@waterlily I always thought dressage looked like a beautiful dance. I like to watch it on horses.dreamsports.tv. I like the name Salsa! Congrats on getting him! Any advice for a horse-owner-wanna-be?
Aw, sorry that jumping pony avoided the jumps! I’ve had horses do that and nearly ended up on the ground! I haven’t competed in any shows yet, but my stable is getting an equestrian team together in the summer, and I might join in on that. We’d do shows and clinics. I’m dying waiting until then!!!

@jenwriter17 Number one piece of advice: learn all you can about horse management. Feeding, bathing, lunging, grooming, tacking, trailering, etc., cause those are the skills you use most when you have your own horse. People at my barn bring friends over to ride sometimes that take riding lessons, but don’t really have any clue how to do anything else with the horse. I have some pretty funny stories about those kinds of people.
The equestrian team sounds fun! Showing is a really good experience and helps with those horse management skills. 😉
January 29, 2018 at 12:29 pm #61679@waterlily I have soooo many books on horse care and training. I’ve been studying natural horsemanship and I’ve gone to a Clinton Anderson clinic.
Yes, I am dying waiting until summer when the season starts. My teacher said some of the clinics we’ll learn how to lunge horses and work them from the ground, so that’ll be great experience for me. I’m also currently helping my teacher train two other horses, so I’ve been learning a lot these past several months.

@jenwriter17 That’s really cool that you get to help train horses! It’s so frustrating but rewarding at the same time. Salsa only had 90 days of training when I got him, so it’s been slow going. He’s so smart though, he catches on really fast to most everything. What kinds of horses do you ride?
January 29, 2018 at 3:41 pm #61709@waterlily Wow, only 90 days of training? It’s a lot of fun to work with horses that catch on to things fast though. Lol, I’ve ridden a couple horses that were a bit too smart for their own good!
Over the years I’ve ridden appaloosas, quarter horses, cross breeds, and one thoroughbred. I think my stable only has one pure thoroughbred. His name is Rambo. He’s a big bay who’s really sweet. He’s gettin’ kinda old, but he still loves to gallop on trail rides.
