‘Sup guys. *gangster head jerk to signify greeting*
I’m guessing at there’s a few who’ll eventually see this post who liked A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snickett.
So, what’s there to see in them? Like, I read the first one, and besides having a few witty lines, it was overall depressing. And everyone who likes them is like, “Yeah, Karilyn! Duh, that’s the POINT!”
Sooo, to be completely fair, is there anything in there that will appeal to one who doesn’t particularly enjoy irony for its own sake? Redeeming characteristics at the end of the series? Or are they jut read to indulge in/induce some emo depression?
March 4, 2021 at 12:08 pm #94834@trulyyours_karilyn I read all of them some years back…I remember that after the last one there was a lot of loose ends tied up. Almost every book save for the last few basically follow the same plot: The kids are being taken care of by new adults, “Oh no, it’s Count Olaf in disguise!” Adults say, “That’s not Count Olaf!” and anyways bad things happen. Towards the second half of the series we get into more backstory about the parents and Olaf and such…I don’t really remember what happened, but I think most people kind of hate the ending? To me it’s not really a cliffhanger, and it’s a bit more realistic, considering everything they’ve been through so far…like I can see a bit of hope there. It’s a slimmer of hope, and everything else is burning up, but there’s still a bit of hope there. I think that the series was quite good in itself, much better than some other things I could or couldn’t name, but, yeah, most of it is pretty depressing. If nothing else besides the writing style appeals to you, I’d say do or don’t read them.

So it just that people keep reading to find out what happens after the cliff hanger?March 4, 2021 at 12:44 pm #94844@trulyyours_karilyn …Perhaps. I think that was why I read them all.

I’ve never read the series myself, but I plan on trying them out. I know my cousins liked them a lot… sorry I can’t be more help than that.
March 4, 2021 at 3:36 pm #94909I have the read the ENTIRE series!!! And yea they’re sad/ironic, so there’s that. But I don’t think u read them to induce depression, I mean, I didn’t. I wanted to know what happened to the kids. And while yes it ends kinda sad for some characters the kids are the main ones to read about, so really the ending isn’t unearned in my opinion. If u don’t like them then by all means don’t read them, but I enjoyed them for the time I read them. I probs won’t reread them because yea they can be a bit creepy or dark, but what’s also fun is trying to piece together Lemony’s past and all the things he mentions in the books.
And I will tell u the last sentence or word at the end of the series had me like “WHAT?!” Although it may not do that for others.

#ProtectSebMarch 4, 2021 at 4:13 pm #94913@trulyyours_karilyn I have the entire series plus add-on books, they’re literally one of my fave book series EVER. XD I’ve read the entire series at least 3 times now, I think.

i'll make the winter now my homeMarch 5, 2021 at 12:13 pm #94982@trulyyours_karilyn To be fair, I’ve only read the first book in the series and even that was quite a long time ago. I think I remember liking it, but I didn’t pick up the others (mostly because I only owned the first one). My brother got me to watch the Netflix series with him a while back, though. But I think the reason people like to read books like them are because they want to know what happens to the characters, find out more about the backstories that impact the plot (especially in the case of A Series of Unfortunate Events), and just because they enjoy the experience and the writing style. I know I’ve definitely read books or read further into a series in the past just to find out what happens next and what happens to the characters, even if I’m not super invested in it. Then, like I said, I only read the first book a long time ago, so I can’t say I’m really qualified to give an answer… just thought I’d share my thoughts.
