Helloooo, this is the art/illustration critique topic (as you probably gathered from the title). You can post a piece of art and others can critique it (please specify what you want critique for, otherwise it’ll be considered a free-for-all, and EVERYTHING will be ripped to shreds [just kidding
{mostly}]). You can also submit an unfinished piece if you want advice on something.Be nice, obviously, and don’t criticize things people don’t want critiqued (for example, don’t critique someone’s style if they asked for critique on composition and vice versa).
I’d kick things off with a piece for critique, but I don’t really have anything atm, soooo…
If I had ever learnt, I should have been a great proficient.

March 1, 2025 at 12:31 pm #198845I already posted this on the other art topic, but the purpose of this is to improve. So, here it is again. đ
This is probably just a matter of practice, but my lines arenât very deliberate. Sometimes I go harder with the brush in places, and itâs just a matter of random impulse. In âeducatedâ art, it looks purposeful, but this doesnât feel as purposeful. Does anyone have tips for where to add more brushstrokes, darkness, etc?Anything else I should improve on?

March 3, 2025 at 2:11 pm #198948This is a great idea! I often am in need of a little troubleshooting, but am not sure how to proceed.

I have no experience in digital art, so I’m no help there. Love the proportion guide though. I need to do more of those…
I guess for design stuff, try to view the image as a shape of shadows. You do very well creating the impression of movement and shape even with a few lines. Your impulse may have more instinct in it than is obvious. Where you put a line can indicate shape by outlining and showing where contours create shadow. The harder or darker a line, the more shadow I expect it to be in. If it is light and slightly broken, I expect it to be in direct light or even a glare. It looks like you are using this visual clue by using more dark strokes where you also put shadow, and less where you have highlights. It’s when you’ve done that that the variation looks right to me.

XD I was pretty satisfied too. While drawing, that is.

Ooohh, how did I not think of this?? That is a very good point, thank you. I suppose it might help if I fill in the light shading and go over the lines after, because I won’t have to think as much about where to put the thickness. *Taps nose and points at you*

March 5, 2025 at 11:19 am #199080Your figures look good. I usually do a harder outline around my characters to help distinguish them from the background. This was a tip I recall my Dad giving me a long while ago. The closer the object is to the front, the darker the outline should be. I also make sure my lines connect. If you’re asking about shading as well, I like to add a touch of shade to the other side of the object as well, so that the light is caught between two areas of darkness. Although I do know that some objects, especially ones with hair, can also catch a bright patch of light right at the edge. But these things may just be my style as well.

March 5, 2025 at 11:22 am #199081I’m going to ask for some critique on this drawing regarding the proportions. I often draw characters separately, so am wondering how they fit together. I fear I may have made the horse too small. Also, what do you think of the character’s arm length?

March 5, 2025 at 1:04 pm #199092@linus-smallprint I don’t think the horse is too small; horses vary greatly in size. If you really think it looks wrong, you can increase the size.
Alan’s arms look fine, but there is something a little off about Martha’s. I’m not sure exactly what though. I think the one holding the apple is longer than the one holding the broom by her side. Apart from that, your characters fit together nicely.
Your signature is awesome by the way.

March 5, 2025 at 1:18 pm #199098Okay. You kind of confirmed my suspicions (room for improvement đ), but I’m glad Alan’s arms look fine to you. Thank you!

March 5, 2025 at 1:44 pm #199105Thanks for the extra ideas. I bet I can make a list of things to focus on with line thickness.
Nice drawing!! I always like how dedicated you are with the textures, such as the wood and brick floor. that takes more patience than I have at this time.
I agree with Keilah on both those points. Another thing – Alan’s left arm might need perspective adjustment? It took a moment to realize he’s petting the horse.
Otherwise you’ve delivered amazingly with the shading, as always. :â -â )

March 5, 2025 at 1:44 pm #199106@linus-smallprint Measuring how long one arm is and using that as a baseline for the other one helps me. Also, the arms tend to end toward the bottom of the hip, with the hands extending a little farther than that.

Thank you! Maybe I should have tucked Alan’s elbow under the gate.
