The amount of options for items/spells/whatever is insane. I’m loving it. Now it’s time to design a warlock without any prior knowledge of the game and horribly underestimate the amount of information I need on a character sheet.
I will make you lose The Game with me.
Didnt mean to ignore this question whoops.
Short answer: yes.
Long answer:
I have opened a dnd manual only like once so I’m probably a terrible person to ask for advice, but I say just make up whatever you want for world building and characters, and then worry about following the rules for things like spells and combat. The books provide some world building, but I think it’s mostly just for inspiration, and not to be followed exactly.
I think you can make up as much as you want. Most dms make up their own worlds. First time I ever was a sub dm for my brother’s campaign, I teleported our crew of fantasy/ steampunk characters to Kansas and had them help an old farmer fight off some zombies.
Not saying you should be as crazy as me, though. Idk im tired and rambling rn. Hope there was some helpfulness somewhere in there.
Also, there are books that have already built one-shots in them, complete with npcs, history, locations, and enemies that you could use. Maybe doing one of those would be a good practice and take some of the stress off.
