An amazing story idea pops into your head: What do you do?

For me, if it’s an idea that would work for a short story, I try to write down the summary of the whole story from beginning to end because I find with short story ideas, I usually think of the ending pretty soon after I think of the beginning.

I try to write it down as quickly as possible so I don’t forget it, plus when the idea is fresh, it’s easier for me to think up the rest of the story.

If it’s a novel idea, I quickly write down the idea so I don’t forget it, (’cause most of the time I do), then I just let the idea just brew in my head. I start thinking of the characters, world, and the themes that could possibly be explored in this story. Preferably, I’d be coming up with story ideas while sipping a cup of coffee in a quite room, but I’m chill with doing it while washing dishes.

So what’s the first thing you do when a story idea pops into your head?

@kathleenramm Cry. Or scream. Kidding, kidding. I’ll either scribble down some incoherent things for my future self to decipher, or I’ll run it around in my brain for a few days or weeks until I feel like I have a coherent idea for me to start developing. And then at some point I start it, leave it for six months, then come back and see where it takes me.

Well, I guess that depends. If it’s just a vague idea that I’m not too excited about, I’ll write down a quick one-sentence blurb in my doc titled “Story Ideas.” (Go figure. XD) Buuuuut, if it’s an idea that immediate captures my attention, I’ll think up as many details as I can (usually long character names with serious significance) and put together an outline.

Eh, basically what @devastate-lasting said. (Oh, while I’m taggin’ you, girl, love that profile pic!)

@gracie-j Ahhh tysm! It’s from a song called “Campanella” by Kenshi Yonezu! I highly recommend it (and the book which it was based on).

                  @kathleenramm

Well, first it takes up all my daydreaming hours and my siblings (mainly my two oldest younger) get to listen to me rant on and off for a few weeks/months about various scenes that pop into my head. (They’re great listeners, and thankfully they seem to enjoy hearing my ideas. 😛 ) The scenes then get tucked away into the appropriate folder in the file cabinet in my brain until the time when they get put down on (digital) paper!

I have a bunch of stories up in that file cabinet… 🙂

I don’t usually write it down right away. I usually just let it percolate (my favourite word, mainly because its so bizarre) in my head for a while. And if I remember it, that means I’m obsessed with it and that’s when I get a physical notebook and start making notes and outlines for it! Mostly I just forget my ideas, which is fine since I already don’t have enough time to write all the books I have in my head.

@kathleenramm Ahh… this is a fun topic. I usually, if it’s a random idea but I’m not overly interested in it, will write it down (like @gracie-j said) as a one sentence thingy in my notebook. If it’s something GOOD that I like and wanna explore more, I’ll probably turn it into a short story because heaven knows I have way too many novels on the go *glances nervously at seven unwritten fantasy novels and one hiStoRy aNthOlOgy >:C*

Anyways, it’ll usually become a short story. If it’s REALLY REALLY good, and this has only happened once outside of my fantasy novels (the reason my series is so long is because most of the books are historical to provide insight into the world, really) I will begin plotting and spinning characters. In fact, ( @writerlexi1216 @lewilliams @devastate-lasting @gracie-j @anyone-else-who-i-talked-about-yeong-to) my characters usually start out as mere ideas, but then they get intense development since I daydream about them XD. I like to get the basic premise of the plot down first (major plot points, etc.) and then from there the characters and plot usually evolve in tandem. My character from my crime novel, Yeong, started out as an American 16 y/o criminal with dusty brownish-blonde hair (in the VERY first idea of him, and back then his name was Graylen) and now he’s a 19 y/o Korean arrogant jerk named Seo-jun Yeong. (But his eng name is Grayson since I love that name and it kinda suits him, ngl.)

O, character development, shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?

Anyways. Usually the good ideas become short stories, and the great ones novels. I keep telling myself I can’t write another novel considering I already have so many projects on the go. Also it’s hard for me to focus on one thing at a time when it comes to my projects. XD But sometimes a story idea will literally descend from nowhere! The other day I just had an idea about writing a short story that somehow included a girl in a red coat, because at that time I was wearing a red coat. (Also, @devastate-lasting after reading your stuff I’m inspired by tiny elements like that since you so often include things like that. Hehe.)

So that’s how I deal with story ideas! 😀

Generally, I just release it into my brain and say “Now stay in my head until I can get to writing yo-” *POOF* “… what was I talking about?”

Or I try to write a summary or just a couple sentences about it. And then end up writing as much as I can of it before I burn out and forget about it and go back to writing my WIPs. Unless it’s an idea for a fanfic.

I write those no matter what. xD

If you ask me about my book, I will talk for hours. Have a nice day!😊
