feel them!
What was with that?
“Bellie!” A young, jovial voice rung through the hall, making Ara’s eyes draw upward. A smile broke out on her face and she let out a laugh. “How I’ve missed you!”
Ganesh’s grin was larger than life, and accented by his fiery red hair. His nearly translucent skin glowed, brightening the room, and he winked playfully as he stretched his arms out.
“Well, don’t I get a hug?”
Ara’s eyes crinkled, a lump forming in her throat. She ran toward the young man’s outstretched arms, burying her face into his chest and embracing him. She swallowed, gripping the back of his jacket to help keep control of herself.
But…oh, how she wanted to cry.
“I-I’ve missed you too…Gan,” She choked out, squeezing her eyes shut. She could once again feel her parent’s staring, their worried glances piercing her heart, and she scolded herself for being so emotional.
But…
It had been so long.
And everything had been so hard.
Slowly, Ganesh pulled back from the embrace, leaving Ara a bit cold if she were being honest. He looked down at her, his eyes holding a soft expression she’d only seen a few times before. He smiled.
Ara sucked in a deep breath, trying to regain her composure. She straightened, folding her hands in a manner she always thought looked rather princess-like, and returned his smile. Her eyes drifted to the two figures behind Ganesh; her parents, and a stream of guilt washed over her.
They didn’t seem displeased by the sight of her, by any means. In fact, quite the opposite. But that didn’t dispel the churning in her stomach at the thought of her recent avoidance of family. She was sure they were beginning to question things…
She returned her attention to Ganesh.
“What brings you back?” She asked, a small slimmer of hope seeping into her heart.
Perhaps he’d be staying a while.
Ganesh’s smile faltered, his brows scrunching in concern. Ara’s parents did the same.
“What? Is something wrong?” Ara’s voice grew soft.
Her father stepped forward, a forced smile on his lips. He placed a firm but gentle hand on Ara’s shoulder, pulling her toward him. “It’s nothing my princess. Nothing at all.”
Ganesh and her mother exchanged a look.
It obviously wasn’t nothing.
“Abba?” Ara questioned, looking into his deep brown eyes, the same color as her own. His brows furrowed and he cleared his throat, rubbing a hand over his stubble of a beard. Her mother stepped forward, taking him by the arm.
“Donovan,” she whispered, “She needs to be told.”
Ara looked between them both and then at Ganesh. “She’s right, Your Highness.”
Donovan sighed, gazing at his daughter. Ara couldn’t help but notice that he looked slightly…older then before. She could easily see a few wrinkles marring his handsome face. And there were a few strands of gray that had somehow peeked through his neatly combed hair.
She frowned. What could make her father, the brave, wise king of A’Grend seem so…tired?
OKAY this is all I’ve got so far…. for this scene….so yea!! I’ll have to finish it later….
