And don’t y’all worry, he’s saved by the time he dies! But um…I’m gonna give y’all a warning: POSSIBLE CRYING AHEAD! *sobs* OH, WHO AM I KIDDING!? ALMOST GUARANTEED CRYING AHEAD!!!! *sobs forever* TISSUE FORT, HERE I COME!!!
Riker’s body trembled. Blood trailed from the injuries covering his body. He remained on his knees and hands on the floor.
He closed his eyes, tight.
No…no…please…not…not Jezyk.
Slick shined jackboots clicked against the floor, surrounding, hounding, mocking. Hans clicked his tongue. “Thought you could get away with lying, did you? Did you seriously think you would be able to keep everything from us? Luckily for us, Jezyk broke after he saw us try to get information out of you with a specific tactic.” Hans chuckled. “I suppose Jezyk just couldn’t stand the water.”
Riker slowly opened his eyes. He couldn’t get his breath to even out.
He remembered.
Seeing Jezyk standing off to the side, eyes wide, tears coursing down his cheeks.
Riker remembered feeling and sucking in the water.
After that, all he remembered was darkness.
Hans chuckled, low. “Well, at least he had the courage to say something.”
Something hard hit the floor with a thud.
A medal.
Originally silver.
Now red.
Jezyk’s.
Riker’s head swam. His head began to throb. “No…please…no…”
“Disobedience doesn’t come without a price.” Hans bent down. Gripped Riker’s jaw, forcing their eyes to meet.
“Jezyk was a child and you…you…”
“He’s only one among the many.” Hans shrugged. “All a part of restoring the glory of the Third Reich.”
“By making sure we have no heirs left after us?”
Hans grinned. “We only get rid of the ones that are undesired for the Reich. Jezyk was a traitor. We can’t have more of those now, can we?”
“Jezyk did what he knew was right. You shouldn’t kill a child under any circumstance.”
“If they hinder the Third Reich, I have every right to rid the Fatherland of them.”
So…twisted.
Riker tried to pull away, but Hans had a tight grip. “That doesn’t make it right. When has murder ever been okay?”
Hans laughed. Smiled. “Oh, you foolish child. Don’t you realize how much the world has changed? Don’t you realize that the rules are…different now? The world has moved on and left foolish children like you behind.”
Riker finally pulled away from his grip. Hit Hans’ hand away when he tried to grab him again. “Don’t call me a child.”
Hans smiled, unfazed. “You can certainly act like one. The Fatherland is not the same one you once knew. It’s better now. Stronger. And once the Third Reich gets back its glory, we will improve the rest of the world as well.”
“By murdering the people that don’t agree with your view?”
Hans sighed. “Oh Riker…you poor, foolish, stupid child. How is what I want to do any different that what you did?”
“…What?”
“Jezyk died because you pulled him into your mission. ‘Save Jews to make a better world’, correct? Though your beliefs are skewed, I will say I do admire you for being able to build an army so quickly.”
“That’s not what I…”
“And now Jezyk is dead. All because…of you.”
Riker’s body trembled.
No…he didn’t…he didn’t mean to.
“You pulled him into saving Jews. Something Fin started…but you took it even further. You did well for a time. But taking it so far…why? Why did you risk everything for people you didn’t even know?” Hans’ fingers wrapped in Riker’s hair. Pulled Riker’s hair, to make their eyes meet once again. “Why did you take it so far?”
“It…it was the right thing to do.” Riker whispered, stumbling over his words.
Jezyk was dead too. And all because of…because of…
Hans smiled. Let go of Riker’s hair, instead grabbing his jaw. “Why did you risk everything for people you didn’t know, I’ve asked myself, over and over again. I believe I have finally come to a conclusion.”
Riker stared Hans down. “You don’t even know what’s up and down, so how would you know?”
Hans smiled.
Unreactive.
“You were trying to buy forgiveness.”
Riker almost opened his mouth, to protest, to say no, he was doing it because it was right. And he was. But…Fin’s words came back. “…Are you trying to earn atonement?”
No…he wasn’t. He was trying to do what was right…“But that doesn’t mean you weren’t doing both…”
Hans let go of Riker’s jaw.
Riker’s gaze fell.
He stared at the floor as it spun.
No…he…he couldn’t earn atonement.
“You thought you could somehow earn forgiveness? You thought you could buy your way into being accepted? You believe in all the religious stupidity, so…you thought you could bribe your way into Heaven?” Hans boot’s encircled him, each step sending a throb through Riker’s head.
“No…I didn’t…I didn’t…”
“You seriously thought you, a traitor, a low life, a murderer, a mistake, could ever be forgiven? You thought by being a so-called “good man” you could bribe your God into stopping the suffering you’re destined for?”“That’s not what…not what I…m…meant. I didn’t…I didn’t…believe that.”
Hans chuckled. “Oh, but on the contrary, I know you did. And it was a foolish…stupid…childlike idea. You are a foolish child for ever thinking you could even ever be forgiven. And you pulled others in, trying to buy your way to Heaven. Jezyk trusted you, Riker…” Hans got down onto one knee in front of Riker. Riker looked up, met his eyes. “…and you killed him.”
Hans stood.
“I…I…I didn’t…I didn’t mean it…”
Hans brushed the dust off his uniform. “It’s too late for that now. Jezyk can’t hear you. You betrayed him…killed him.”
“I…I’m sorry.”
Hans glanced back from where he stood beside the door. Shook his head again. “It’s too late for sorry now.”
The door opened and slammed closed.
Riker’s arms gave up.
He slid, hit the floor.
Curled into a ball.
“I…I didn’t…I’m so sorry Jezyk…Aadelheide…Fin…Mama…” Riker wrapped his arms around himself, curling into an even tighter ball.
The guilt tore at his heart. The faces of all the people he’d killed floated before his eyes.
His body gave in to racking sobs. The lights turned off.
And Riker was plunged into darkness.
